The sound of rutting stags still rang throughout the home herd as the deer fought for hinds, driven by the spirit of Anlach. The Lord of the Herd stood high on a hill, distanced from the fighting that had become so apparent in the land over the past days, grazing lazily in the warm sun. It was the second Anlach in a row in which he had tried his best to keep out of the fighting. He didn't find the need for it, really, although he understood what all other deer did - the need to keep the herd going. There needed to be new calves and fawns each year so that the red deer would not die out. But Fell didn't want that right now. There was no real reason as to these feelings, but he had spent all of this year's Anlach alone away from the fighting. Sometimes, he found himself wishing he knew where Lailoken was. They had good talks whenever they met, and the Lord could only remember too well the past year, just before Anlach, when he and the old stag had talked, concerned about the recent spottings of the undead in the mountains.

There had been whispers of the Lord's lack of participation in Anlach. Many attributed it to his advancing age, and that a challenge to his authority was imminent. Infact, there were also whisperings of another stag, an ambitious Outrider that wished to challenge Fell Lore and take the Lordship. Brychan was that stag... the starry pelted one with a fine set of antlers on his head. He had gathered three hinds this season, of which were on a lower hill not far from the home oak. Brychan had served well as an Outrider, and while he had not yet made Captain... that may well come if he didn't become Lord.

That very stag had been readying himself, and now he ascended the hill toward the home oak. A place that he had hoped to stand one day. Once topping it, the stag stood firmly. His stance was proud and determined, eyes blazing with confidence. However, he was not the rash sort.. he knew well that Fell Lore was not a weak stag. Still, here he was. Brychan lifted his head and bugeled into the air. A hoof pawing at the ground once his voice had faded, although still echoing through the valley. "Fell Lore! I've come to challenge you for Lordship of the herd!"

Perhaps they did think he was getting old. The stag shook his head with a small smile. Perhaps that was because none of them ever got close enough - save for Lailoken, Danica, and perhaps Dyani. It didn't do much to see his one blue eye. No, it didn't say anything. But one look into that fierce amber eye of his, and they would know. Fell was far from growing too old to be Lord, but none of them needed to know that if they didn't come to find out.

The figure of a dark stag breached the hill's peak and came to a rest, confident. Fell Lore stood silently for a moment, trying to place him. Ah, yes, Brychan. He nodded ever so slightly to himself. Yes, Brychan was a find young stag. He had been pondering making him Captain someday. But now here he was, his challenge rang out toward him. "Oh, there's no need to bellow so loud," Fell said to himself, that strange little smile still in place. But he tossed his head to answer the challenge.

Brychan chuckled heartily at the first words that came out of Fell Lore's mouth. The young stag in the throes of Anlach, tossing his head in an exuberance of eager energy. "No offense, but it is difficult not to. You can call it enthusiasm if you like." The starry pelted one smirking lightly.

Atleast the Lord remembered him, that was a good sign. As for the answer to his challenge, that he was still waiting for. "You've been hiding yourself a lot this Anlach my Lord, perhaps it is time for a change of pace?"

The Lord chuckled. "Oh, you don't want to underestimate your opponent, Brychan." He said sagely, even as he tossed his head again, starting to get caught up in the thrill of Anlach. "But I understand this enthusiasm of yours. Anlach is a natural thing. Perhaps only strange stags don't enjoy it." He added with a wry smile, obviously meaning himself.

"I wouldn't dream of it, my lord" he replied" grinning despite himself. He was never one to underestimate his opponent... even some of the young bucks could put up a brave fight if they wanted/needed to.

"Indeed... I have been wondering why you've chosen to sit out this Anlach. Perhaps you were overwhelmed with calves last year?" this bringing another chuckle from the dark colored Outrider.

"Oh, I wish," He said with a smile. "Last Anlach, young Artair had yet to grow out of his mother's care. Dyani had twins, which of course led to her having to care for four fawns at the same time. I'm sure Drystan and Tegwen have grown by now, though."

"Still, no desire for fawns and calves this year?" Brychan asked, wondering himself if he would actually end up being a father this year. It depended on how receptive the hinds were, and of course... a bit of luck.

"It's not so much the youngsters, it's all the fighting." Fell shrugged, despite the rigors of the collisions of their antlers.

Edit: If they somehow end up with the same stats, we could just do another roll, 1-5. A 'luck' factor, I guess xD

And good luck. It's quite close. Brychan has a good chance x3))

"The fighting?" Brychan asked clearly perplexed. He of course, didn't have that much of a problem with all the 'fighting'. "It is a part of the Herla and Herne's way... stags have been fighting since the days of Starbuck. Besides... there are rarely ever any serious injuries. You had to fight to become Lord after all."

((Good fight, though. It was really close xD

But did you SEE that stupid endurance roll? xD -points shaking finger at the 1- I hate you Fell.

Fell: But-but-but... THAT WAS LUCK! gonk ))

"That is true," Fell agreed. "But I suppose at some point in life, you have to pause to wonder why." The brown stag feinted to the left and doubled back to clash his antlers with Brychan's. "And of course everyone has their off days." He added, disengaging himself from the brief, but trying fight. He bowed his head to acknowledge his opponent. Yes, Brychan was a tremendously skilled fighter. He'd have to think about that promotion some day...

(( It was close. X3 Slightly disappointing for my end, but there's always next Anlach. xd Hopefully he'll be a Captain by then. 3nodding *patpats* Yeah that endurance roll sucked. Then came my piddly intelligence. XD Brychan is feeling stupid today I guess. rofl ))

"Why? Perhaps... although it is for the good of the herd." He didn't really know exactly why... although it did create genetic diversity in the herd and allowed the strongest calves possible to be born, but deer didn't think of such things.

Brychan stepped back as Fell's antlers retreated, only to watch as he unexpectedly came at him from an angle he didn't anticipate. The stag staggered as antlers locked once more. "Perhaps today is one of my 'off' days" he muttered lightly. Fell Lore was indeed a strong stag, he had expected such. He put up a brave fight.

Brychan pushed back against the other's antlers before disengaging and stepping back. "I concede defeat.. it appears I'm not quite ready." The other stag was just too strong for him, that was apparent and there was no need to continue the fight to exhaustion.

Fell bowed his head again slightly. "Experience is life's greatest teacher," He smiled that little smile again. "And there's always next Anlach." He added with a chuckle. Some day, he would have to have a good talk with Brychan. Who knew, perhaps he would be a wonderful conversationalist. The Lord stood proudly, although inside he felt as if he might collapse at any minute. Any fight was hard on any stag, but one who had not slept well for days - much thanks to the never-abating sounds of Anlach - often took it worse than others. He would never show it though, for he was a stag after all, and no stag likes to seem weak in any way.

There was a bit of disappointment in his eyes. His hinds had been so supportive of his ideas to challenge Fell Lore.. even defended him against that whipper snapper, Waoki, who had doubted him. It seems that the young Corps' doubts had won this time along with Fell Lore. But he would be gracious over the defeat and not let it drag him down. It was a learning point, he atleast got a feel for the Lord's strengths and weaknesses, and how he needed to improve himself. "Very true.. very true."

Brychan dipped his head humbly to the other stag, acknowledging Fell Lore's dominance over him. The starry pelted stag was indeed winded, but his resolve and endurance held up well today. "You have won Herne's favor for another year."

"So it seems I have." His voice was filled with something related to gratitude for the great god, and there was nothing that would suggest he felt at all triumphant or arrogant because of what he had just done. The light of battle had faded from his fierce amber eye, and for a moment, thoughts of all his new Outriders and Corps bucks came to mind. And then all the whisperings about his lack of participation in Anlach. Maybe, just maybe, next year would be different.
