User ImageThe early golden rays of the sun poured down on the forest like a shower of lucky leprechaun coins. At least, that’s how it was for one wolf. The navy male made his way slowly out of the clearing and into a more hidden locale. His ears constantly twitched to and fro, listening for sounds of unwelcome visitors. His nose was no use to him at the moment. This was because Alexander clutched the neck of a doe between his powerful jaws and his nose was buried in the scent of fresh meat. The adolescent tugged and pulled the female deer, leaving a trail of drag marks behind as his legs slid across the forest floor. Finally, he was satisfied with his surroundings, and promptly dropped the meal at his paws.

Alexander mused at how lucky he had been this morning. The early wolf catches the deer, you know. He grinned wolfishly, thoughtlessly wagging a grey-tipped tail. He had gone hunting earlier than usual, which was how he snagged this fine catch. Alexander was feeling cocky when he stumbled on a small herd of delicious deer. Though he stalked cautiously, the male had accidentally snapped a twig, which sent his prey running. The unlucky lady before him got caught in a snag of underbrush and had broken one of her delicate legs, rendering her helpless against the large teen.

Licking his lips, Alexander circled his catch. He silently thanked the forest for providing him with this meal. Though still young, Alexander was taught as a pup to respect his surroundings. And just look at what it had provided him this time!

He slowly knelt down next to the sensitive stomach skin of the doe, and sunk his teeth into a wonderful, and lucky, breakfast.

Caleb had long since eaten his fill and the sturdy male was never one to kill without good reason to and was never one to eat for the very sake of eating. To do such would be a grave crime against all of nature and the lone would not account for it. So when the coppery scent of freshly spilt blood reached his nostrils the mossy wolf wrinkled his snout. Blood on an full stomach sure was a foul smelling thing. So Caleb thought it best to just let bygones by bygones and keep to his own business. But then another one of his senses were assualted. Clear stomping of hooves. Why hadn't he heard it earlier?

Ah it was because his mind was clouded with other smells and senses. But by the sounds of it, the deers were running from something. Curiously he wanted to see the cause of their fear, so he crept onward throgh the woods until he saw a teen eating his meal. A teen? chuckling to himself and stepped out to make his appearance known.

Alexander reveled in the delicious tastes touching his tongue. He was so tired of fish! Usually he needed help to take down such large and tasty prey, but today was different! Alexander wondered where Deimos was this particular morning, as they often worked together to bring down larger prey. Alexander, good a hunter as he was, could really only take down small things like rabbits or the occasional turkey by himself. Mice had become too small a meal for his adolescent body and fish could be very frustrating to snag.

The young wolf was just finishing chomping down the doe’s stomach when he sensed someone approaching. Hackles and tail immediately rose in a defensive warning to the intruder; however he did not look up from his meal. After a couple moments of not being attacked, Alexander turned and looked at the golden wolf approaching him. Being a very large wolf, even in his adolescent age Alexander was as large as a small to medium sized adult female. He cocked his head at the newcomer and turned around the carcass to face him, causing the deer to be between the two of them.

The blue male’s features smoothed, yet he stood tall with tail still curled over his back. Surprisingly, his voice was very kind. “Want some?” Alexander offered. “There’s plenty to share with a fellow wolf.”

At the offer Caleb immediately let a warm smile slip to his maw. As a constant wanderer he wasn't stupid enough to think that most wolves were like him. Caring and compassionate, and having no need to pick a bone with anyone unless directly threatened. So he knew that most wolves were instantly on the defensive. Though he usually wasn't he knew to be careful when approaching another. Seeing someone like this navy teen brought a smile to his face. There were too few of those like himself in this world.

"That is a very kind gesture, but I've already eaten," he said bowing his head in thanks. "I'll let you eat your fill, but I was only curious about the running deers. I'm assuming you were the source of their trepidations?"

Alexander watched the other, deciding this wolf was probably alone, and was probably male. He mirrored the other’s moves, and nodded as well, signaling that he understood. The navy male allowed his tail to wag a few times, silently saying he was glad to have a kind companion around. Alexander was always more comfortable in the presence of other wolves. Which is one reason why he was trying to get his own pack started.

Continuing with his meal, Alexander leaned down and took a few more bites until the liver of the doe was exposed. Strangely, he plucked that piece out of the carcass and set it aside. Looking up, Alexander said plainly, “When I was little, another wolf told me to respect the river. And also that the river likes liver and if I give it up, the river will save my life one day.” He leaned down and took a few more bites. His ears flicked up in the direction of the golden lone when he realized how strange that sounded. “I don’t know if it’s true, but there’s nothing to lose by doing it, right?”

Licking his lips and cleaning his teeth, Alexander planted his haunches on the earth. Blue eyes stared ahead, one ear fixed on the other and one swiveling about for other life forms. Alexander always tried to be on guard. “Yes, that was me,” he started, replying to the other male. “I found a small herd and startled them. This one got caught and hurt her leg,” he stated, turning for a moment to gaze at the deer. Switching back to the wolf, Alexander’s face changed to a look of concentration. “Sorry…? What was your name?”

Caleb chuckled at the story, having never heard it before. He wouldn't go as far as to say that it was a strange story. All stories were strange in their own way. And he wouldn't say that it was wrong either. For who could really say what was wrong or right when there were so many different takes on things. So he nodded his head in reply.

"That's the way I would look at it. If you are wrong you loose but a liver, but if you are right, well you gain your life," Caleb said casually, but wisely. "I see which outweighs which."

"Ah I assumed as much. Well I suppose lady luck has smiled on you today. Normally it takes me skill and wit to take down a deer of this size, but you've done it on chance alone." Caleb chuckled again at that thought. This was certainly shaping up to be an amusing day. "My name is Caleb. What may I call you?"

The navy wolf listening to the voice of his companion and smiled. This wolf was so non-threatening... He liked it. Yet, this wolf seemed like he could hold his own if needed. That's what Alexander liked. He wagged his tail some more before turning his attention back to the doe. Alexander nibbled on a chunk of meat, figuring he should eat his fill. It was impossible to know when he'd eat again. Though, he supposed he could bury an unfinished portion and return to it later.

He decided he was finished eating and looked back up to the other wolf. "I usually have a friend help me to do this kind of hunting, but I just happened to stumble on this one today," Alexander said. He reached a hind leg up to absentmindedly scratch his ear before continuing. "I'm Alexander. Nice to meet'cha." He greeted with a nod.

"It is nice to meet you as well," Caleb said wearing the same warm smile accross his maw. "Yes, a friend is indeed a good thing to have....but for one such as myself," he sighed and let a light shrug grace his lithe shoulders, "I am not blessed with kinship. As I'm sure you've dulely noted, I travel alone."

Alexander frowned upon hearing this. No one should be without a single friend. Well, if nothing else, the adolescent thought Caleb should at least have him for a friend. The blue wolf sauntered over to the other male and promptly nuzzled his muzzle. “Friends are important. I hate being alone. That’s how it used to be except when I was very little.” The young wolf talked as if he was an adult already. The only difference was a little extra teen spunk and a touch of carelessness he would eventually grow out of.

After that serious bit, Alexander fell quickly into a play bow, nipping at the air. He hoped this wolf liked to play. One can never grow too old to have fun, Alexander thought. “I’ll be your friend, Caleb,” the wolf said simply. And that was that in Alexander’s mind.

Caleb smiled casually at the nuzzle. He had only had contact with one other wolf since his parents died when he was but a teen. So any kind of interaction was good in his mind. He laughed heartily and jumped up at the nipping at the air.

"Then friends we shall be!" he said happily as she rolled around to playfully n** at this new friend's flank. At heart Caleb was still like a pup, playful, passive, and eager to explore the world around him. He could also hold his own if need be, but that was the last alternative. He did note how adult like and wise this teen was. It was great qualities of a leader and Caleb wouldn't be surprised with this young one grew up to head his own pack.

Alexander let a puppy-like yip escape his mouth at Caleb’s play-attack. He hopped up quickly to dodge, turning in the air to try to face his new friend. With a grin painted across his young face, Alexander lunged back into the golden wolf, lightly mouthing one of his legs. The adolescent couldn’t help his tail wagging playfully.

“I want to have a lot of wolves around,” Alexander announced, letting go of his friend’s leg. His tongue hung out as he panted lightly. He wasn’t sure if he should share why he wanted lots of others, and supposed he should save it for later. Instead, he asked, “What do you do for fun?”

Caleb chuckled as he frolicked and participated in what was mere pups play. When maw met his skin he countered by jumping in the air or swinging a play attack of his own. n** here, nibble there, and by the end he was breathless, panting too just like his new friend.

"For fun?" he said happily, while his tail wagged behind him, "well there isn't much to do with only yourself around. But I like to explore, follow the squirrels and other animals, that sort of thing."

Explore… that sounded like great fun! Alexander loved the idea. He didn’t do much exploring to actually investigate, but rather, he searched for something to satisfy boredom or hunger. Maybe Caleb could show him how to explore his way? The young wolf grinned at the thought as well as wagging his navy tail. Taking a seat, he reached a black hind leg up to scratch at his neck. “That sounds like lots of fun,” Alexander finally added. “Maybe we could go exploring sometime? I need to keep up with you…”

Wait. There’s an idea. Deimos and him had decided they wanted to start a small group of wolves right? Loners coming together to help each other out and keep each other company. He wondered how Caleb felt about this idea. Alexander’s ears flicked forward for a second, locking onto the lighter wolf. His right ear soon disbanded, continually checking surroundings for danger, but his left stayed fixated.

“Have you ever thought about joining a pack?” The adolescent asked, seeming random.

"That sounds like great fun," he said nodding his head. He had never taught another wolf before, never had any need. But secretly he always wanted a family, ssons or a brother to call his own. Without having another soul he sure did feel lonely at times. "I could teach you to keep up," he countered, smile evident on his maw.

"A pack," he mused for a moment. "I have actually....several times. Most packs are too keen on expecting someone who likes the world at his paws though. I'm a wondering spirit, I don't know if a pack would accept that.."

Alexander's tail sped to and fro in a burst of happiness. Caleb would go exploring with him! Yay! He made sure to memorize the other wolf's scent for tracking purposes. Just in case he needed some fun when no one was around. The younger male feigned a glare in the older's direction at that second comment. Of course he could keep up!

Yes, he knew Caleb's spirit liked to be free, because of the exploring he did. However, that was perfect for the pack Alexander wanted. He grinned, tail slowing back down and eventually becoming stationary. Alexander pricked his ears and tried to look important.

"A wandering spirit would fit perfectly in the pack I'm starting," Alexander proclaimed, hoping the other would be interested. "You'd be welcome to join, and you would be our first member." The adolescent paused to gather his thoughts before continuing. "I don't like to sit in one place for long, so it won't be a... normal pack."
