I think that Hurley's plot might be one of the most interesting out of all of the characters, probably because there's a certain karma-factor that's used in it.
I don't think that Hurley's so much 'unlucky' as he is a balancer of odds, I suppose. When he's alone he attracts all of the bad luck possible, as witnessed in the finale while he was trying to catch his plane; but it's when he's around other people that he has fantastic luck.
I think that what happens around him is that he absorbs the good luck of others, giving them extremely bad luck, but if he's alone, then all that remains is the bad, and that's why horrible things happen to him when he's not in a group, and also why horrible things happen only to others when he is in a group.
But, again, that's just my theory on the events that surround him.

That makes sense, I think... but how does that explain Walt beating him at ...what's that game called... backgammon? Or is that because Walt's just "special"? And another question- what bad things happened to the group when he was around? sweatdrop The plane crash? The being chased on the island? Arzt exploding?

That's one of the things about Hurley that doesn't make all too much sense to me.
I think that Walt's "powers" negated whatever curse was affecting Hurley; it might be because the curse is something that was thrust upon Hurley, and Walt was born with his powers. Also, Hurley's curse, though it occasionally brings him extremely good luck, his happiness over the good is much outweighed by his fear of the bad luck, which is brought upon him and others around him by his curse, whereas Walt's gifts work for him and always bring him what he wants, and, even though he's unaware of them, he is thankful for them. So I would assume that Walt's latent powers are stronger than whatever curse looms overhead.
The best explanation that I can come up with for the lack of bad luck being doled out by Hurley on the island is that he's given himself to the island, in some fashion. It's like how Locke has put his faith into the island since regaining the use of his legs, Hurley has been forced to give up everything that he had gained through the use of the numbers (money, success, etc.) and, because of that, the island allowed him some semblance of peace without having to worry about bringing horrible things upon himself or others. It was only when Hurley began focusing on the numbers once more that bad luck was brought upon Charlie while he was crossing the rope-bridge. I think that, because he no longer has any real ties to the island, because he's lost more than he gained from them, the curse sees no purpose in affecting him at the moment; however, when he gets off the island, he's likely to go back to the same cursed life that he had lived before.
The plane crash was confirmed to be not caused by any of the passengers, so it wasn't Hurley's bad luck, Walt's powers, or Claire's unborn child that brought it down. Also, Arzt exploding was just a case of stupidity on his part. xd

That makes a lot of sense, now that you explained it. I bet that Walt's "magic" thingamajig is stronger than Hurley's unluck. And now that Hurley's on an island, the numbers can't really do much. 3nodding
And I still bet that the Vincent episode will tell us how the plane crashed. It was in the baggage area of the plane, I tell you! xd Heh, stupid Arzt. Stupid blown to bits Arzt.

Better than having five billion Charlie or Sawyer threads. I love that Hurley is the character with big huge paragraphs being written about him.

Interesting points made...and I have to agree. Walt has a natural born power which makes him stronger.
I feel bad for Hurley though, especially when Libby died. He seems like a good man, if not somewhat spastic in the ways of dating.lol

DO YOU THINK THAT: Hurley and Libby had a relationship inside the mental institute? Something like that, anyway.

Awww i love Hurly, it upset me when Libby died, just when they were about to get together! And she was in the mental institue with him but never said. I think the episode when his imaginary friend was there telling him it wasn't real was a good one.

Hurley is one of my fav characters. He's always trying to make others around him happy. When he himself isn't. And I felt so bad for him when Libby died.
