In the city of Xuan, there are many different kinds of entertainment. One may wander its lovely, upscale districts and visit its exotic marketplaces. For those who like a little danger, there is always the required "Black Market" area of the city, where one may find some underground activities. Just be careful of the people who might knife you for no reason other than for looking at them funny.
Or perhaps you're the kind that likes to get out and have a bit of alcohol for fun? Well, there's always the extravagant parties that the nobility/politicians hold on occasion...but for the everyday fun? You've happened upon the right place.
Set in the "South Side" district of Xuan, this newly restored, refurbished, and never needing to restock building bears a typical tavern-style sign hanging above its door. The banner itself is a sight to see, if one would ignore the strange name long enough to study it. The frame seems to be made of metal, with stained-glass pieces filling in the open spaces. There might be some sort of creature next to the words...a bird of some kind? Anyway, the glass is patterned with purples and blues...and, if neon lights existed, probably would have been the type to spring to glowing life at night.
The actual building sits on the corner crossing of two streets, and the outer decor actually blends well with the other shops and buildings that surround it. As do the colors - neutral tones of brown, white, and hints of black to accent the windows and roof tiling. Just the sign seems to be strange. Oh, and the iron-bar reinforced wooden gate around the side of the building is a little odd, too, but there's a reason for it.
Want to mosey on inside? Well then, welcome, and please, come on in and enjoy your stay at The Charming Penguin. Bar/Taven authorized by BlackPidgeot.

[Rules - Gotta Have 'Em] Any and all rules are subject to change and addition without warning. Please make sure to check on them from time to time for changes.
General Rules 1] Obey all Gryps Nemorensis Shop rules in this roleplay thread. 2] No drama or generic mindless whining. (IC drama-angst is welcome, of course.) 3] This thread is open to anyone who wishes to RP - it has no set plotline. 4] However, please observe that general IC roleplaying rules apply here - please no *asterisk* stuff. 5] Use something to indicate OOC chatting, but please don't talk excessively OOC. 6] I will not be monitoring everything - multiple RPs may occur at the same time, but it's the job of the RPers to keep track.
In-Character Rules 1] Many of Shane's bar regulations/expected customer behavior will be listed below. Follow them. 2] Griffins are to be left outside, around the back in the garden. 3] Fights are allowed inside the building, but please keep property destruction to a minimum. Talk to me via PM if you DO want to have a property-destructive brawl, and we can negotiate. 4] Do not kill or permanently maim each other's characters without consulting each other first. Also, take character deaths outside, if you must have a character death. 5] Please do not have a character 'employed' at the bar, unless you have consulted me and I have allowed it. 6] The title of calling your character a 'bar regular' must be earned through roleplay. Have your character come around at least five times before they start calling themselves one. 7] Always have your character talk to Shane if you want to rent a room upstairs, or start a round of cards. 8] Doing underground business with Shane is currently unavailable. 9] Because I must have this rule - try and keep things relatively PG13. 10] Keep in mind that most people in Xuan will not know what a penguin is (straight order from Black, after I asked her about it).

[Within the Penguin]Shane's rules and the setting inside the bar Once inside, one might be slightly confused at the stark contrast of the inside of the building to the relatively normal outer appearance. Oh, it does have its standard bar-type items. Upon walking into the main floor of the building, one would observe a long bar counter adorning the back wall and part of the far side, complete with tall shelves full of beverages and strategically place bar stools. A few large, round tables stand in the middle of the floor, with several smaller booths pushed up against the walls. Then, there are two customer-accessible doors to be walked through, one leading outside to the garden, and the other leading to some private rooms for certain partitioners of certain activities. The third door hides in the corner behind the main counter, accessible only by bar employees. Now, the Penguin could be a very typical bar, if it weren't for the fact that the paint job inside looks as though someone just took up a few buckets of silvery white, and started running around in circles with their arms aflailing. Splotches, splashes, streaks, and, on the floor, what looks like talon and paw prints, create a rather outrageous contrast to the very dark walls and floor of the room...and yet there is something deviously charming about the casually wild style. Add in the oddity of every single piece of furniture being varying shades of deep red, and you have the interior of the Charming Penguin bar. Need a reference for the floor layout? Look here! And now, ladies and gentlemen, a few rules from the proprietor of the Penguin, Shane Tespia 1] Griffins in the garden, please. Don't worry, the big guy out there will take good care of them. If he can wake up long enough. 2] Keep the midgets out of here! And by midgets, I mean children, and other persons not of the drinking age. 3] I'm single, and happy that way. Okay? Okay. 4] Looking is not a crime, though. 5] I can make anything and everything you want. Just ask. If I don't know how, I'll figure it out. 6] No discounts unless I like you lots. 7] Annoy/injure any of my workers, and you'll be in severe pain by tomorrow morning. 8] Do not ask what a penguin is, unless you intend to buy some alcohol first. 9] This establishment isn't held accountable if you lose something of yours. And we don't just mean jewelry, ladies. 10] I might add something here later~ <3

[Shane's Corner] Major Plot Developments, Working Logs, Etc Shane's Working Log First Thoughts Xuan City's soon-to-be finest bar/tavern/in! Plus, y'know, the best spot to come trade in the other little business I dally in. Though, this eye-sore of a crumbling building on the South Side is going to need a looot of work. But it's going to be amazing and wonderful and I can't wait to start! ...First things first, start raising money. I have a few mentionables I can sell to start off, and I should probably start asking around to see who wants a job. Hm.... Time to bother the Princelings~ Let the walls of institution fall! Steady as she goes, I'm gettin' money from my other job. Seems like my rarer products are a hit - they go for lots! Apparently this old building - my gold-mine in disguise - used to be some sort of government place, waaay back when Xuan was first established. Anarchy, anarchy! There's a lot of little rooms inside, both on the ground floor and upstairs. Getting some people to help knock out said walls on the main floor for table space, though we'll need to put up supports so the second story doesn't bring its wrath tumbling down upon us. The upper rooms should be good for one-night-stands. Gonna leave a few rooms up in the back for cards~ Painting With Feathers! Main floor is nice and cleared, working on refurbishing upstairs. Might actually consider living up there. It'd be pretty convenient! Got the floor, walls, ceiling painted a niiiice dark blackish color, though. And then I took a few buckets of whitish paint and ran around for a while with Zephan chasing me cause he was pissed off. Heheheh. Furniture should be arriving within a week! Only three months in, and I'm almost ready to open! Soooo exciting! And sister is moving into the city! I'll need to send some money for her in advance though. Damn greedy b*****d never lets her go anywhere without money. Ah, well. Princeling thinks I've gone completely mad. Though he's probably always thought that. His little miss Egyptian, though, asked me about finding a date for a friend of hers. I told her to bring him 'round for the grand opening. Maybe Caddie will be here by then~

[Quick first opening post]
It was mid-afternoon, and the cool inside of the newly-revamped building - still smelling fabulous in all it's new shininess - was quiet. Not a soul was present...though that was expected, since the place wasn't even really open yet. A lone figure stood behind the main counter, scanning the shelves with a look of deep consideration reflecting in her violet-blue eyes.
....The shelves needed more whiskey. From her experience, whiskey was favored among the city's people who could afford it.
Other than that, everything was in order for the grand opening later that night. Even the garden out back was ready, Zephan having courteously agreed to share his new space with other griffins.
Now if only she had some employees. Then she really would be ready.

“…what’s a pen-goo-in?” Mal asked as he studied the banner proclaiming the building to be ‘The Charming Penguin’. He wasn’t the only one with this question apparently. In fact, that seemed to be the first thing to enter anyone’s mind when they saw this building. Well, besides the age-old question of, ‘is there booze here’, that is. Mal had already decided that the answer to that question was an all-resounding ‘yes’. Normally, if there was booze in the building, Mal wouldn’t be outside of it, but he felt this question warranted a moment’s speculation. The dark-haired Cambrian scratched his head, still looking over the banner as if it was the most fascinating thing in the world. Malcolm Lansing was always ready to investigate things like this.
That and he was darkly suspicious of his current companion, Remiel Quillan. Not just because the blonde noble had been stalking him for several weeks before now (Mal had gotten over that, mostly), but because he was acting sort of suspicious. For one thing, he was out here at a bar with Mal. Rem didn’t drink. That was one of the things that Mal remembered very securely about Rem. For another, he was encouraging Mal to come along. After their rather awkward reunion during that little shindig not too long ago, their meetings had been brief and mostly staged at Rem’s place. Oh, and mostly centered around Tali, the baby gryphon that Mal had given to Rem as a gift.
Everyone loved Tali. Which only added to the strangeness, actually, since Mal expected Rem to be in yet another ‘fight’ with Laura over who got to take care of the baby gryphon. Of course, while they were fighting, Leolin, Laura’s gryphon, would take care of little Tali, unless Aeron was there, in which case another fight would break out.
“I’m guessing that’s a penguin, Mal,” Rem said after a moment of thought with a slight shrug. He pointed at the picture of the strange bird on the banner. It made perfect sense to him. “Hurry up and go inside. It’s cold out here.”
“You’re from Paralene. ‘S colder up North,” Mal said a tad suspiciously. Something was definitely up and Rem’s odd behavior was starting to get to the paranoid Cambrian. He wasn’t sure what was going on, but something was very wrong.
“Maybe I’m getting used to the warm weather here. Now come on. It’s grand-opening and I know you don’t want to miss the grand-opening of a new booze-hall.” In fact, Rem knew the truth; Mal was here for a surprise date that Iris had set up. Rem’s only job here was to get Mal to the bar safely.
“’S not open yet,” Mal pointed out, now feeling even more suspicious than ever. His gray eyes shifted slightly, wondering if there was a good way to escape before Rem sprung whatever trap he had. Maybe it was paranoia, and maybe it wasn’t, but he couldn’t ignore the fact that there were several strange things happening without precedent.

Iris hummed lightly to herself as she strolled down the streets of Xuan. For once, she had all three griffins in tow - Ma'at, Elrok, and Sekhmet. It earned her some glances - not that she ever minded - but the city was starting to get more and more used to the sight of such large creatures. Indeed, they were becoming more and more numerous. That made shopping for her pets all the easier..and more fun!
She had not gone out just to shop, however. Deste's friend Shane had reportedly come through on Iris' request of a 'friend' for Mal to meet. Perfect timing, too. The woman was beginning to worry, before the fascinatingly energetic Shane showed up at her doorstep with the news..and the request to tinker at Iris' private bar for a little while. Preparing for some future parties, the woman cited as her reason. Heh, the Nefretiri daughter had nooo problem with that. Shane was, in fact, the one who helped save her from that man at her last social outing.
Ok, so..Iris would have been to this grand opening regardless of whether Mal's engagement was tonight or not, as Deste apparently had to go, as Shane requested it. Deste was not to arrive until later, though...if he actually arrived at all. Iris figured she would be early.
The attractive woman in the black clothing (ok, so, her favorite button-up top dipped a little low...but nothing that went beyond the line of elegance! hell, she'd fasten one more button if it turned out to be a 'problem'), a circle of silver on her arm and three griffins flanking out to her sides and back, slowed as she caught sight of that amusing sign upon the turning of a corner. Well, there was Mal..and a man she had seen at that little party not too long ago, but never spoke to. He seemed to have some sort of connection to Mal, so why did her friend look so...stressed? Hmmm.
"Funny running into you here, gentlemen." she said cooly, striding up with a slightly-amused look in her eye. "Mal, you look as if you're about to bust."

For a moment, Mal wondered what Iris’ presence meant. Was it a good thing? Or was it merely a sign that everyone in Mal’s life was trying to gang up on him for some unknown reason possibly involving cabbage? “He’s planning something,” he said darkly, sending a suspicious glance at Rem.
Rem spread his hands wide in that universal gesture for ‘I’m not carrying a big deadly weapon’ with a rather perplexed look on his face. “I’m offering you a drink, Mal. That’s it.” Goddamnit, was he always this paranoid? Or was Rem really being that transparent about this entire thing?
“Not only that, but you’re in my presence without talkin’ about gryphons, which makes two things without precedence. Can’t blame me for bein’ skittish, Rem… oh, I’m sorry.” He seemed to suddenly recall his duty as the only person to know both of the people present. Turning to Iris, he offhandedly waved at Rem. “This is Remiel Quillan, an old friend of mine.” Sort of friend, anyway. Mal didn’t think there was an actual word for their relationship, but decided that ‘friend’ was close enough anyway. “Rem, this is Iris Nefretiri, another friend of mine.”
My, for someone so paranoid, he sure tossed the word ‘friend’ around a lot.
For a moment, Rem only stared at Mal in confusion, thinking about that exact same fact. Well, he supposed he deserved some of that suspicion… apparently giving up on understanding Mal’s mind for now, he sighed and turned his attention to Iris. He gave a brief bow---as he had always been taught to---and said, “A pleasure to meet you, Iris. No, his insanity isn’t a recent development; he’s always been that way.” He eyed the gryphons at Iris’ sides with a combination of wariness and interest. Like most people from the North, he hadn’t had much contact with the winged creatures.
Well, alright, there was Leolin. And Tali. And Aeron. Besides those three, Rem had been moreorless content to observe the beasts from a distance, especially after the situation at that shindig with the big black gryphon from Hell.

Felise Kayman walked ahead of Renarvos, green eyes watching the streets carefully. She was new to the city of Xuan, and had somehow wandered to the back streets. How had the others put it? Oh yes, the south side. She wasn't scared, she had a tall gryphon following her to protect her.
Long red hair had been tied into a simple braid, she wasn't trying to gather any attention. Her clothes said as much. She dressed rather casually and with and old-fashioned, almost costumed sense. It was simply most comfortable for her chosen profession.
Well ok, she wasn't a breeder yet.
But she was in training and that meant she still worked a lot with Gryphons. They weren't always shiny and smelling of coconut (She had never actually seen one, but it smelled good), someone had to do the dirty work... right now, that was her.
Spotting the sign of the newest looking building on the street she paused, causing the fox colored beast behind her to nudge her slightly, in curiosity. There were people gathered outside, the female had three gryphons following her.
You could find less obnoxious ways to flaunt how rich you are.
But who was Felise to judge? She herself had a full grown male, a chick and an egg in her bag, though she wasn't displaying her body in such a tasteless manner as the other female.
Ah, there she went again, judging.
She smiled and headed over to the group, carefully. She bent to pick up Bethany, the butter yellow chick before facing them, "Ah, excuse me, I'm sorry to interrupt, but is this tavern open?" She was hungry, and she needed to feed her chick.

Voices? What? Who?
...Well, it was about time for her 'delivery' to arrive...
As Shane was considering that possibility, two people came into view of the building. Well, really, there was one man who was adorned with the clothes of a wealthy person's servant - though the rapier at his waist said something more 'body-guard' ish - and the other person was so far wrapped in a cloak that the only discernible thing was that it was female. Judging by the figure, anyway...timid female.
The two swept right past the three gathered at the door of the bar, though it was more of a man-will-lead, woman-will follow sort of relationship. And probably a bit of a male-dominated relationship, considering the way the female tugged her outer garment even tighter as she slipped past the three. She risked a glance at the two men and other woman, though. It was quite early in the day, still, and there were people already gathering outside in hopes of a drink?
Well, actually...that woman had griffins with her. Though, what that could amount to, other than being an acquaintance with the proprietor of the Penguin. The woman had never seen one of the creatures up close before...they were certainly beautiful.
"'Ey! Get in 'ere!"
Turning back towards the man leading her, she dipped her head in quick apology, and hurried inside.
------
A knock at the door! "It's open!"
Turning around, Shane greeted a face she saw only on occasion - the less, the better, really...though he was the middle-man in getting this particular 'item' to her - with a short smile. The expression dropped momentarily when the man turned around to bark an order at his companion, proceeding to shove her into the building.
The cloaked girl stumbled in a few steps, but regained her balance with what the bartender could see as a practiced and fluid motion. My, this one was good at her theatrics...she even crossed over to the bar counter with an apprehensive timidness in her gait. "How much I owe ya?" she voiced to the delivery boy as the girl paused beside the counter.
"Eh, usual. Boss likes that new stuff, though."
"Ah, good, saves me the trouble of having to put it away." Shane said in that casual chit-chatty tone. Lifting a parcel out from underneath the counter, the woman shook it a few times to make sure it was the right one, and, satisfied with the clinking noises, tossed it to the messenger. He caught it deftly, and turned to go...but paused.
"Boss'll be in town inna few months. Be checkin' in."
"Oh, I'll make sure she does!" Shane answered, grinning and waving a hand as the man exited. Oh, and she could see the silhouettes of people outside...well, she was expecting more guests, after all.
"Hey."
"Hm?"
"Play along for a bit, 'kay?" she said, a mischievous glint entering her eyes.
The cloaked woman gave a light laugh, inclining her head at the request. The motion allowed a few strands of brilliant auburn hair to flow past the hood. "You know I always do!"
My, Shane did enjoy having like-minds surround her. Calling out to the group outside, her voice was a cheerful, "Hey, the lot of you can come on in! Free round for whoever wants it!"
Oooh but she hoped it was the person Iris was plotting against...

Iris raised a brow at their exchange. Her first question was - '...why are you with him if he's planning something? Something bad, apparently.'
She didn't ask that, though. Sure did want to!
Iris smiled and nodded in greeting to Rem. "Pleasure is all mine, Rem. And I know he is like this, it's ok...at least, to a degree." Her words were playful, but they had a slight bit of truth to them. While she hadn't really seen the part about his paranoia, she had watched him chase a griffin upon their first meeting. That gave her a bit of an insight. Oh, and then there was the shimmy down the balconies - heard about that one a few days after the Shindig....
...at any rate, these two seemed to be friends. The type that would pick at each other over things like this. She expected that it would continue, especially with...the friend she had waiting, and so, she decided to help. "So are you really just here for the drink, or are you actually planning something, Rem? I don't think Mal would mind. He needs a little excitement."
Oh, the can of worms she probably just opened.
The dark-skinned woman blinked as another woman approached. Reddish hair...a bag with a bulge, a cute little chick, and another full grown griffin. Well, the bar's area for griffins would get a good breaking-in tonight, that's for sure! In all honesty...Iris didn't exactly like bringing all three. One, maybe two, but three? That was rare. Of course, it was also rare that she had a certain red-and-white haired man obviously out for her, and in that respect, out for Deste. Daddy-dearest refused to allow her to leave her own house unless she had that much protection.
...she had a feeling he didn't quite grasp the scope of Abaddon's power. Her griffins could buy her a few minutes. If that.
And how the hell he thought it was his business to govern how much protection she had, she had no idea. Ah, the entertainment that was politics.
Anyway.
Iris smiled kindly, inclining her head t'wards the bar. "At the moment, it is not...but it will be opening later this afternoon. You are welcome to join us in waiting, if you would like?" she said, watching Elrok move his head a little to get a better view of the chick. Heh, cute little thing, she was.
....Iris blinked, yet again, as two people suddenly rushed passed Rem, and Mal, and their new friend..and Iris herself. O...k?
Then, the man left.
"The lot of you can come in!"
..she didn't even bother. Shaking her head lightly, she smiled again. "Well, I guess the wait's over. Shall we?"
