Okay so this is my first pregnancy that did not terminate before 5 weeks. My doctor drew bllod today for the Maternal Serum Alpha-Fetoprotein Screening. Is there anything I need to worry about.

I am 28 years old, and have PCOS. No one in my family has ever had a borth defect. And neither has anyone in my boyfriend's family. But my doctor has me scared.

I would not sweat this at all. Even if you do test positive it does not necessarily mean anything is wrong. Less than 5 out of every 100 women who test positive are carrying a baby with a neural tube defect. I didn't get this done because of the high rate of false positives, but here is an article my midwife gave me on the test:

I hope this helps! Don't let the doctors get you worried! heart

You shouldnt get too worked up about it right away. When I was pregnant with my son Tristan I had an ultrasound and the lady whom did the ultrasound came to the conclusion that my son would most likely be born with a defect due to the size of his kidneys. Apparently they were smaller than the average size. They booked an appointment for me to go get a second opinion from more qualified people. But from the time they told me that to the time I had this other appointment I was a mess and I became very depressed. But when I went for the second opinion they told me that they could not see anything being wrong and my son ended up being born perfectly healthy. So don't worry too much....as in my case you could be worrying for no reason. But if your really concerned I would say talk to your obstetrician (sp?) about it. You dont want to stress yourself at a time like this.

Maura, I know it is hard not to worry when you have so much coming at you at once but do try not to worry until you know what is going on. I was 28 when I had my daughter, she was my first child and I remember how worried I was about my age (just being near 30 labels you as possible high risk). I was especially worried about the Alpha protein test AND I was one of the high percentage of women who ended up with a false positive reading. Basically they called and told me that Alexis (well we didn;t know who she was at that point but...) had tested positive for downs syndrom and they needed to run further tests. Talk about freaked out! My hubby ended up talking with a co-worker of his who's daughter was a neo-natal nurse and she explained the very high percentages of false positive readings for this particular test....this eased my mind a bit but it wasn't until they did further testing and confirmed that it was a false reading that I felt I could stop fearing the worst. Anyway, my point is to try not to worry too much even if you end up with a positive reading because the test itself is highly unreliable. Keep us posted and congrats on your little bun! biggrin
