.::.The Cerridwen.::.

The full moon rises high to its zenith, haloed by a wisp of cloud that casts an ominous glow upon the pool below. A white wolfess, young of age, turns her nose up to the sky and around her the bodies of the pack members shift nervously. Then comes the song, rising up from the white wolfess in tribute to the moon itself and after a moment her voice is joined with others.

The whole pack sings in worship.

Welcome to a new pack concept, brough to you by dbz2004 and Kimaria! Please make sure to read through everything here before posting as this pack has some strict requirements, it is also highly religious and demands a wolf reforming to the ways of the pack in order to live there in harmony.

.::.The Legend of Cerridwen.::.

Long ago, when the wolves were new to the world, there was one great wolfess who looked after them all. She was a majestic beast with wispy silver fur and eyes that shone like stars. She would guide them when they were troubled and bless them with joy and love so long as they heeded her. Soon her name became legendary and the wolves flooded to meet her, each one seeking a blessing. The name of Cerridwen brought hope and affection to all those who heard it.

The white wolfess welcomed all of them, for her love was great, and to everyone who sought her she gave to them a blessing. She would invite them to the sacred pool and let them drink from the bowl-shaped rock that she had filled with star-lit water. Her magic rock-cauldren was called Amen, and some said it was made from the essence of the stars themselves.

However, soon the wolfess came to realise that she could not help all of the wolves, for there were too many for her to tend to. Every day the strain on her worsened and she found that she had no time to hunt or roam free. So weary and tired, the wolfess chose herself a mate of fine white fur and together they had a family.

To her, eight healthy pups were born, six girls and two boys, and with their birth Cerridwen, died.

But Cerridwen did not truly die. Instead her soul lifted to the heavens and that night the moon gained a shine more brilliant than it had ever had before. Some said that if they listened carefully they could hear her voice in the wind and see her image in the moonlight. Some said she wasn't dead at all.

Those who believed in her reincarnation, proclaimed her a Goddess and signed their lives to protecting Amen from outsiders. It was these wolves alone that carried Cerridwen's name and made sure she was never forgotten. The Goddess' own children became keepers of Amen and they led the pack in ceremonies that kept them protected for many, many years.

But one day, on the night of the new moon, something terrible happened.

Evil came to the sacred pool.

In this time there were three priestesses, each one a descendent of Cerridwen herself. They were bathing in the pool, as was customary, when the strange wolves came.

They slunk from the shadows, their eyes glinting with cunning as they slipped down to circle the virgin wolves. In their growling voices was jealousy, for they were mangy lones, forced together in order to survive. They were jealous of the comforts of the Cerridwen wolves and had come down to see why they prospered even through the toughest of times.

Needless to say, their jealousy drove them to hate and finally to kill. That night the three priestesses were murdered, the pool stained red with their blood.

The dead females were discovered by the Mother of the pack and as she sadly moved to nudge at them, one wolfess stirred.

And on her dying breath, the priestess spoke;

"Murdered we are, destroyed by jealousy. But do not fear, for Cerridwen knows of this sin. One day she will guide the chosen ones back to Amen."

And so the Mother remained, waiting for the day when the chosen ones would return and revive the pack so ravagely torn.

.::.The Traditions.::.

Naming

At some point in their lives, the wolves of the pack will be blessed with a Spirit Name. This is their special, holy name that can be shared with no one but pack members. If anyone spreads this name to an outsider, the penalty is death.

The Spirit Name can be given to a wolf at any age, some don't even learn of it until they are close to death.

Some say that the names are given from Cerridwen herself and delivered in a sequence of dreams.

Example names are such:

Desert Song
Needless Fire
Luna Sky
Crystal Gazer
Wind Whisper.

These will be randomly generated by Kimaria or DBZ when the wolf has been RPed enough and deemed worthy of such an honour.

Goddess

The Cerridwen our wolves will worship is a play on the original Celtic Goddess:

Cerridwen is known as one of the Old Ones, she is a pre-Christian Goddesses of the Celtic World. She embodies all three lunar aspects of the Goddess, Maiden, Mother and Crone. She is worshipped through the Crone and the Cauldron of Wisdom, Inspiration, Rebirth and Transformation. The cauldron has an intimate association with femininity, justice, wisdom and intelligence which goes back to very ancient times.

Cerridwen brewed a magical formula, known as "greal" in her cauldren. For a year and a day, she kept six herbs simmering in her magical cauldron, known as "Amen".

To our wolves she dwells within the veyr moon, watching down on them all. She continues to watch over them in death and in return of her love and her blessings the wolves worship her and sing their chants with every full moon.

RITUALS
Please note, that when the mother, maiden or crone cannot perform the ceremony, the Priests and Priestesses are expect to take over in their stead. The Holy wolves help cleanse and prepare the area before a ceremony and stand closer to the cauldren then the rest of the pack.

Full Moon Ceremony

The ceremony begins with the entire pack gathered. They form an even circle around the pool that circles Amen. They must remain silent until they are given the signal.

The Holy Mother approaches Amen, stepping into the water an climbing up to stand over the cauldren. It is here that she invokes the Goddess Cerridwen with these words:

Dark Goddess of the Cauldron,
rebirthing us from conflicts of the past into the good
night of the present, we call you to stand by us as we look
into our souls and find the true purposes of our hearts.
Hail and Welcome!

Then she will drop red soil into the cauldren - that will be carried in her jaws and wrapped in leaves - and raise her head to the moon to recite the following:

Wondrous Lady of the Moon
You who greets the dusk with silvered kisses;
Mistress of the night and of all magicks,
who rides the clouds in blackened skies
and spills light upon the cold Earth;
O Lunar Goddess,
Crescented-One,
Shadow maker and shadow breaker;
Revealer of mysteries past and present;
Puller of seas and ruler of women;
All-wise Lunar Mother,
I greet your celestial jewel
at the waxing of its powers
With a rite in Your honor.
I pray by the Moon,
I pray by the Moon,
I pray by the Moon.

And on the final line she will turn the word "moon" into a howl, to begin her song of worship. When her first notw reaches it's full strength, the rest of the pack will join in, singing as one until the earth settles and the moon's reflection lies undisturbed in the water of the cauldren.

New Moon Ceremony

Begins as thus; the pack joins together to dance around the cauldren, chanting the name of Cerridwen in unison. They circle three times and on each pass must have spoken the name of the Goddess thrice.

The Maiden stands before the cauldren, silent and calm with her head bowed low.

Then when the chanting is over, they must turn to the cauldren and bow as one, lowering their heads so that their noses almost touch the ground.

The priest then steps forth and speaks thus;

Dark is the night as we reach this turning point. Here is a time of
death; yet a time of birth. Behold, the lady of Darkness, Mother, Grandmother. Old yet ever young.

Then the Maiden raises her head and speaks, whilst the rest of the wolves lie down, the Priest included.

Hear me! Honor me and love me now and always. As the wheel turns we see birth, death and rebirth. Know, from this, that every end is a beginning. Every stop a fresh starting point. Maiden, Mother, Crone. I am all of these and more. Whenever you have need of anything call upon me. I, and my Lord, are here, for I abide within you all. Even at the darkest of times, when there seems no single spark to warm you and the night seems blackest of all, I am here, watching and waiting to grow with you, in strength and in love. I am she who is at the beginning and the end of all time. So Mote It Be.

And then the Maiden lowers her head and the rest of the pack answer;

So Mote it be.

There is a moment of calm silence before the ritual comes to an end.

Waning Moon Ceremony

As the crone approaches the altar the rest of the pack quietly chant amongst themselves, verses of the dark mother's song. Then as she reaches Amen they fall silent and watch as she begins to speak, first out to the dark sky.

All ears hear! The circle is about to be cast, let none be present but of their own free will! Be it known that we are in the presence of the dark Goddess.

With this said she places the disc of silver into the water, to relect the waning moon above. Then she will give forth a lone howl and when it has died the pack must chant as one:

We all come from the Goddess
And to her we shall return.
Like a drop of rain,
Flowing to the ocean

Then the crone raises her head and her voice rises up above all other sounds. She speaks to the crone of the Goddess;

Dark Mother!! Crone of time!! We ask your presence and your blessing! All things to you must go, though darkness and death are your domain, you promise peace and rest! Thy gift is life! Yours is the hand that turns the wheel and cuts the thread. Be with us this magickal night! Give each of us your wisdom and bless our rite! So mote it be!

Then the rest of the pack speaks with:

So mote it be!

Then a silence reigns and al wolves must think hard on something they want removed from their life, whether it be something trivial or large. They must picture it and focus on it with all of their consciousness. Then when a moment has passed the crone will speak again;

Dark Lady of the waning moon!
We thank you for your presence
and your blessing, and in silence we turn within
and willingly offer
to thy realm that which is old and outdated,
that which no longer has life and no longer grows.
We offer to thy Blade that which
we no longer need.

Let all ears hear! The circle is open but remains unbroken!

And with that the ceremony is completed.

.::.Ranks.::.

(Please note that the beta positions have to be fought for. The Gamma wolves will also have to fight to proove their strength. Anyone that fails to impress will be cast into the Omega position, though this is a rare occurance. Omega's will be picked on by the pack so we don't want more than two or three in the pack.)

Alphas (The Ira)

- Yasuo - RPed by dbz2004
- Orphen - RPed by Kimaria

Summary: These are the 'sacred guardians' the 'chosen ones' who have the prophecy lying on their shoulders. They work together as equals, neither more important than the other. Then need to be physcally and mentally strong and earn respect from the entire pack, including the Holy Trinity. They oversee all things that do not involve worship or ceremonies, for that is overseen by the trinity themselves. Their main duties is to lead search parties, hunting parties, to make sure everyone is sticking to the rules and working efficiently as a pack. They put others in their place, set rules and make sure everything is running smoothly. They are like the generals of the warriors.

Betas (The Delmi)

- needed!
- needed!

Summary: These wolves are similar to Captains, their eyes see where the alphas do not. They help keep everyone in order and speak when the alphas are unable to. They must be loyal, trusted and respect and follow the law of Cerridwen. They must be strong, cunning and swift, able to lead wolves into battle.

Gammas (The Aida)

- needed!
- needed!
- needed!
- needed!

Summary: These form the main body of the pack, they must be believers and followers, working for the alphas to achieve a greater well-being. They can be given many jobs and are expected to follow them. These can be anything from hunting, to guarding, to patroling or searching. Some can be named assassins and given orders to hunt down the traitors. They are the main 'army' of the pack if you will, and are formed with the strongest males and females.

Omegas (The Osma)

- needed!
- needed!

Summary: Omega wolves are rare in this pack, mostly because the wolves that dwell here are strong of heart, due to their faith, it is this alone that keeps them from being around too much. Though the possibility is always there. Weak wolves; runts or sickly ones, will often be forced into this rank by the others. But this is not a ncie position to be in. Osma wolves are often given the nastiest jobs during some of the ceremonies, it has also been known for them to be used as sacrifices. They can get involved with other events though, such as hunting and scouting, though they will be kept out of any fighting. Omega wolves can always challenge a Gamma to gain respect and bump up his rank a notch - This can happen anytime.

-------

The Crone (The Sage)

- Ola - RPed by Kimaria

Summary: The crone is the wise woman, the wolfess who knows everything there is to know. Some say she has direct communication with Cerridwen herself! She offers advice and though she is terribly old, shows no sign of dying any time soon. She has the same respect as the alphas in some ways, though in a more religious sense. If anyone has any troubles or has commited a terrible deed, they may go and talk to the crone to try and ease their troubled spirits. She is a guide but she is also feared. She has an incredible knowledge that holds great power, which makes many wolves tremble in her presence.

The Holy Mother (The Mitja)

- ??? - RPed by Werewolf

Summary: The Holy Mother is the most loved wolf of the entire pack. As her title suggests, she is kindly and motherly. She is in control of the blessings of pups who have been presented to her as promising Priests or Priestesses. She is treated with a gentle respect and much love. For she is seen as the mother of the pack, the mother of their future and of course a part of the Goddess herself. The scar on her belly was given to her after she birthed the Holy Maiden, as proof of the greatness she has given to the world.

The Maiden/Virgin (The Caja)

- Lewana - RPed by Kimaria

Summary: The Maiden, as her name suggests, must be young and pure. They are usually born of the Holy Mother and has fur that is white. They are forbidden to take a mate and be touched by anyone other then the Mother the Crone of the Priests and Priestesses. Mating is forbidden and so is being touched by the other pack members. She is the most solitary wolf of the pack, she may not hunt nor may she dirty herself with mud. She must bath regularly in the pool around Amen to cleanse herself.

-------

The Priest and Priestess (The Thana/Thanu)

- Needed!
- Needed!

Summary: The Priest and Priestess, for there is usually one of each, are taught in the ways of worship. They have permission to lead ceremonies if one of the trinity are unable to. They are treated with respect and can sometimes operate outside of the alpha's orders, if those orders are given by one of the trinity and if they are doing 'Cerridwen's work'.

The Sacrifices (The Lefu)

- Needed!

Summary: Yes, sadly sacrifice, means sacrifice. If your wolf is unlucky enough to become one of these then they are most likely going to meet an untimely death. Sacrificial ceremonies are used to calm Cerridwen's wrath. If you have commited a terrible sin then you could very well become a Lefu. In times of great need, an Osma will be used in replace, to try and calm Cerridwen's temper. (Please note that your wolf is not at risk of becoming a sacrifice unless you OCly/ICly make that decision and inform us.)

.::.The Territory.::.

The Amen

Amen is a naturally formed cauldren shaped at the top of a funnel of rock that sits in the middle of the 'Sacred Pool'. This is where the ceremonies take place. Amen is usually filled with water, taken from the pool around it. Ingrediants are then added, ie; red soil, silver. To reflect the moon or lack of moon above. None may approach this, other than the holy wolves. Any other pack member that does faces extreme punishments.

Sacred Pool

The Sacred Pool surrounds Amen and can only be entered by the Holy Ones. Any that are seen drinking from it without permission are punished. However, during protection celebrations, those that have come to be healed or cleansed may drink, though only one mouth full per wolf.*

Lake Tegid

The Lake of Tegrid is a large, flat expanse of water that protects the West side of the packlands. The main den overlooks the water and it is a place of community where people gather to meet. There is a legend of a great sea monster that lurks beneath it, told to pups to keep them from straying too far and getting into danger. Rabbits are often seen grazing on the short grass by the water's edge and otters have been seen in the water.

Lunah Forest

This forest engulfs much of the packlands and in fact holds most of the dens inside it. The forest breaks away to create a rather large clearing where Amen stands. The trees here are huge, thought to be so because they have been planted on holy ground.

The Meadow

The meadow lies to the south, fanning out as the lake drops away. The grass here grows long and encourages many deer to graze here.

The Point

This is a steep cliff face that juts up from the heart of the Lunah Forest, the only way up to the higher land is to climb it or walk alongside it for many days. It's steep face is dangerous but if one is careful they can leap from ledge to ledge. This is the lookout point in times of need but forbidden to climb unless absoloutely necessary.

*see cleansing/protection ceremony for more information

.::.The Sins and the Law.::.

The Laws

1. Worship none other than Our Lady Cerridwen.
2. Keep the moon's light ever holy.
3. Never share one's holy name to those not of Cerridwen's love.
4. Do not taint the Pool or Cauldren, drink only with the blessing of our Goddess.
5. Show love and kindness to all, except those who betray the Holy Wolf herself.
6. Mate only with the alpha's permission.
7. Make sacrifice to quench Cerridwen's wrath.
8. Show faith with every full/new and wane of the moon.
9. --
10. --

The Sins and their Punishments

1. To be Claimed a Traitor
To lose faith, to turn ones back on Cerridwen.
The Punishment depends on rank of the wolf. If of lower rank they are simply chased from the pack, never to return unless they wish death. If the wolf is of higher rank then they will be given as a sacrifice to Cerridwen.

2. To Share One's Name with a Non-believer
To give one's secret and holy name to one not of the pack
The Punishment is severe. The wolf is not chased from the pack, but rather has it's tongue bitten, leaving the wolf unable to speak for a long time, if ever again.

3. Trespassing
To stray into the Sacred Pool or to Amen
The Punishment is less severe for pack members. They are forced to run around and around the pool until exhaustion claims them and they collapse, watched under the eyes of one of the Trinity. If the trespasser is not of the pack they will be threatened, injured and sent away. If they refuse to leave they are brought before the alpha and if claimed guilty, are slain as a sacrifice.

4. Forbidden Mating
Involves a pair of wolves that are not Alphas or Betas, who produce pups or are caught in the...act.
The punishment for the pack members; ie Gammas and Omegas, who breed without permission from Yasup and Orphen will have their pups slain at birth. They will also be marked for shame, their hindquarters scarred with the mark of disobedience.

5. Unattendance Holy Ceremonies
To not attend a ceremony without good reason
If a wolf cannot give a good enough reason for missing a ceremony they are set upon by the beta's who will 'roughen them up' until the alpha's give the order to stop.

.::.The Trinity.::.

The Crone

Moon: Waning
Colour: Black
Season: Winter
Represents: Third and final phase. The death she represents is necessary for rebirth.
Symbolic of: wisdom, experience, change, transformation and death.
Ceremonies: Working with the Crone is related to rituals that are about the ending of things, extreme protection or retribution (assault, abuse), passing through menopause, or dealing with a death.
Other: The Crone is the ancient holy one. She is grandmother, witch and hag. She has been ignored, trivialized, blamed and feared, for she holds powers that others deny. Powers of time and transformation. Powers we may fear, but would do better to understand.

The Crone is the Mother of all Mothers. She knows all your bedtime stories, and all your worst nightmares.

She is the One Who Knows Death. She will introduce you to your shadow. She can free you from your fears. The Crone is She Who Has Gone Beyond.

She has lived many years and many lives. Her feet know the paths of the Ancestors. Through her we can touch those who have gone before. She has lived for love, for power, for grace. Now she lives for herself and her journey. She travels new roads and dares the unknown.

She is ancient, but not always aged. She may be beautiful, but she's not pretty. She Who Has Gone Beyond goes beyond our idea of what a deity or a woman may be.

"Crone"
Cool nights her domain, winter snow her shawl,
Reaching with bent fingers to break silver threads,
Opening the veil between this world and another
Natural, wisened, cold and ancient.
Ever there to greet us, in her sweet realm of sleep.

The Mother

Moon: Full
Colour: Red
Season: Summer and fall
Represents: The second stage.
Symbolic of: fertility, growth, sexuality and ripeness. She also is in a position of power, either from her life-giving forces or in her actions to defend her young.
Ceremonies: Working with the Mother often happens when projects are reaching fruition, in rituals as part of marriage and childbirth, for protection of people or animals, and when working with plants.

"Mother"
Molding from earth the lives of her children,
Oceans of stars adorn her full figure
Touching our minds with soft silver smiles,
Holding us close in her infinite bosom,
Endearing, encouraging, protective and strong,
Revered and worshipped, she embraces us all.

The Maiden

Moon: New
Colour: White
Season: Spring
Represents: The second stage.
Symbolic of: Newness, youth, purity, and innocence
Ceremonies: Specific instances when you might want to invoke the Maiden are during any new beginnings, at the start of a new relationship and as part of a puberty ritual for young girls.
Other: Fresh flowers, new grains and the color white are all appropriate for working with this energy. Springtime rituals often involved.

"Maiden"
Making her way through rain-kissed springtime,
Answering bird's calls with songs of blessing,
Inpeneterable and pure, touched by no one,
Dancing to the beat of her Mother's great waves,
Enduring, renewing, loving and wild
New and forever young, she rules the dawn.

.::.Pack Behaviour.::.

This pack will work similar to a real wolf pack works. Wolves will fight for dominance, which will happen just before the main mating season.* Those who refuse to fight or fail to gain any sort of dominance - even to being a Gamma, will be knocked straight to omega.

For omegas life will be hard. They will be picked on, last to eat and basically treated how omegas are treated in true to life wolf packs.

The alpha pair may be challenged for their rank too.

It must be understood that in this time, even if friends must fight friends, no grudges should be held. This is their way of life, how they life. They know that sometimes they may have to fight one another, but they still remain family, as if it had never even happened.

No one may kill or maim a wolf during this time.

--

Around the mating season most wolves will become edgy, sensing that the time draws near. The females seem to gain a certain power around this time and the Holy Mother seems to be in her element, giving advice to the couples who have been given permission to breed. Males will become very protective over there females.

A male may only mate with oe female at a time, though partners can change each time.

--

When the time comes for pups to be born, the pack bands together to protect the dens where the pregnant females lie. The females give birth in secret and the Holy Mother is the first one to hear nes of the event. She then spreads the good news throughout the pack and thenight is filled with song and joy to celebrate the new life.

With pups around, again, the pack joins together to create a protective unit, each one protecting all the cubs and making sure they are safe and sound.

*Please note that breedings will not be restricted. The main breeding season is where the alpha wll try to produce pups born during the 'holy season' to try and produce blessed offspring.

.::.The Marks.::.

There are certain specific marks that take great meaning in the Pride. They are listed below and are often seen carved into the flesh of a wolf, leaving a scar that imprints. Some of them are blessings whilst others are curses.

1. The Triskele
Image: (xx)
Desc: This sign represents the holy 'three'. It symbolises the power of life and rebirth. It is a blessing mark that is worn by a Holy Mother. It symbolises her success in birthing a Maiden and grants her one of the most esteemed ranks in the pack.

2. The Inverted Pentacle
Image: (xx)
Desc: Symbolises the place where the fallen angels are fettered. It is a sign of rebellion, it's three downward points symbolising the rejection of the holy Trinity. It is given to wolves of the pack that have commited a terrible crime.

.::.Customing a Wolf.::.

Okay, so you've read the info and you're interested in customing a wolf. A Priest or Priestess, a Gamme or a Beta? Well sure! There's just a few things you must remember!

- Wolves must be natural coloured. If you have any odd markings then please ask us first, before going ahead and customing one. We can't bend the rules for one wolf and not for others. We want this wolf pack to be filled with wolves that aren't florescent blue. No offence to any wolf that happens to be that colour of course, it's just a requirement for this pack.

- Wolves must also have no items on them. They must be plain. They can have scars, though if you want them to have one of the scars mentioned in this thread for plot purposes, please ask first. They cannot have jewellery to make them more fancy, as this pack speaks of equality.

Anymore questions please post them here!
