I live here in Brazil, a country that actually all like funk. I don't, as I prefer (very much more) the good and old classical music.

Does anyone here like classical music? In your contry, it's common to like classical music?

I like classical music as long as it isn't Bach. mrgreen

Mozart, Borodin and Tchaikovsky are good.

But I like all sorts of music...

I like a lot of it, but I'm afraid I don't know any names. I'd like to get better acquainted with musical history and with some of the composers, but it's hard to know where to start.

I'm not sure if it counts, but I really like Vanessa Mae, lol.

I love classical music, but I'm not familiar with many composers or names.

I know I like some Tchaikovsky and Handel, Chopin, Bach, Beethoven, Mozart (the usual suspects, hehe).

My calculus teacher plays classical radio in his office. It's really handy for working, because he's got the volume just low enough to be behind, but high enough that you're not sitting there trying to hear it. So it blocks out the other noises and lets me work. So, I hang out in there a lot of Wednesday afternoons. At least, I intend to and often don't. Which sucks. I plan to actually do it tomorrow. Hooray! Doing my homework is probably a good thing.

I used to listen to classical music when I would study (hah, study!), but I found that even THAT would distract me. I'd sit there listening intently trying to identify patterns to see if I could tell who the composer was (never could). I've found that it's more effective for me if I listen to something loud, hard, fast and catchy to get me pumped and keep me in a good mood.... I can't concentrate unless I'm multitasking. eek

Well, I'm gonna go "acquire" some "compilations" of classical music now. If the RIAA asks... you've never heard of me. ninja

I can pretty much stand anything except most hip-hop, pop, anything with an 'op' sound in it, country, and punk and/or emo rock.

I particularly like folksongs and choir music (such as national anthems), even if such things don't technically fit into the 'classic' genre. But I guess the fact that the Red Army hasn't existed since the Soviet Union was around makes the Red Army Choir 'classical.'

I also like Mozart's stuff. And Pjotr Chajkovskij's (I like that spelling mrgreen ) work is incredible.

The best part of it is when there aren't any words to seep into whatever you are reading/writing.

It depends on the music, though. Some classical music is too... variable. It will be soft and soothing one second, and then very energetic the next. Quick changes in mood like that tend to draw me out of myself and make me pay attention. So when I'm writing essays, I like to just play Albinoni's adagio (there's a million of them, but it's the most famous one - I don't know how to identify it, though). It's so soothing and there's no distinctive begining or end so you can listen to it on repeat.

Hawk - I love Russian folk music smile There's the different kinds, though. There's the folk folk and then the bard stuff. I prefer the folk folk. Have you ever heard of the band Melnitsa? It's fairly newish, but it's absolutely beautiful. I like more modern rock bands that have very clear folk influences as well, like a lot of DDT and Garik Sukachev songs.

I try to spell it like that, but some people won't let me get away with that.

WTF? they ask.

So, I say Пётр Чайковский instead.

I like the music they use in Mass. As long as it's not some more modern-day church where they have guitars and bongo drums! gonk

I really like the medieval monastic chants, if that's what you mean. I like gospel as well, but not as much.

Ohh, I like monastic chants, as well. I've got this one recording of Tibetan Buddhist monks chanting the mantra "Om Mani Padme Hum." It's so soothing~

I also like Baroque (pre-Classical) and Renaissance (pre-Baroque). It was always a treat hearing the live Renaissance and folk music at the Renaissance festival.
