I read up on the history of abortion.... and of homosexuality beliefs.

You know Oman, from the bible? Well, he spilt his 'seed' on the ground, and did not let it off inside the woman, to keep her from getting pregnant. According to the bible, this was 'evil'

It was really because back then, sex was only for making children, not for pleasure, so it was considered 'evil' to have any form of birth control. Seman was believed to contain 'tiny men and women' and the good sperm, when inside a woman, was like a seed, and it grew like a plant grows in a field, into a little 'man', and the deformed sperm grew into a 'little woman'. This religious practice continued, and some catholics seem to believe birth control is 'sin'. And the reason the bible says 'if a man lays with another man, they have sinned in the eyes of god' but it dosent say 'if a woman lays with a woman, then they have sinned in the eyes of god' is because if you ejaculated, outside of a woman, or masturbated, and your sperm did not fertilize an egg, it was like 'murdering the tiny men, because they must have a woman to live' so it was considered a sin to masturbate in some church sects. So, if a woman lay with a woman, they did not have sperm, but, if a man lay with a man, there was no one to get pregnant, because a man cannot get a man pregnant, so they considered it 'killing little men, and wasting sperm' but, they left out the woman laying with women because they have no sperm to waste.

I may be wrong... but I was under the impression what he did was wrong because God specifically told him to go knock up his brother's wife after his brother died and he didn't want to.

Of course that may be a different "oh noes every sperm is sacred" story I'm thinking of.

The oman story is popular for fundies who wish to have a reference for their anti-masturbation beliefs.

Actually, I think you're right -- and it's Onan. Oman is a common mis-translation or typographical error. Onan knew that he would not profit from the offspring, but his brother's family would. This is greed, not a condemnation of contraception.

(Wow, being pro-choice has its perks --- I even have the power to see through fundie bullshit!)

All I can think of is how TRAUMATIZED the woman would be. She's being raped by her husband's brothers and on TOP OF THAT, GOD STRIKES THEM DOWN DEAD ON TOP OF HER! Geez. Talk about shitty.

Hmmmm religius people, what did you say again about the Bible being so "friendly" and "wonderful" for children to read?

Read the rest of that story. The woman (Tamar) then gets sent back to her father's home, but without the ability to remarry. She then sets up as a prostitute to catch her father in law, who avails himself of her services, and gives her some identifying items as pledge that he would return to pay her. Well, Tamar gets pregnant from this occasion, and is decried as a slut, and is to be executed. She shows her father in law the items, and he acknowledges her case as right, and brings her back into his household.

BTW, I believe in the Bible, but it's a REALLY racy document. And how negative it is towards women depends on the specific story, because there's a real range... of course, in the Old Testament, there's a huge emphasis on women being mothers (and men being fathers) because in Judaism, having children (for both genders) is a high spiritual goal.

I think it is a very sexist book, I mean, 'god' TELLS Onan to MARRY his brothers wife, but he wont, and he gets punished, THEN, later on in the bible, it says to marry your brothers wife is a sin. And, if a girl isnt a virgin when she marries, it suggests stoning! I believe men and women are equal, so where is the part about a man being stoned if he isnt a virgin when they marry?

Oh, my. The bible seems more of a Horror Story instead of a Bed-Time Story.

And sexist... Stupid deformed sperm!

Most lullabies and nursery rhymes are horror genre. It's to scare little kiddies into doing what mommy and daddy say.

Actually, if caught in adultury, BOTH parties are stoned.

And you're right about not marrying your brother's wife, EXCEPT in one circumstance, "for the good of the tribe", if your brother doesn't have any sons, so the oldest son of you and your brother's wife would be your brother's heir. This was Onan's marriage, and why he wouldn't have sex with his brother's wife, because it would erode his own inheritance, and that of any children he already had.

Kinda sucks to have the destiny of your crotch completely against your will, huh? Free will... that really isn't free afterall. wink

God seems ....really really really really is interested in crotches lately, from what I'm reading.

By the way, is it just coincidental that they NEVER have these types of stories in children's coloring books or in the pews on sunday morning church services? No no, please don't answer me here. I'll figure out the reason WHY later rolleyes

Or the rape of Dinah? Or perhaps the story of Samson (the story of the "evil woman" leading the man astray)?
