It had been several hours since the rising of the sun, and the forest quivers with small gasps of waking life: ants follow one another on a quest for leaves and various other food items, squirrels uncurl from their slumber, and, of course, the most popular:

The twittering of birds in hot pursue of each other.

Brannon had tried to ignore the peeps and squawks around him, but to no avail. Tossing and turning, he gives up when a cardinal makes his singing debut just a couple of feet away from the tired stallion.

"Ugh..." Sighing, the blue roan pinto lifts his heavy self from the ground and heads towards the river for what he hopes will be a rejuvinating drink of water, or at the very least, some peace and quiet away from those that are 'twitterpated'.

Akila was having the time of her life.

Daddy let her go where she wanted, as long as it was in 'safe' lands. Even if his wolf followed her everywhere, it was still sweet freedom to the young filly. Freedom to run as fast as she could, to jump the highest fallen logs and widest creeks that she could, and to try to catch birds and butterflies before they flew away.

Whenever she got tired, she napped. If she wanted to go home, Mai would guide her.

Ducking his head for a final low hanging branch, Brannon finds himself relax as he steps into the un-filtered daylight by the river. Already the chirps aren't heard as loudly, and the sound of running water nearby was calming to his shot nerves. Smiling, he ventures further out of the forest, thoroughly enjoying the sun's rays warming his back.

That is the last time I try and sleep in the forest. I think I'd enjoy myself more if I slept out around here..., he thinks to himself before lowering his head for a drink.

However, at mid gulp he pauses. Swiveling his ears, he detects a rustling noise coming from across the river he was drinking from. Normally this wouldn't be something to be worried about, but as it turns out, it hasn't rained as much for spring just yet, and the river itself is low with a slow current. Anyone with enough motivation can easily make it across, and swiftly, as well.

Keeping his head low, his eyes gaze upwards and spots the wolf, but no sign of the excited filly. Feeling his body tense again, he keeps an eye on his foe, unsure as to why its attention is diverted elsewhere.

Akila's eyes widened with delight as the river came into view. A swim! Nevermind that she'd never gone swimming before, but it had to be fun, right? Besides...there was another Soquili on the other side! He had a braided mane and tail like momma, even if he was colored different.

So she charged into the river, deftly swerving around a worried Mai who tried to dart into her path. The golden tabby wolf scrambled out of the way, turning to watch Akila flail in the current. Ever a shy and quiet creature, Mai didn't have an idea how to get help.

Akila didn't exactly need help, but she stoutly believed she did. Shrieking and flailing, she was convinced that she was about to drown. Obviously she hadn't realized she could touch bottom yet.

The entire episode flew by Brannon rather quickly, as though he himself were frozen and were watching life around him go by in fastforward. Wasn't it just a second ago his single worry a wolf? A blue blur zipped its way to the river and now appears to be...

Well. That's not good.

Forgetting about the wolf, the stallion jumps into the water and manuevers himself next to the frantic filly - the water only rises to his chest, so the water should neatly rest below her neck once she's settled down. "Whoa, whoa..calm down there, little fella....it's alright..." He tries his best to use a soothing voice to catch her attention, and to hopefully coax her into ceasing her furious flailing. "Just stand still and tall, you're safe."

Akila wasn't even quite aware she was being spoken to until the word 'fella' caught her attention. Inadvertantly following Brannon's advice, she stilled, glaring up at him. "I'm a girl," she said quite clearly, but her tail only twitched a little. After all, she wasn't about to drown anymore was she?

Curiosity was about to take over anyways, so irritation just had to fall by the wayside. "Who are you?"

After the splashing subsided and he finds himself standing next to a calm, if not a bit annoyed filly, he whickers in relief and smiles. "Of course. Hence the fella, not fellow. More femenine connotation, but I can see where it can be misleading..."

He looks around the area to make sure it's safe; turns out the wolf is timid and perhaps even friends with the foal, so she's no longer a threat. Aside from her, they seem to be alone on the river for the time being.

"My name's Brannon, and you?" Stepping forward, he slowly makes his way to a bank, hoping she will take the hint and follow him to it.

"Oh...okay!" Akila splashed towards shore with energy barely diminished by her panicky flailing. Now that she wasn't convinced drowning was imminent, she rather enjoyed being in the water. It was nice of the river to give her something to stand on though. She didn't think she'd like being without the gravel beneath her hooves. "I'm Akila! The wolf's Mai, and she's daddy's...she's shy though. I can go lots of places as long as she's with me, but when I'm bigger daddy says I can go places by myself! Isn't that neat?" She smiled brightly, tail flicking happily as she scampered up the riverbank.

"That is great," A grin spreads along his muzzle, the tiredness clearly gone at this point. Getting closer to the bank, the water starts to shallow around the rocks and sand and both soquili will feel it easier to manuever through the water. Feeling that this was a good depth in which she'd be safe in incase some freak storm came by out of nowhere, Brannon steps onto the bank and folds himself down to watch Akila, giving her the option to stay around the bank and splash around to her delight, or leave his company in pursuit of other adventures.

"He must trust you enough to let you wander around by yourself, even if an escort is needed."

"Isn't it, though?" Akila lifted her head from snorting at her fractured reflection glittering upon the water, tail swishing happily. "Yeah, he tells me he got to wander around a lot too, and he didn't get into much trouble so he doesn't think I would. Mai comes with me so momma won't worry though, since when daddy was growing up there weren't any skinwalkers, and not as many kalona. I met a couple half-kalona, but momma didn't like me talking to them. Said they lie, which is bad."

Brannon flicked an ear, a little perturbed by her mother's ignorance. While certainly, many kalona are reputable for being the bad-tempered cyclones that they're viewed as now, but it couldn't be all of them, especially the half bloods and foals. After all, there are plenty soquili with anger problems, why shouldn't there be kalona with a soft heart?

As far as skinwalkers go, he couldn't respond, as he hasn't run across one so far in his travels. How strange.

Focusing his attention back on the filly, he whickered. "Oh, I'm sure all of them aren't as bad as your mother says. Though it's always good to keep your guard up, I suppose."

"So," He adds, changing the subject so that he isn't later hunted down by an angry mare who feels that he is misinforming her babe, "where are you off to on this glorious day of adventure?"

"Skinwalkers are bad though," Akila insisted. "Daddy says they're cursed, so even if they don't want to do bad stuff sometimes, they can't help it." She tossed her head. "I hope I never run into one, but I guess kalona could be okay. Don't think I should trust them though...I heard they eat other Soquili." Ears pricked at the change of topic, she added, "Anywhere really. I go wherever looks interesting!"
