{:About the Guardians:}
Name: Kara Winters Age: 23 Race: Angel
About: Her origins unknown Kara was adopted by Daemon Winters and Yume Mizu Winters, both parents disappeared or died when she was very young. She currently is the mother of over a dozen children, she has help looking after them from her love Donovan.
Between looking after the inn, the school she founded along side Tracy Scott and of course all the children she has her hands full. Fortunately half of her Second children have grown up and begun families of their own.
Name: Lau Donovan Age: 25 Race: Human
About: Donovan hails from the East, from the Lau clan, and was a former assassin by profession. For the most part, Donovan is retired in being an assassin and now uses his skills to be a mercenary choosing jobs that won't conflict with Kara's morals or his own.
He hadn't expected to fall in love, but now he finds himself being the father to her children (for those still young enough to need a father that is), and taking care of Kara.

{:About The Family:}
Winters Siblings: While most people would agree families tend to get big, but this family is huge. Kali has over a dozen siblings, and the numbers change as time goes on. Many of them are Seconds like her, and most of them are much older than her in age. All of them ranging from angels like her mother to mermaids and elves.
Nieces and Nephews: Even though Kali is young compared to most of them (or the same age!) she is alread the aunt to nine other Seconds, one is the son of Yuki, three belong to Yue, Triton had adopted a neko and Elnara has five Seconds of her own.
Daemon Winters: Daemon is Kali's grandfather, who has been missing since her mother was very little. He's currently sealed inside a sword, and has been lost in the Four Lands over a lot longer than anyone has been alive.

{:Overly Organized:}
Journal Log July 4th, 2007
Kali was proven to be a most unusual child (which isn’t saying much when comparing her to the other children that have come into the family). I suppose for her age that I find most odd is her need to organize everything. Not just in the sense she has the urge to put her toys away neatly but she orders them by colours or shapes. Donovan thinks it’s some sort of game to her, and Yukito thinks that’s how she sees the world around here. The only other thing I’m aware of is that Kali is fascinated by technology. I’m not sure why, I think the telltale sign might be the mouse (of the computer variety) that she has, since the inn has always had the least amount of technology around. Well, there are the electrical plugs but she knows better than to play around with those and no one will let her play with the stoves.
She’s already asking questions, and it’s the hard questions that I have trouble answering like why the sky is blue and so forth. I should be grateful that she doesn’t always ask why, unfortunately she asks even harder questions in return. Donovan goes and sets her loose in the city’s public library, but I wonder at times if that’s just an excuse for him to see how things are going for Elnara.
Donovan at times acts like an over protective father, it makes me giggle. Kali isn’t that clingy to Donovan, but she likes to hang around him perhaps because he is the most technological adept. After all he knows how to use a computer, and has a cell phone and drives a van. I think he got a bit annoyed with her questions about how his van worked, though he promised to leave her with the mechanic the next time his van needed a full service check. Kali is the first second to call him father, which I thought was cute.

{:Educating Kali:}
Journal Log January 2nd, 2008
Kali is perhaps the quietest of the Seconds that I’ve been raising, the only one who’s as quiet as her was Trisha. Though unlike Trisha she has developed her interests early, specifically electronics, which I’m having a problem with. It is not that I have anything against technology, it is just I have little use for it in my own daily life. As a result, there is not much of that around her, except when she goes bother Donovan to look at his things like his laptop or his cellphone. Other than that I don’t have anyway to teach her without getting her those things as well. In addition Donovan or myself are the only ones who can really teach her anything. The other children never were fond of electronics, not that it was something I felt I had to teach them when I home schooled them since it was mainly the arts or magic. Fighters were looked after by the school, and out of the three children who fully went into the art of fighting, Triton doesn’t like computers at all. He’s not at all fond of them and would rather not deal with anything above a stove (he doesn’t like microwaves neither). As for the mer twins computers and any form of electronics is impractical to water dwellers for the most part.
Fortunately Donovan has been able to keep her busy, but without a laptop or something of the sort of her own, it won’t be long before she gets into something she is not suppose to. It makes one wonder how she deals with being in the Second world since it is mainly open land, but she keeps herself occupied with her datapad (the closest thing to a laptop I could get her at the moment) and just making note of things. I think if one let her she would make a note of her world and everything that lived in it. Who knows, maybe she would gather information on her own race and how everything is. One can only see how things will turn out in time.
In the meantime, I should strongly take Donovan’s advice and enroll her part time in some sort of school. Just so there is someone more knowledgeable that can teach her. Though I wonder if I should worry that Mi (Donovan’s mother) wishes to educate Kali about computer systems herself.

{:Fixing a Cellphone:}
Entrylog January 31st, 2008
It is a very disconcerting thing to watch yourself grow I think. Even though it has been a good several weeks since I grew, just thinking about it makes me a bit ill. Even though it didn’t hurt, not like the way it did with Serenity, but the mere fact that I watched myself grow made me ill.
Also in my head it was sort of weird to grow, or the aftermath of it all was. Things that wouldn’t click before suddenly become far more understandable now that I can see these things from a different point of view. In addition, things I thought I understood, when I read again I began to think differently about. It is as if my brain decided to rewire itself or something along those lines.
However this is an opportunity not wasted as I am going to try and put Daddy’s phone back together. Though I’m afraid that being out of the casing that some of the parts might have become wrecked, but I’m sure I can replace those. It just takes a bit of research and a lot of time and effort.
Mother has given up on trying to give me a proper education, she says if they use put me in a library I’ll learn myself. I’m fine with that, besides I like the library and the smell of books. The only thing I like more is the warmth from a computer. I really do hope I get a computer… I would like that.

{:Mysterious Illness:} Entrylog February 17th, 2008
What a bother, Yuki has had me running research errands all day since our newest arrival has come. Only this is an odd case, no one before has ever purposely put a child into out Mother’s care. Nor has it ever been a child (minus Elnara) that the family has known previous. Yet this is in the case of both. Toshiro has suffered from what some of us call the Sleeping Sickness. It is a sickness that strikes neglected Seconds, which has caused our world to at times resemble a graveyard of vases. Well…. Perhaps neglected isn’t the right world, there are Seconds after all that can raise themselves quite fine mind you. Yukito theorizes (and I agree with him) that it is only when a Second is no longer in the memory of the person who is supposed to be their guardian do they grow weak and therefore sleep. However, Toshiro flies in the face of our little theory because his owner has never forgotten him. Aidan has kindly put Toshiro into Mother’s care, because he has it means that Aidan still recalls Toshiro and still cares for him. So there is no reason why he should be sleeping as much as he is now. In fact even now, in Mother’s care he still sleeps, which makes Yukito and I believe that this is not the Sleeping Sickness, but if that is not what is ailing Toshiro, then what is it?

{:Observations:} Entrylog May 10th, 2008
Interesting…. There have been several theories or observations being made in the past week. First, of all I am correct when assuming that one’s amount of magical energy affects the growth of a Second. I do believe it varies from Second to Second the amount of needed energy they can create themselves. Of course, there are other factors involved, as one would notice there is the parental factor, something that has struck more than half of the Second population for having lack of. There are also some unknown factors in which, the result of it is out of one’s hands. Though, it does tell you a bit about our race, and that we… like the elves of Elnara’s world are mainly magical beings.
This outcome is only logical seeing as we also tend to learn very fast, many of us have exploited this ability to learn quickly. Lin being one of those people who is exploiting the fact she would continue to learn fast until she reaches adulthood. It creates the question though of how much Toshiro could have possibly known if he hadn’t been sleeping all the time, since he is after all the same age as Feng, Ryu and even Celebor through some world hopping.
Celebor, Feng and Ryu are not yet done their learning period, as they are not adults, so they could learn far more. Miyu is already showing to be a bright child and possibly tiring of her normal lessons, she is much older than Lin, though still young. So it would not surprise me in the least if Miyu is ready to get on with her education.
I have also discovered that mermaids have a nesting instinct, or at least Feng does. I don’t know how she came upon this vase, but since it has no parental figure except her, no one is going to notice it is missing. Actually, I suspect greatly that Feng had requested this a long time ago as her odd… nesting urges begun much longer ago. It is this or she has a mate no one is aware of, but as far as I can tell it is a full mermaid (though telling from vase is impossible as Miyu and Wararu have proven). I guess I won’t know until the thing is born, but I do hope her nesting urges will have ended by the time the Surprise comes. I have not informed mother or father of this development as I have deemed in dangerous to go near her at the current moment.

{:Technology:} Entrylog August 9th, 2008
Technology is such a catch 22, I say this because I’m starting to think to work with the electronics I love. For the uninformed (should someone in the future read this as research), my father has gotten me a laptop, and a cellphone. After I finally fixed the one I took apart as a child, in fact I did very well. I managed to extend the reception of the cellphone, granted it meant hacking into other providers, but he doesn’t need to know that.
As I was saying technology is a catch 22, I want to bring technology to the Seconds World (seeing as we are still very nature and not much technology based). Even the most basic of technologies would be good, but this is where the problem is. To create technology, to an extent you must harm nature. Now I’ve seen the cities, I’m not fond of the cities (I wonder if cityhall will take my suggestions for renewable sources of energy), but I love technology. I don’t want to ruin the nature of the Seconds World for technology, but I want to be able to at least build a house there!
Maybe I should actually learn how to grow trees or something so at least I don’t feel half as bad. Seeing as my projects would require trees, that is looking very tempting at this point. I must think on this.
In the mean time, I’m doing more research… on cars. I’m hoping to improve father’s van… if he’ll let me.

{:Reasons for Home:} Entrylog October 10th, 2008
It is so good to have everything settled and in their proper place. Unlike my other older siblings I have chosen not live in a home of my own, it is mainly for convenience than anything else. I want to be able to focus on my inventions, ways to improve the clan grounds and make sure the maintenance of the machines around here. I want to be able to make new things better things for my family, and I cannot do that if I must worry about feeding myself. Besides if anyone wants whatever I make, they can request to visit me, there is no need for me to have a store. It is too troublesome and encourages people to bother me.
The buildings currently on the grounds look old fashion enough, but they have the usual ‘modern’ conveniences of Gaians. Electricity, running water, heating and of course air conditioning. All of these are built into the houses in such a way that they are unnoticeable by the eye, the way it should be. These buildings a mixture of art, and technology is the ideal for housing I believe. Take the mers homes, on the outside it looks like a natural waterfall, with a large cliff like hill where water pours down, but inside it is a house like any other. There had to be a waterfall because it would make sure the water would not freeze over preventing the mers from exiting their home in winter.
I’m quite proud of that, and look forward to any more buildings we might need in the future. Until such a request is made though, I’ll be content on working on other things… perhaps better lightening so we can change them even less than we do now. Small things… my family is not so fond of having technology out in the open unlike myself.

{:The Driving Debate:}
“No.” “But Father, this would be a very useful lesson!” “No.” “But-“ “Kali, you are not learning how to drive, and why in the hell are you asking now of all times? It’s almost winter, hell it is winter!”
Donovan glared up at Kali from the paperwork he had been doing until she interrupted him. Sometimes he swore she picked the most annoying times to spring something like this on him! Not that he should have been surprised Kali always was the one who had an interest in technology compared to the rest of the family. She was the first to own a cellphone (after taking his apart), she had argued (begged) for a laptop and now she wanted to learn how to drive. Not that he minded it would be good for someone else in the family besides himself to know how to drive, he just wished it was earlier in the year and not now. Somewhere in the back of his mind Donovan knew he should be grateful, at least she wasn’t asking to drive a motorcycle. Though really he knew he shouldn’t hold his breath on that one.
“We do live out in the middle of nowhere Father, this area would be perfect for learning how to drive, and it is better to get use to the winter conditions now than later. Besides, the roads within the compound are always kept clear,” Kali pointed out logically. “Kali, even if you learn how to drive where in the hell are you going to get a car. Your business is just getting off the ground,” Donovan decided to change tactics. “Well then this would be a good opportunity to learn the mechanics of a car.” Donovan twitched at that, he should have figured she would say something like that, and knowing Kali she would want the most tricked out car if possible. Then again knowing her she would want a car and then trick it out herself.
“If I did I could repair your van instead of you taking it to the repair shop every time it needed fixing,” Kali pointed out, “And once I grasp the mechanics of it, I can update it. For all you are retired from assassination, you are not retired as a bodyguard and your tendency of being over protective a van that is well run with working navigator would prove most useful.”
Twitch.
“You cannot deny that would be most useful in your line of work.” “Kali… I have a mechanic,” Donovan replied, “And no one else drives but me.” “Which is why it would also be useful to have another member who can drive. It is only logical.” “There’s more to this than you wanting to drive,” he was grasping straws.
There was a pause, and for a moment Donovan could not believe he was actually right about that. Out of all of the children, Donovan knew Kali the least, but probably because she kept to herself more often than not.
“I want to test my theory out on the GPS system I’ve created, I’ve heard the current ones take too long to calculate and I want to see if this one is any better.” “Kali….” “I have also arranged to have tracking devices made that is tied into the system, so you could also have me add something extra to things like say… a cell phone? A piece of jewelry?”
Donovan knew he was predictable, after all he tended to be single minded about such things, but to know that Kali was using that against him well… it was like Shiro and Lin all over again. He glared at her, but knew it didn’t work that well on Kali and they both knew she was right. They both knew that what Kali was offering was very useful to them.
“Fine, but when the weather clears up,” Donovan grumbled, “I’m not teaching you out in the snow.” “Fair enough,” Kali smiled as she walked away knowing she had won this one.
After all, the trick was… not to tell him she what she really wanted was to learn how to ride a motorcycle.
