Did you know that there actually was a John Locke? He lived from 1632 to 1704. I went to the webstite at, http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/locke/ and looked up his name. He was a philosopher and the site said "For the individual, Locke wants each of us to use reason to search after truth rather than simply accept the opinion of authorities or be subject to superstition." And then "His monumental Essay Concerning Human Understanding aims to determine the limits of human understanding," from http://oregonstate.edu/instruct/phl302/philosophers/locke.html Doesn't that sound like Locke? Do you think the producers did this on purpose?

I've always thought of it being on purpose. I think John Locke had a theory about tabula rasa, which is the name of an episode. I don't think anything like that is simply a coincedence.

There's also a writer/philospher type named Carlyle, and I came across another with the name of Sayid, but it was spelled differently.

Wasn't it the original John Locke, or one of his contemporaries, who helped inspire some of the elements of the US constitution?
Anyway.
Locke is my favorite character, because he is just SO FRIGGIN AWESOME. And because he can kill boar.
Le Flashback...
I was walking along a sort of gully behind my grandparents' house in Arizona. And a gimungous friggin boar came out of the brush and onto the path some ten yards ahead of me. Sniffed the air, turned to me. Started to charge. So i, of course, hauled a** out of the gully, the ugly, smelly b*****d hot on my heels. I had to scramble up a boulder to get away from the damn thing. It was huge; three feet high at the shoulder, long, sharp tusks... But it went away after a while. And ever since, i've hated pigs...
End Le Flashback.
So. Locke kills those sons of bitches. He kills 'em good.

Of course it was intentional...we are talking about J.J. Abrams here. 3nodding
Locke infuriates me at times, and his faith...then lack of it...then regaining his faith, was just annoying. At times I wanted to just slap him hard.
For some reason the man aggarvates me beyond all reason.

There's also Desmond, whose full name in the finale was revealed to be Desmond David Hume. David Hume was a philosopher who was heavily influenced by the teachings of John Locke. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Hume

Well of course it's not a coincidence, it never is inside the mind of J.J. Honestly, I never liked Locke and it irked me how he was so full of faith, but lost it so quickly...and he was ultimately wrong. Maybe he won't be so full of himself. And jeez, the man needs to calm down sometimes, being bossed around by Jack isn't that bad. ...Okay, maybe it would be.lol

Loved him in season 1, hated him with a passion in season two, and I like him in season three so far. I think he should have stayed a mute longer. crying
