By drinking at lunchtime, Oz had greater chances of getting the alcohol from his system by the evening when he could go by the near-complete theatre and over see the finishing touches with a watchful eye. He'd taken his duties as guard and all-round labourer seriously, despite the odd alcohol-induced slip up. Today, however, was not a good day.

He hadn't drank all that much, three bottles resting beside his elbow as testiment to a fairly light drinking session. But combined with a night of feverish sleep, it served only to make him fall asleep on the counter of the beach bar. Oz lay slumped, snoring and with a small puddle of drool forming on the counter where his lips touched the surface.

The marsupial predator was deathly silent as he made his way into the Beach Bar area. Although he had been told numerous times that the Beach Bar was open and for everybody, he still felt almost criminal with the amount of times he arrived here to raid the place. Still, it was business as usual - sneak in, take the goods, run off to bury them somewhere important.

Today was different though. Nobody was usually here when he arrived. But today... there was a sleeping man on the counter.

"s**t..." He swore mentally as he crept by, not wanting to wake the animal man. He headed for the shelves where his favourite single-malt and blended whiskeys were kept, but he couldn't help turning his attention to the other occupant in the bar.

Hadn't he seen him before...? Seth gave him a more interested glance, examining his features for a few moments. He couldn't quite place a paw on it right now, but this one seemed DEFINITELY familiar. A lot of islanders looked unfamiliar and he usually kept distance of them. But this man seemed familiar and it bothered him. Still, he wasn't intending to wake him up and ask who he was, especially not in the middle of what he was doing. Besides... waking a sleeping man didn't seem like an overly intelligent idea.

Seth made his way behind the bar's serving counter, and crouched down, opening the cabinets, his paws greedily rubbing together with happiness upon seeing the huge stash of whiskeys down here. The labs restocked recently. He was getting good at timing it, also.
As quickly as he could, he picked up three bottles of the most expensive stuff, holding one under his arm. Then he rose to his feet and shut the cabinet door with a clawed digitigrade foot.

*THUMP*

The cabinet door had a tensile hinge, and so it banged shut when pushed. Seth instinctively sprung back at the noise. He should have expected it, but he was on high-alert, and jumpy as it was. In his movement back, the bottle under his arm slipped out of his hold, smashing loudly on the floor.

"Oh bugger!" Seth yelped as he skittered across the tiles at the noise, trying to avoid the shards of glass that had flown everywhere across the floor. The whiskey's powerful alcoholic odour immediately lay heavy in the air, and the thylacine-man backed away from the large mess, forgetting all about the sleeping occupant in the bar for now.

However, he had made enough noise to wake up the dead.

Maybe it was a good thing gorillas, like all high primates, were visual rather than aroma creatures. Had his sense of smell been as advanced as some of the other Islanders, he would have stirred into the life the moment Seth was close enough to be smelled.

But as it was, a gorilla, and indeed Oz himself, was useless with other senses. At leats at the moment anyways. He continued to emit sloppy snores, the spit rolling around and pooling in his mouth before seeping onto the counter.

The thump made Oz stir and begin his slow entry into the real world, reaching arms out to stretch and preparing his body for an almighty yawn. But this little ritual for awakening was sharply cut short and Oz was wide awake as the sound of glass hitting floor ringed all around the bar. His first thought was of one of his beer bottles being knocked to the ground accidentally, but before he could even look to the floor to confirm suspicions, he saw Seth in corner.

"What the...who are you?" he asked, not accusatory but certainly wary.

Seth's initial instinctive thought was to run. He snapped his attention up at Oz as he was spoken to, wide eyed, acting almost like a child who had been caught in the act. He quickly came to his senses however, and he shook his head, forcing an amused grin onto his face, showing off sharp carniverous teeth in the process.

"I meant to do that." He stated calmly, trying to justify the clumsy mistake he had just made. "Who am I? I could ask the same of you - you look really familiar, but I can't quite put my finger on it. I'm Seth, anyway."

He carefully stepped back across the floor, being careful not to stand on pieces of glass. His paws became damp in the whiskey and the smell eminating from the mess on the floor was almost overpowering. He had no intention of cleaning it up though. This wasn't the first time he had broken a bottle here, and it had been cleaned up within the day last time.

"So, what are you doing here?" He asked casually, wanting to take the focus off himself. Once he was free of the mess, he began to search through other cabinets behind the bar, making a mental note to be more careful this time.

Oz cocked a thick eye-ridge at the long-jawed man, quite visibly bemused with Seth and his actions. Like Seth, he couldn't shake a feeling of familiarity but that flash of sharp teeth was un-nerving and made Oz feel uneasy for a while. Armed with no claws or sharp teeth himself, he had been feeling incredibly vulnerable lately, and almost hoped his next change might bring some kind of defense or protection.

"I'm Oz...and what else do you do in a bar," he answered both questions in one gutteral sentence with little energy spent.

To get his point across, he gathered his three empties, amazingly still unsmashed in his stirrings, and then took them to the bin. He couldn't help notice that Seth went 'forraging' for more bottles of drink, stepping lightly over the shards of whiskey bottle.

"Having a party or something?"

"Oh this?" Seth grinned further, looking a little nervous. He didn't know this man's standing with the labs and didn't want to say something that would draw attention to himself.

"This is for... well, say this place isn't here one day, or it becomes off limits to us, or me. I'm just taking stuff away for a rainy day, you know?" He shrugged and plucked a bottle of fine 12-year old single malt whiskey from the storage cabinet, examining the label before placing it under his arm, taking two more of them. "I've got heaps of these hidden all over the place."

"I guess asking what you're doing was a bit of a stupid question," He continued. "But I personally wouldn't hang around here for too long. There're... people here who don't like me very much and would probably like nothing more than seeing me dead." He shuddered at the statement, Richard's image in his mind as he made the statement.

"At least they provided us with this stuff though, I dunno what I'd do without the booze."

Oz had to admit a kind of admiration for Seth's forethought. He'd been gulping down beer bottles everyday without so much as a nano-thought to the supplies and how often they were re-stocked. But as good as the idea may be, he wasn't about to start burying things on the Island. Seth could get away with it, he looked like a canine. A gorilla on the otherhand, would look mighty odd.

"Good point. Lord only knows when the evil bastards might try their own prohibition," he mumbled angrily as he soon joined Seth behind the bar, searching for alcohol.

Oz now took the chance to yawn and stretch as he had begun before, a low rumbling echoing around his thick chest and a very distinctive coarse grunt escaping his mouth. He reached a muscular arm to the beer fridge and pulled out another bottle that he shouldn't be having. This could be his last for today...or so he told himself.

He waited until he was back on the other side of the counter to ruminate on his next question.

"Why would anyone want to see you dead?" he asked considerably casually, supping his beer.

It didn't surprise him to hear of 'hunting desires' on the Island, considering the number of plant eaters to meat eaters, etc. But Seth didn't look like a plant eater.

"Ah... to be honest I hadn't even thought about a booze prohibition." Seth admitted, scratching the back of his head with his free paw-hand. "But that's another reasont to stash this stuff. I had actually been preparing for a day where..." He dropped his voice down low. "...they would ban me from coming here or punish me or something. I'm afraid I'm a bit of a troublemaker, you see. But now that you mention it, that's another good reason to hoard this precious stuff."

He practically backed into the corner as the huge hulky gorilla-man stretched. Although he himself was a predator and could be fierce in times of need, his instincts told him to run more than often enough.

"Hmm, why would anyone wanna see me dead?" He flicked an ear, pondering the question for a moment, his gaze drifting towards the ceiling. "I dunno really. Ever met Richard? He... she didn't think too much of me when I told her to get off my turf. I still have the puncture claw marks in my chest to prove it." A disgrunted snort escaped him. "b*****d. If that keeps going the way it is, she'll claim the whole bloody island as her territory before the end of the month."

"Heh. I think they're getting soft. I had fun getting rid of 'Big Brother' only to be taken back to my room. Not even a slap on the bottom," he bragged and chuckled as if he was above being punished.

He slurped his beer some more and tried to put a face to the name that Seth provided. Richard....Richard...?? He couldn't recall ever meeting anybody with that name, or if he did, they'd never made a lasting impression. And Seth's correction of gender seemed to go un-noticed by Oz, at least for now.

"Claiming territory? People really do that? Thats just friggin' warped," he said, somewhat dismayed. "Say, come 'ere a sec?"
PostPosted: Tue Apr 03, 2007 4:37 am

Seth was quiet as Oz mentioned getting rid of 'Big Brother' and thought about the statement for a moment. Did it really mean what he thought it did?

"The cameras, right?" Seth spoke very quietly, the aloof and amused expression completely gone from his face. "I've been killing them too. One chomp and they're gone. But bloody hell - they keep coming back..."

He looked even more unhappy, partially guilty as Oz stated that claiming territory was weird, and made no additional comment to that statement. He knew it was weird, it was unnatural, yet he still did it. Why? He still didn't know. But it felt comfortable and right to do so, plus it was something to do...

"Oh, sure thing." He stepped forewards from behind the bar and headed over to stand in front of Oz's bar stool, curious. "What's the matter?"

"Yup," he stated simply, taking a swig from his bottle. "The buggers have cameras in the duplexes too. Perverts. If they wanna see my big arse when I'm getting dressed, leave them to it. I already know my arse is irresistable."

He couldn't help smirking and chuckling at his drink-fuelled casual jokes, despite the creepy truth of the cameras. The drink was also making him less cautious with what he said. But since his lack of punishment, Oz hadn't felt the need to be careful.

He leaned a little bit as Seth approached and then gently took hold of his muzzle, tilting his head to one side then the other, like he was judging a dog in a dog show.

"Y'know, you look familiar...I've seen ya around but I've met ya somewhere else..."
PostPosted: Tue Apr 03, 2007 4:27 pm

Seth had to chuckle at Oz's comment about the cameras. It was creepy and downright invasive, but he never thought about it in the way Oz had worded it. It was true though...

He quickly snapped out of that thought and practically froze solid as his muzzle was grasped. It hadn't been an aggressive move, but it still made him edgey nevertheless. His eyes were wide and alert, his eyes fixed on Oz's hand as his snout was examined.

"I dunno," He mumbled through his teeth, trying to restrict movement in his jaw while Oz still had a hold of it. "I'd think I'd be pretty recognisable with the stripes on my arse and such. You stand out pretty easily yourself. Took me a bit to put a finger on it, but I know I'd seen you around before. You're that guy who changed the day I was at the construction site. Scared six bells outta me, it did. Wouldn't forget that in a hurry."

Oz let go of Seth's muzzle as gently as he'd grasped it. He was sure there was more to this fella than just seeing him at the construction site.

"Yeah...I can't seem to forget that in a hurry either," he replied flatly, taking the final swig from his beer bottle, and then placing the empty delicatley on the counter.

"Wait a minute, you used to be a damn-sight more human looking and was pissed with the labs. Weren't you the one with the escape plot?"

Damn, that seemed like so long ago. Oz must have still been human, or close to human after his first change, when he'd first been privy to Seth's ideas for escape.
PostPosted: Wed Apr 04, 2007 4:01 pm

He backed up a bit and rubbed his muzzle as it was released again. Although Oz's grabbing of it hadn't been any kind of aggressive gesture, it had made him feel awkward, edgey and vulnerable. He was immediately calmer once he was free of the other man's grip again.

"Yeah, mate..." He grumbled, scratching the back of his head. "All of us used to be a hell of a lot more normal lookin'. But after this place is done with us, I don't think we'll have an ounce of humanity left. I've seen some blokes that've been twisted in such a bad way, you wonder how the hell any of this science crap is done to us..." He shuddered for a moment as he thought of Jordan's tiny extra pre-tauric limbs, and then Richard's tentacles.

"Yeah, I'm the one with the escape plan," He mumbled in a low voice, nodding. He stared back at Oz once more and squinted hard, racking his brains as he thought, wondering how this person knew about his plans to escape. Just how many people knew now?

"Oh wait, wait..." His brow was furrowed in frustration now, he couldn't quite put a finger on it. "Ah!" He smacked his left fist down on his right palm in his excitement. "You're that bloke I met in the entertainment room. The... alcoholic recovery bloke. You were told this hell-hole was a rehab-clinic, right?" He paused, eyeing Oz's empty beer bottles, a sudden wide amused grin forming on his maw. "That's not really working out either, is it. I mean, this island has TURNED me into an alcoholic, and I don't blame you one bit. Bloody hell."

"But yeah..." He nodded, his expression becoming serious once again. "I'm the one with the plot. And boy, am I ever." He scowled in determination.

Oz didn't want to think about anyone who was worse off than he was. Someone who had more painful changes. More instincts to battle. More humanity to lose. Right, now, nothing mattered except himself. He could have commented on Seth's sympathy for those who did have it worse, but he didn't.

"Yeah, that WAS me. And yeah, didn't last long. A leopard can't change its spots," he said with a smirk at first, amused at Seth's triumph over his memory. But he seemed somewhat sullen at the end. Self-disappointment most likely.

He fiddled with his idle hands now, fingers running over the bumps on the bottle.

"...is it still on?" he asked after a slight hesitation and significantly hushed. He didn't change his body language though, in case cameras were watching.
