So yeah. On April Fools, my little brother who I always refer to as Taco, which I'm sure most of you are aware of by now, wanted to get on Gaia to get the "Platinum Halo" when I showed it to him, and especially telling him that it seemed only you can get one per account. However, Gaia seemed to have disabled his account due to the new law, COPPA. ... or maybe it's not new, but they've only started reinforcing this law recently.
http://www.ftc.gov/ogc/coppa1.htm
This new law forbids websites to hold any information about kids under the age of 13, and also to protect them from possible harm, whatever it may be. =/
I say it's all because of My Space's fault. There's been too many cases where kids went missing, kidnapped, raped and/or murdered, because their MySpace account had all the information about them from where they live, where they go to, what they look like, etc.
I've always found MySpace to be dumb. =/ I didn't see the point of it because I'm not a nosy b*****d like some people I know. Not anyone from the guild, but people I know IRL. It took a while for people to get me to get a FaceBook account since it was pretty much a similar thing, except back then, it was a college student only thing. Which sorta made it cooler. But alas, I'm not in college right now, and I barely go to that site anymore. ._.;
But yeah. Because of MySpace not having some sort of way to restrict access to certain information about themselves, and having everything be pretty much visible to everyone, or no one sees via the private option, which is friggin dumb as hell, the court finds that MySpace is faulty as hell and is the source of many stalking and worse problems that occur to these people. So they're reinforcing COPPA by blocking websites from accepting users under the age of 13 in most cases.
... What do you think of MySpace ******** up all these websites, including Gaia? It may not affect any of us, and it may get rid of some immature n00blets (provided under the age of 13), but still. =/ In the end, Taco couldn't claim this year's April Fools joke because of the sudden reinforcement of COPPA. Looks like he's gonna miss Easter too.

I hold no sympathy for those who post their lives on the internet. Especially the emo-bloggers... Which is like 90% of MySpace people (from what I can tell).
I do however, hold sympathy for Taco.
That law is a "good thing" I admit, and would help reduce (supposedly) the cases for the aforemention crimes in your post, but the fact that it had to come into being shows how low Humanity has sunken.
So says the misenthrope.

Yeah, it's been around for years... just that the law didn't enforce it that strictly a while ago. I saw on my Wii's News Channel how the courts are putting lawsuits on MySpace because of their lack of security for its users.

The same thing happened to my little brother. I should have warned him about the age thing, because his account was worth well over 2 mil and there was the fact that he had some of MY items within his account. x_x; I never saw the point in myspace, either. I've never had a myspace account, and I probably never will. Then again, I'm not a moron and don't post a crap load of personal info about me all over the net. >_>

I think MySpace is a great thing. It brings all the idiots into one place so you know to avoid them. Any smart individual would know how much that site is a waste of time.

Anorhc I think MySpace is a great thing. It brings all the idiots into one place so you know to avoid them. Any smart individual would know how much that site is a waste of time. As we can see though, there are obviously those who DON'T avoid them, and therein lies the problem and reason for this most rediculous of laws. I think this law is on par with the law that states you can't ride giraffes over state borders on the rediculous metre.
