--STREET!
Sweeney Todd has got to be one of my favorite musicals ever. It's tied for first with RENT, Phantom, and West Side Story. I got to see a high-school production of it, and it was ******** AMAZING. I went home and bought the soundtrack, of course. I'm hoping I can get one of the taped performances for my birthday... in 3 months. ._.; Oh! And they are making a movie, which is set to come out January of next year. It's starring Johnny Depp and Tim Burton's wife, and Tim Burton himself is directing it. Honestly, I'm skeptical. I'm not sure if Johnny Depp can sing.. and I know that Tim Burton's wife was the voice of the Corpse Bride, but I don't know if she can really pull off Mrs. Lovett!
Spoon: Have you seen/heard Sweeney Todd? What do you think of the idea of a movie?

I love this musical heart
LOVETT: It's priest. Have a little priest. TODD: Is it really good? LOVETT: Sir, it's too good, at least! Then again, they don't commit sins of the flesh, So it's pretty fresh. TODD: Awful lot of fat. LOVETT: Only where it sat. TODD: Haven't you got poet, or something like that? LOVETT: No, y'see, the trouble with poet is 'Ow do you know it's deceased? Try the priest!
I've seen some of the original musical on Youtube and I love all the tidbits of symbolism they use, so I hope that they incorperate that.
Johnny Depp will be a perfect Sweeney Todd...if he can sing. He has that creepy essence that we've all seen (Secret Window...) but I hope he has the voice to match but I trust Depp. Even if he's in movies that I disapprove of (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory o.< ) his acting skills having always been superb in every film and he prepares for every role.
Depp's the only one I trust though heart Who they're going to get to play Mrs. Lovett is another rather crucial pick.

Helena Bonham Carter is going to play Ms. Lovett.
I love Johnny's acting, I just hope for 2 things: either a) he's so good they won't have to dub his singing or b) he's not so awful that we wish they'd dubbed him. ._.;;
(Aw, I loved Charlie and the Chocolate Factory!)
Another thing: If you look it up on IMDB, they didn't have a pick for Tobias(Toby) until when I checked just now. Worried the spit out of me!! My god, if they had cut out an entire character, I would have boycotted Tim Burton until he retired. >< I guess I'm just a little leary of current movie musicals right now because of what I've heard of Hairspray. (I could handle Amanda Bynes and Zac Efron, but they cut out one of my favorite numbers!!) I just hope it's not true...

I don't think Burton would be chopping out characters. He loves the creepy stuff so anything that lends to it would be his delight.
I think it'd be rather funny to see it in that famous stop-motion animation style of his, though.

Here's a rather odd idea, what if Burton made a Phantom film out of the stop-motion thingy? That would be rather odd...then all the character's feet would be as skinny as their legs..

Yeah Johnny Depp can sing. before he was discovered by Nicholas Cage he was in a rock group and actually did well. Besides I have feeling that he'll do very well with the character.

I dunno if Johnny Depp can sing but he's just the perfect creepy actor. And Anthony Stewart Head is also gonna be in it and he has a gorgeous voice! Sorry that's my BTVS fandom showing through, but he's amazing.

I just found the OBC at Barnes & Noble, made me very very happy. But the more I listen to the original, the less I want to see the new movie. ><

I. heart Love. heart Sweeney. heart Todd. ...I have two cast recordings (2 disc Revival and 2 Disc OBC-is VERY happy about the OBC-)! I think George Hearn is a bit better than Len Cariou, though. Michael Cerveris was my first Sweeney, though. I guess all actors have something to offer to the part. I saw Brian Stokes Mitchell played Sweeney once on YouTube and and and and...sorry. I just love Sweeney Todd so much! It is up on my favorite musicals list (which Sondheim dominates anyway).
As for the movie, I'm interested to see what Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Tim Burton, and Co. can do. I'm a little skeptical, but I still have some hopes for the movie...even if they are going to cut a bunch of songs (I hope none of you have strong feelings for "Green Finch and Linnet Bird" or... eek The Johanna Quartet eek -I heard that was at risk of being cut, but I hope it's just a rumor...). stare

DDDDx That's one of my favorite numbers! Especially when done by Michael Cerveris. The only number that I really wouldn't miss would be 'Wait'. It's my least favorite aside from the Judge's 'Johanna', which is REALLY REALLY CREEPY.

Pg 13 atleast. It's a horror musical with a main character who ends up murdering most of the cast.
