I'm using the book Genki I and it says that the big numbers are basically just the sum of smaller numbers. I'm not sure if I understand. Does that mean the number 234,567 would be said nijuusanmanyonsengohyakurokujuunana? eek Thats really long..

Yes. But looks shorter in kana, shorter in kanji, and shorter in arabic numbers. However, saying it is easy and not that long.
