Helaku was a father.
He still found it hard to believe sometimes, half expecting to wake up with the baskets gone and Olathe still doubting herself. And yet each morning, they were there. Each day, he kept careful watch over one of the baskets, even should he range far in grazing.
Like today, actually. He was hoping to perhaps run into a new face, or an old friend. Either way, as long as it wasn't a skinwalker or one of the more vicious kalona he was glad for the company.

Cadaver had started wandering on his own again after a few days of solitude. Alora was gone, no where to be found. Though he had heard whispers of a mare who had been going on a violent rampage across the land. If it was her, he knew eventually she might end up dead from some chivalrous hero stallion for her acts. Or even hunted down by the two leggers.
It seemed not to matter now. She would possibly not return. Who knew. But for now their plans were shot and it left him in a foul mood.
Meandering along, Cadaver stumbled upon a small stream that was nearby Helaku's little hidey place. But he didn't notice, nor did he really care.

The scent of a stranger wafted into Helaku's nostrils, and he flicked his ears forward. It seemed today's search of new company would not be fruitless, and he was glad of it. He hoped to at least make contacts of his own, if not find suitable mentors to the foal inside the basket he guarded.
"Hello there," he called out quietly, his posture relaxed but alert. He didn't want to look suspicious or dangerous, but his run-in with Rahu long ago had taught him that not all Soquili were sweet or pleasant.

The dark stallion had reached the edge of the small stream and lowered his head about to take a drink when a voice rang out of the darkness. Lifting his head swiftly, he turned an ear then a single white eye towards the voice. A large, glowing mass appeared in the darkness of his world. The voice was masculine which gave Cadaver the notion that this was no mare. At least that was of some comfort.
Turning his large body around, he eyed this new Soquili carefully before bending his head down slightly to where his chin nearly touched his chest. "Hello..." His voice was strong, but still had that hint of irritation to it.

Something in the stranger's tone reminded Helaku of his encounters with Chaos, long ago. Those encounters had been interesting, to say the least. This one seemed about to prove the same, as the stranger turned what initially appeared to be a blind eye on him. Yet...Helaku got the feeling that he was seen, if not in the sense that most Soquili would understand. "I hope that your day is proving, if not good, at least survivable," he continued by way of greeting. "My name is Helaku."

A small sigh and a flick of the tail. His days weren't in the least livable at least. The haze that seemed to cloud his mind was still thick and weighted heavy on his shoulders. "It's...bareable I guess." Turning his body more to eye the stallion, he nodded his head slightly. "My name is Cadaver..."

"Cadaver...an interesting name to be sure. Does it have a particular meaning?" Helaku tilted his head curiously. Having grown in the Soquili lands, he hadn't the faintest idea what a 'cadaver' was, other than the name of this Soquili. He avoided asking what was the matter, at least for now.

The dark stallion gave a short and breath laugh as Helaku asked him what his name meant. Giving him a dead on stare, a small smirk curled the corners of his mouth. "It's another word....for a dead body..." A single white eyebrow raised as he waited for the stallions reaction.

"Interesting...I hadn't heard it used before." Helaku listened with calm curiosity, golden eyes thoughtful. He'd seen the wreckage the skinwalkers had created in the Kawani village, a bit of morbid speech wouldn't faze him. Now, actually seeing a corpse, or getting into details of morbidity, would unsettle...but a sideways glance, that didn't bother him. "Did you choose it for yourself, or was it given?"

"Not many have..." Cadaver adjusted the weight of his body on his legs. Ears perked at the stallions next question. "I'm not sure. It's always been my name for as long as I can remember. At least part of my name anyway."

"I see." Helaku didn't quite understand, really, but surely it was possible to be around long enough to forget such things. And some could forget their past, it was said, sometimes through a blow to the head or another such shock. The basket rustled slightly, causing the stallion to dip his head for a moment as he nuzzled it into quietude before looking up again. "I've never seen eyes like yours...yet I don't quite think you're blind. You seem to know where I'm at well enough."

"You're right. I'm not completly blind unlike some other unfortunates." His attention went to the rustling basket for a second, curious as to what exactly it was. Cadaver wasn't one to hang around those with children so a basket would be unfamiliar to him. Eyeing Helaku again, he tilted his head slightly. "I see things others can't I suppose."

"Interesting...an unusual ability, but no stranger than healing or flight one would think. Perhaps rarer, but certainly more benign than that of the skinwalkers." Helaku's nostrils flared at the thought of those cursed creatures, and he shook his head. "Or at least...more neutral."
