What sorts of things do you listen to (other than Classical music)? What are some of your favorite genres? What genres do you dislike? What bands are you into?

Personally, I'm mostly into rock, folk, and combinations of the two. I listen to a lot of Russian music. It all started to train my ears to the sounds of the language, but then I just fell in love. Now I help moderate a Russian music fansite for English speaks! My conversion to all things Russian is complete wink

At the moment, I am in love with the band Devyatiy Rayon. I also like Melnitsa, DDT, Alisa, Olga Arefieva, 7B, Krematorij, and many more. In English, I like Jethro Tull, Alan Parson's Project, Fleetwood Mac, Supertramp, Janis Joplin, Mark Knopfler, Talking Heads, Pink Floyd, and odds and ends of lots of other bands.

I dislike most rap and thrash/death metal, but I don't mind most other things.

I listen to death metal, heavy metal, electronica, techno, trance, 80s pop, disco, 80s rock, and heavy rock. Some light rock, as well.

I also listen to J-Pop, J-Rap, K-Pop, and K-Rock, but not that often anymore.

Ummm... I don't really understand genres, actually. I never did. Rock seems to include everything I like, but also a lot of stuff I can't stand. Country includes a whole hell of a lot that I hate, but also some of the stuff that I like because it's rock, but also a lot that I don't like that's still rock. I don't like rap, but there's a lot of techno/electronica/whateveryoucallit that's so borderline that I think the only difference is that more of the lyrics (if any) aren't completely unintelligible and the bass isn't totally overwhelming. I also listen to 80s-either-pop-or-rock when the mood strikes me enough that I can actually listen to it.

Pink Floyd [Rock/Progressive Rock]
The Alan Parsons Project [Rock/Progressive Rock]
And One [Techno/Electronica/Dance]
Eisbrecher [Techno/Electronica/Dance]
Kajiura Yuki [...um? She did the bg music from .hack//SIGN]
Coldplay [...? some kind of Rock]
OOMPH! [Rock/something]
a-Ha [Pop?]
That old rock and roll that's awesome... [soft rock?]
About a third of what they play in Hot Topic [puke rock?]
Eric Clapton God ["Blues", I'm told, but I thought He was Rock]

The thing is, I can't even keep up with what I like... T.T The one thing I LIKE about going home is the music; I miss it so much... the "Light Rock" they play on the radio. I don't even know the artists! So sad; I'd track it down so I could listen to it all the time, otherwise. Probably a good thing, though, or I'd start hating it and wouldn't be able to relax at home at all.

[Spring Break. I need to sign off and get going; nice long ride x.x ahead of me...]

I was raised on beach music and disco.

Eccentric - I like Voltaire as well smile I love all his Star Trek songs, lol.

As for Eric Clapton, I believe he played a lot on the bridge between blues and rock (since most of rock came from blues). So his guitar is technically a "blues guitar" (I don't know, something about chords I think...) but he's closer to what we would today call rock. Most of the rock bands from the '60s are like that (Cream, Janis, Jethro Tull, all of those were "blues" - white people trying to play blues their own way).

Cream includes Eric Clapton, actually. domokun

Oh, and I got readdicted to Tears for Fears today, largely due to their awesomeness as driving music.

My 15 GB of music and case full of (legit) CDs are saying that I have a wide range of musical tastes generally preferring the more unusual stuff.

I hate modern genres, but if I had to, I would say that the following genres include most of the stuff I regularly listen to: Grunge, different types of Rock, Metal, Nu Metal, House, Indie, Electronica (including Techno). I also like older country and Johnny Cash style country, as well as old hip-hop (not "rap") and certain strains of Disco.

I Do Not Like (Usually): Rap, Rhythm & Blues, "Emo" (old or new), whiny Country, wannabe-Rock Country, most Punk Rock and Hardcore (the fast screamy stuff), and almost all kinds of Pop. Please note that I do make exceptions whenever I find a song I actually like.

Now, for a list of bands I really like...

(hed) PE, 311, A Perfect Circle, ACDC, Aerosmith, Alice in Chains, At the Drive-In, Audioslave, Avenged Sevenfold, Barenaked Ladies, Beck, Blink 182, Bloc Party, Bloodhound gang, Blue October, Buckethead, Bush, Butthole Surfers, Cake, Coal Chamber, Coheed & Cambria, Collective Soul, Counting Crows, Daft Punk, The Darkness, Dave Matthews Band, David Bowie, The Decemberists, Depeche Mode, Devo, Disturbed, Donna Summer, Dope, Drowning Pool, Eiffel 65, Electric Six, (older) Eminem, Everclear, Faith No More, Fatboy Slim, Fear Factory, The Fiery Furnaces, Foo Fighters, George Michael, Gnarles Barkley, GooGoo Dolls, Gorillaz, Green Day, The Happy Planets, Hot Hot Heat, Incubus, Interpol, Jason Mraz, Johnny Cash, Kasabian, Kick the Can Crew, The Killers, King Missile, KoRn, Live, Mad Capsule Markets, Maroon 5, The Mars Volta, Matisyahu, (some) Metallica, Mindless Self Indulgence, Modest Mouse, Muse, Nine Inch Nails, Nirvana, The Offspring, Orgy, Outkast, Panic! At the Disco, Paranoid Social Club, Peaches, Pearl Jam, Peter Gabriel, The Pillows, Pink Floyd, Placebo, The Postal Service, Primus, Queen, Queens of the Stone Age, Radiohead, Rage Against the Machine, Rammstein, Reggie & the Full Effect, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rob Zombie, Sepultura, She Wants Revenge, Shinedown, Shiny Toy Guns, Slipknot, Stone Temple Pilots, The Streets, The Strokes, Sublime, Sugar Ray, System of a Down, Temple of the Dog, Tenacious D, They Might Be Giants, Third Eye Blind, Thomas Dolby, The Toadies, Tool, The Transplants, Weezer, Weird 'Al' Yankovich, The White Stripes, X-Japan

I just got the latest Modest Mouse CD. It's sweeet. I have the two before it as well~ heart

I hatehatehateHATE genres, therefore I listen to whatever I feel like. The only real exceptions are mid-90s to early 2000's pop (the new bands coming into pop are much better), rap, and modern country (old stuff, like Johnny Cash, is perfectly fine).

However, for all the rest, I'll listen to pretty much anything and everything from classical music to deathmetal. xp I've got a whole crapload of artists on my iPod, which I'll put down. 3nodding

30 Seconds to Mars, A Perfect Circle, The Academy Is..., AFI, Apocalyptica, Apoptygma Berzerk, Avenged Sevenfold, Beborn Beton, Bella Morte, Bif Naked, The Birthday massacre, Blind Guardian, Boys Like Girls, Breaking Benjamin, Cradle of Filth, The Crüxshadows, Depeche Mode, De/Vision, Diary of Dreams, Dimmu Borgir, Dir En Grey, Doll Factory, E.S. Posthumus, Echo Image, Era, Evanescence, Fall Out Boy, Flesh Field, From First to Last, Gothminister, Hellogoodbye, Hinder, Kill Hannah, Lacuna Coil, Linkin Park, London After Midnight, Marilyn Manson, Matchbook Romance, Melotron, Metallica, My Chemical Romance, Neurotic Fish, Nightwish, Orgy, Panic! At The Disco, Papa Roach, Ra, Rammstein, Razed in Black, The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Seraphim Shock, Stutterfly, Sugarcult, Switchblade Symphony, Taking Back Sunday, Three Days Grace, Unter Null, The Used, VNV Nation, Within Temptation, Wolfsheim, Wumpscut, and Zeromancer.

*takes a deep breath* That's not even fully counting all of the J-pop and J-rock I used to listen to.

You mean there's people who DON'T? Knowing how single-minded some people can be when it comes to music, I can understand never hearing about them... but not liking either band if you have heard of them?

/semi-sarcasm... They're awesome bands, how can you not like them?

My father started listening to both and likes them a lot. He made me some copies of their CDs to try out. I've kept a couple songs here and there, but threw out the rest.

Why? I don't know. Just didn't appeal to me. Sorry wink

*bows down to 2/3 of Xeigrich's music collection*

Forgedawn's already outed me as a Rammstein fanboy, so you know one of my genres. Here's the 'full' list (bear in mind that I ignore what I don't like and make exceptions all over the place):

Metal/Industrial/Rock (especially when coupled with fun sounds like a keyboard)
Dance Party FunTimes music (uh, electronica? Techno? Your genres don't understand me emo )
Classic Rock (mostly when I'm lurking with my brother)
sometimes Classical, Jazz, other strange things - only when I'm in that strange mood.

I usually loop simple-base-sounded softer songs with no specific start/finish when working, like Sound of Believer (And One).
