Brychan had left that morning to challenge Fell Lore. Having ascended the hill to the home oak, where the Lord had stood. The sounds of battle had ensued, and it had attracted the attention of many herla below. However, most of the battle was out of view of the others and eventually the sound of sparring antlers had stopped.

The fight had been a relatively peaceful one. He didn't have any marks on his body. Brychan had descended the hill, with head held high... trying to look dignified and proud despite his loss. Thus, it wasn't entirely certain at first glance who had been the victor. He could be retreating... or merely coming to retrieve his hinds after the victory. The rumor mill instantly started up again, whispering being passed around from herla to herla. Brychan didn't really care, he knew the truth after all.

Soon he arrived where his harem was gathered, a bark being given out from the stag in greeting to the trio of females if they were around. They could have gone down to the stream in his absense after all. He had hoped atleast one of them would be there to greet him.

There was at least one of Brychan’s hinds there. Telyn’s ear flicked as she heard his familiar bark and the gray hind stood up trying to look graceful about it. She felt it was proper for a Lord’s hind to be graceful. While she liked being up to date on rumors---or, at least, the ones dealing with her or her stag---she hadn’t heard the news just yet.

Looking over at Brychan, Telyn tried to find any clues as to the outcome of the match. She should have watched it, she knew, but… well, she didn’t want to insinuate that she wasn’t taken. Leaving the little territory that Brychan had marked out would hint at that, wouldn’t it? Oh, and she was just feeling lazy. That was probably the most important thing today.

Hmm… well, the starry stag seemed as if he had won. He wasn’t looking at all depressed or scratched up, as far as Telyn could see. So, he had won then. Telyn held her head high and greeted her stag with a friendly nudge to the shoulder.

“Hello, Brychan. How did the match go?”

He was trying to be graceful about the defeat. He had been determined not to let it drag him down. For really.. it had been a learning experience, and he would be more prepared next year. He just.. wasn't ready this time around. However, as he approached Telyn and she asked the question... the first sign he gave was the lowering of his blue gaze. He was disappointed, but most of all... he had worried about disappointing the girls. They had been so supportive of him.

"I lost" he finally said in a soft, quiet manner. Still, he did not hunch over or look depressed. Infact... behind that disappointment there was a certain fire in his eyes. A determination to become stronger and do better next time. He smiled lightly, "I wasn't ready this year, but I will try harder next time." Her nudge was well recieved, the stag offering a nuzzle to Telyn's neck in return.

“That’s great, Brycha—wait, you lost?” Telyn started to speak without really listening to the stag’s words. Slowly, his admission of defeat filtered into her brain. He had LOST? How had he lost?! She had given him a pep talk and everything! Pep talks always won the challenges! That was the entire reason for pep talks. Or, at least, they always won in stories… Telyn pointedly reminded herself that this was real life and not just a story. It was oddly annoying how often she had to do that.

Stifling her disappointment, she smiled at Brychan anyway. How dare he lose after her pep talk?! Didn’t he know how difficult it was to give that pep talk and act almost lovey-dovey with him? In public?! Still, no matter how disappointed she was, she was prepared to bet that he was feeling even worse.

“That’s still great, Brychan,” she said stubbornly, refusing to admit that she had been expecting him to win. “There are plenty more Anlachs to come.”

Rhomae walked slowly to her harem's little hill, returning from a small chat with Loreena. She had heard rumors of what had happened - hence why she was returning - ...but she knew not the actual truth. No doubt Brychan would be back by now. However, she wish she had an idea of what state he would be in.

Approaching Brychan and Telyn, she noted that he did not look injured - physically, at least. There was a strength in his eyes...but a soft spot in his heart. And not the good kind. And when she saw Telyn's sudden shift from happy to sad, her eyes darkened a little - he had lost. Ah, well. Next year, then.

The grey-white hind who looked as if tar had been poured over her top half stopped in front of her harem-mate and her stag, assessing them both with her eyes. She didn't need to ask what happened, so she didn't. However, she did need to reassure Brychan. He looked as if he needed it. Disappointed in him she was not...concerned, she was.

"A defeat in the present only means a more spectacular victory for you in the future, love." she said softly, nudging him with her nose. "And we will still walk with you despite victory or defeat."

She couldn't hide it from him, Brychan knew that Telyn was disappointed. He saw it in her eyes.. and the way she moved. Telyn was a lot of things.. but she was not a very good liar. Still.. he smiled despite it all, glad to hear her words... and that of Rhomae's as she approached.

"I'm sorry... I let you down" he said softly to the grey hind. His demeanor a bit melancholy now, despite his determination to do better next time. "I am glad to hear that" were his words spoken to Rhomae, an affectionate lick given to her nose. He appreciated their support, and knew he would need it in the future just as much as he needed it now. A little boost in confidenece and just a bit of ego stroking could go a long way with a stag.

"Fell Lore is a strong stag... Waoki was right. I do need to grow more." He snorted and stomped a hoof, "However, I learned a lot from the fight... before this time next year, I'll get myself to Captain." There was no ifs with that.. he would work hard and push himself higher in the ranks and earn the respect of those in the herd. All the while, learning and preparing himself for the next Anlach.

it was unfortunate for Loreena, that word of the battles end had to come from some hind down at the stream, catching up with her friends, only to be interrupted with the arrival of gossiping females, And not the most positive of gossipers at that.
Upon hearing the news of Brychan's defeat, Loreena spared no good byes, before she was hurriedly trotting back to Brychan’s territory. Knowing very well what kind of lies those Hind were capable of creating, but worrying nonetheless.
A Stags pride could easily be bruised, and it stung her to think of Brychan’s disappointment, if of course the news was true that he had lost.
The first thing she saw as she came upon the territory was Rhomae. Opening her mouth to call out to her, but only breath came, as she saw Brychan and Telyn.
Ears lowering, she continued forward into the small family group. Looking at Brychan for any hint of what to really expect, not wanting to listen to those gossiping hind.

“You didn’t let any of us down, Brychan, not at all!” Even with her horrible lying skills, Telyn still felt compelled to say this. Sure, she was a little disappointed, but it wasn’t as if he had failed completely or anything. “Rhomae is right. You’ll win next time. You’re healthy and you weren’t hur…” she paused and looked over the stag with a bit more concern as she considered her last words.

“You haven’t been hurt, have you?” He didn’t look hurt at all, but looks could be deceiving. She nosed him again, as if that could somehow prove that he was perfectly fine and safe. At the sound of another herla approaching, Telyn looked over her shoulder to see Loreena’s arrival. Out of respect for the favorite, she shifted slightly, to allow the red hind to be closest to Brychan. She didn’t have a lot of respect for Loreena, but she had enough for that.

Brychan nodded slowly.. taking comfort in Telyn's words. While he knew they were all disappointed, he was glad to know that he hadn't let them down. He has another year to grow stronger before next Anlach and to make a new challenge. He would get there eventually, he was determined to. This stag's ambitions were not so easily discouraged.

The stag shook his head, "No.. I'm fine. Fell Lore is a peacable stag, thus the fight wasn't very violent." Infact.. Fell Lore had told him he hadn't planned on participating in Anlach at all. With the exception of Brychan's challenge to his position as Lord.

When Telyn stepped back, blue eyes blinked, and that's when he took notice of the approaching Loreena. A smile was given to her, although a slightly sad one. There was no need for words really... he had lost, and it showed in his expression. Yet, he was not so downtrodden to the point that he was defeated in spirit.

give a moment to Telyn, nodding her head thankfully as she moved to let Loreena approach Brychan.
it didn't take long for her to learn the truth from his expression.
though it did not need he was hurt physically nor did not confidence, and good nature take a beating from this either. but there was disappointment, something, she was sure he would learn to ignore or forget in time.

ears still lowered respectfully, she smiled back at him.
"I am glad you are safe" she said softly, remembering the last time he had gotten into a duel, he had bled that time.
touching her nose against his for a moment, satisfied with his condition, she turned back to look at Telyn, stepping back to allow the gray Hind to step forward again. though remaining in the group, watching there brave, strong stag, shining even in his defeat.

Rhomae smiled as she was given an affectionate lick, remaining quiet, looking over Brychan carefully as Telyn brought up the idea that he may in fact be injured. After assurance that he was not, however, she still watched him. Should there be some injury unbeknownst to him, they needed to take care of it. Quickly, if at all possible.

Rhomae remained silent as Brychan and Loreena exchanged words. Few words. Loreena needed to speak more - she didn't seem like the quiet type, she seemed as if she was merely frightened, or something. Rhomae liked Loreena - perhaps she would be able to coax her out of her shell one day...

The hind shook her head, returning her thoughts to the matter at hand. "Brychan," she began softly, inclining her head t'wards the hill. "It seems odd to me that he wished not to participate. Did Fell Lore cite any reason for it?"

It was a relief to hear that Brychan was unhurt, and an even bigger relief to know that Fell Lore apparently didn’t hold anything against the other stag for the challenge. Then again, why would he? Challenging was what stags did at this time of year. She took her place once more as Loreena moved back, slightly bothered by the lack of words that passed between the pair. She supposed that she ought to feel moved by the way that Brychan and Loreena knew each other so well that there was no need for words, but… well… she wasn’t. Couples ought to talk more, she felt.

But, she wouldn’t say anything. This was their business, not hers. She followed Rhomae’s gaze towards the hill, suddenly considering the other hind’s question. It certainly was odd… it was probably simply because Fell Lore was getting older and more easily tired. Speaking of more easily tired, Telyn herself had found that her energy had been running oddly low lately.

“It is a little unusual… but, perhaps to be expected. Fell Lore is getting on in years.”

Perhaps Brychan had expected Loreena to say a bit more as well, but he still smiled and nodded to his favored hind as she stepped back. Ears flicking forward as Telyn resumed her place. Rhomae's question caught his attention though, and he was soon to answer. "He doesn't like the violence" Brychan said with a nod. The stag pausing a moment to let out a short, amused laughed, "We even debated this while sparring!"

The Outrider shook his head, "Fell Lore is an interesting stag. He's not -that- old... and he is strong, even wise." He would not.. he refused, to put down their current lord. If there was a virtue that Brychan had, it was loyalty. There was no reason for him to doubt Fell Lore's reasons. They were his choices alone... and while he didn't agree with him completely, it was not his place to judge.

Gaze passing over the three once more, Brychan seemed to notice Telyn's sudden weariness. The stag stepping forward to nose her neck, "Are you alright, Telyn?" he asked with a light note of concern.

she was still very much shaken from the shock she had gotten earlier, and sad that Brychan had lost. she had hoped so much for him to become Lord this Anlach. the other two Hind seemed to speak everything she was thinking herself. leaving her to stand there in silence, watching Brychan and her Herem sisters carefully.

her ears never perked up, remaining flatted against her head in consern. glancing over at Rhomae as Brychan and Telyn exchanged words, she attempted to smile, only to make it look somewhat forced.

Rhomae smiled a little. Debated while sparring, hmm? Interesting. The idea of two males chatting lightly while fighting over the leadership of an entire society struck her as entertaining. Though, she doubted it was 'chatting lightly', more like...getting in a word when and where they could.

She could understand the reasoning, though. Almost. Rhomae felt that it was only violence if the aggression was taken overboard. Otherwise, it was just...the natural way of things. Debating wasn't how you won mates. Winning mates was the natural way of things. So...if he wished not to participate, noble a cause as it may be.....well. Rhomae would be kind, and attribute it to pacifism.

Rhomae blinked at Brychan's expression of concern over Telyn. As a matter of fact, there had been something odd about the female for a spell, and it seemed to be getting worse. Well...'worse' was a harsh word. Increasing, rather. Telyn seemed only mildly bothered by it, and never said anything to the attention of it. Whether by personality or some other reason, Rhomae knew not the reason for her silence.

The black-and-white hind waited patiently for the other hind's answer. It would be interesting to see what happened.
