It's almost time for another trip to the local library, and I realized that I've never read any Westerns. Now seems as good a time as any to start. Do any of you have any suggestions as to which books in the genre might be good to start out with?

I know of one that is sort of a Western, but it's hard to tell. It's called Riding Freedom and it's about a girl whose parents are killed when she's really young. She gets sent to an orphanage, where she is never allowed to be considered for adoption because the kitchen lady wants her for an assistant. She runs away after her best friend is adopted, her favorite horse dies, and she is banned from the orphanage stable. It is short, but really good. The girl actually lived, so it's really cool to hear about her.
Or you can just go look up "westerns" in the library catalogue.

I ended up getting a few recommendations from one of my coworkers, and am just about finished with Lonesome Dove, by Larry McMurtry. I'm unsure of how well the movie follows the novel, having never seen said movie, but the book has turned out to be an enjoyable read. I was hooked by the end of the first chapter, and nearly all of the characters are likable in some way. Those that aren't likable, well.. they get what's coming to them.
Next up is Streets of Laredo. I'm looking forward to it.
