There are a lot of color schemers. This is just one: http://kuler.adobe.com/I myself like a combo of blues, oranges and purples. maybe throw in a red in there too.

I think colour contrasts are especially good, wild and wacky. I just found a pretty good site where you can create a basic patterned background for your own use: http://bgmaker.ventdaval.com/
