Japan Hospital Plans Baby Hatch. The basic gist of it is that a Japanese hospital is planning to install a chute that for women to drop their baby's into if they don't want them; The chute delivers the babies to an incubator bed and alarms the hospital staff so that the baby can be taken care of.

Some guy thought this up as a way to lower the high abortion rate in Japan.

...It's so ridiculous sounding that it must be true! Plus it was reported by the BBC.

What do you think?

I was just thinking of the batman music playing while the baby is going down the chute.

A baby "chute"?

I like the idea of mothers that don't want their kiddies handing them over to people who will take care of them, but ...

A chute?

Rofl, Kaiser. xD

Is it possible for home installation? Because I'd absolutely love it if I could put one in my house. Kid won't shut up? Send it to bed immediately.

Seriously though, I had trouble believing it was serious at first and thought the BBC had messed up. That's so weird. How is this going to be any difference then women, you know, just leaving their babies in the care of the hospital after birth? Because every child should experience at least one fun outing at the park with his or her mother (a slide counts)?

Kaiser's comment just made me laugh. Yay!

XD lol, I think that the idea is to make it completely anonymous. And I'm guessing that it isn't a very long chute, and that it's padded or something. No more damaging than, say, rolling your kid along the floor! whee

i think this is a good idea as long as, you know, the kid isn't hurt. and i can totally agree with the music in the back round. na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na Batman!

With newborns, that can still be very damaging. What would keep it anonymous without potential harm?

Have a manned room with a closed door and a window. Knock. Slide the window open and hand the baby through to the waiting hospital staff. Have the window be below face level.

Yeah, that's true. I do think that that would be a better method, but it requires the mother to stand in one place to long. The longer they have to wait, the more nervous they might get about being seen. It's easier to just put the baby in the bin, as awful as it sounds, than to stand there, wait for someone to get the door, and hand it through.

Baby Bolling! scream

#1, it's not a chute. Sorry to disappoint. The babies, I mean. No fun slide for you, just straight to bed.

#2, I wouldn't want this opening to an outside wall. Certainly not one in view of everyone. Maybe in a discreet corner of the hospital, where the woman wouldn't be seen?Making it inside the hospital seem less suspicious too--lots of women would be dropping their babies off for a procedure, surgery or something they couldn't be present for, then leaving.

Oh, but they still need abortion, because being pregnant is the worst torture there is. Why do female prisoners of war get beaten and shocked when the worst thing you could do to one is give her an unwanted pregnancy with no access to abortion? rolleyes

The chute thing is a little funky, but I like the idea.
