And then the sun peeked over the horizon. The night had been long, but shorter than those that had come before it. The air was cool but not overly chill, for this was the valley of D'ob and frost seldom if ever reached the lush land.
Across the rich green carpet moved a small figure, its body as dark a blue as the sky had been some minutes ago. A curly white tail twitched as the stallion lowered his head to nibble at the grass. He had not been awake for very long and some sleep stiffness remained in his limbs. The Bae gave himself a shake which helped with the minor aches before bending his neck once more.
It had been several days since he’d last been pressed to speak to another of his kind so far as he could recall. Not that he didn't like other Nequus but they could be so... so loud. He never had enough words to respond to them with and was well aware of how he seemed to most that he met.
Cold as the departing winter, aloof as the proudest of Ichsa and as indifferent as stone. The stallion sighed to himself; it was a vicious circle. He was terrible at conversation so he avoided it and never improved. Yet the knowledge of this wasn't enough to make him seek out others. Something somewhere at the back of his mind always reminded him what a dangerous place the world was and how much the danger increased when there were other Nequus involved.
It was better to keep to himself even if it was lonely. If somebody else were to approach him then he would try for the sake of whatever fate had brought them to him but that was as far as the winter-coloured creature was willing to go.

The red cream colored mare stood upon the top of a hill and eagerly watched the horizon as the sun lazily made its ascent into the morning sky. Sunrises and sunsets were two of her favorite things, and lately she'd gotten into the habit of awaking early in the morning just to watch the first occasion. After a week or so she'd make a habit of waking later so she could see the sunset.
Her bright green eyes then scanned the landscape after the sun had gotten to a certain point, looking for anything interesting. Maybe someone to play with, or some butterflies to follow. However, her eyes rested on a dark shape a little ways off. Her ears perked and she danced in place - another nequus! Oh, it was such fun talking with others. She unfolded her wings, stretching them out to rid them of their sleepy feelings, then folded them back against her sides. She stretched out each leg in turn, not wanting to injure her still tired body, then began a slow canter down the side of the hill towards the dark coated creature. It wasn't too far off, she decided; it would only take a few moments to reach it, whatever it was. She stretched out her wings again, then jumped into the air as she neared the bottom of the hill. With a few beats of her tendril wings she was up in the air, kicking at the tops of the trees with her hooves and heading towards the creature. By now she could tell by its butterfly-shaped wings that it was a bae, but she couldn't tell its gender quite yet.
She picked a path between two trees, beginning a quick descent towards the ground. She flexed the muscles in her legs, preparing herself for impact, and angled her wings downwards. She swooped down low over the ground, cautiously touching down upon the ground at a fast canter. She stretched her wings a bit and folded them against her sides, continuing her canter, but didn't slow until she got closer to the bae. She stopped a few yards from it, still not knowing its gender quite yet, but it didn't matter much to the energetic mare. "Hello there! What's your name? My name's Nizhoni, but everyone else just calls me Niz. What are you doing over here all by yourself?"

The dark-coated stallion started up from feeding and spun about to face the maker of the sound of voice and hooves. He stared a moment. She was slim, beautiful and threatening with her long sharp horn. An Ichsa, warrior maid perhaps with a love of life and all than lived from her cheerful tones. Nizhoni. A beautiful name, too, to go with her shining emerald eyes and wondrous form.
"Virgil."
Had he spoken to her, replied to her light superb voice with his own mundane tones?
"I was grazing..." Oh dear, now he looked a total fool. She was so tall and so slender and... Oh dear. Oh dear she'd want to speak with him. What would he say? "A beautiful morning, isn't it?" Oh dear. He'd stated the obvious. Oh dear. Her horn really was very long.

"Virgil? That's a really nice name!" She said with a nod, flicking her curly tail. "Oh yes, it's an exceptional morning. I love getting up early to watch the sunrise. I lik sunsets, too. Do you?" She asked curiously, not even noticing he'd stated the obvious. Even if she had noticed, she wouldn't have cared.
"Are you feeling okay?" She asked suddenly, peering at him curiously. He seemed nervous, but what had he to be nervous about? Hardly any others were awake, none of the stingy bugs were flitting about, why was he so nervous?

Well... she seemed alright so far, didn’t seem to mind what a fool he was making of himself even if he minded. “Thank you, I like my name too. Your name is nice too, unusual.” Bright blue eyes flicked around and dark ears swivelled to make sure that there was nothing behind him. There wasn’t and they settled forward again, intent on the tendril-winged mare. She was very pretty and she was smiling, it was probably alright. No cause to worry at all. The white-maned Bae gave another shake, trying to rid himself of the tension that was creeping back into his muscles. She just wanted to talk to him and he needed to get better at talking, this meeting was a good thing and there was no reason to worry at all.
What if he said something stupid?
“Yes, I like sunsets and sunrises especially now the weather’s a bit warmer.” The stallion made another check of his surroundings and smiled tentatively at the Ichsa before him, hoping it compensated a little for his short answers. “Excuse me, I’m not used to people. Not all that good with them. I’m alright though.” He probably ought to have elaborated a bit more smile or no smile but this Nizhoni didn’t seem the sort who was quick to anger. It was probably alright.
"The grass is good this morning," he commented, ears twisting to make sure that a gust of wind to his right really had been just that. It had. it was alright. He was doing alright so far, hadn’t said anything truly imbecilic. Now he just had to keep it that way.

"Thank you, Virgil!" She said with a smile, adjusting her thin tendril wings, still smiling at him. "I love sunrises and sunsets, they're just so pretty. I love all the different colors," said she with a nod, flicking her curly tail to dispel an irritating fly that had chosen her as its perch. "And yes, it's more pleasant to observe both in warmer weather. I'm glad spring is upon us at least, winter is so cold and... dead." She said the last word after a pause, wasn't too sure which word to use.
"Is it?" She tilted her head slightly, she didn't notice the grass this morning. In order to test this, she dipped her muzzle down to the soft, rich grass beneath her hooves, and plucked delicately a few tender blades, then raised her head again before she chewed and swallowed said foliage. "Ooh, it is! Then again, the grass in the valley is good all the time. It has a certain flavor to it this morning, though," she said thoughtfully. "Maybe because spring is finally here? The grass must be happy about the changing of the seasons and the warming weather, as well," she said with an affirmative nod. It made sense to her, anyway. "Do you think so?"

Blue eyes watched the graceful curl of the mare's neck as she bent to feed. Such elegant lines she was made of, all Nequus were made of and yet he couldn't express what about them was lovely as he wished he could. Even the movement of her lips was a masterwork. If only he could speak aloud the poetry of such simple motions.
"Mmm..." How could he respond though? Grass, happy? Eccentric this one. "Well... I suppose the longer days and the warmer weather are good for it," Virgil tried, casting his eyes down at the verdant carpet under their hooves and wishing he was better at friendly tones; people always told him his voice was as icy as his coat. Embarrassed at his ineptitude with other people, the Bae kept his gaze thus lowered for some moments before looking back up at the skies and clearing his throat.
"You part of a herd then?" he asked in an attempt to carry the conversation on. He wanted to linger with this mare a while; so far she was friendly, didn’t mind his poverty of speech and his quiet, often neutral tones. Perhaps she would continue not to mind, perhaps they could even be friends. One could always hope.

Niz hadn't noticed that Virgil was watching her as she moved. Even if she did notice, it wouldn't have mattered to her in the least. She nodded at his statement, an agreement in her mind, and smiled. "The warmer weather is good for all of us, I think. Gives us a chance to thaw out after the cold months," she said with another nod.
"A herd? Oh, yes, I am. I'm part of the herd that follows my good friend Nyx, she's an aeri." A slight breeze blew across her body, displacing the curly locks that ran along her neck. She shook out her mane to fix that problem; it always irritated her when the wind played with her mane. "Nyx is really nice," she added as she watched him again with her bright emerald eyes. "Are you part of a herd, too?"

"No," the Bae replied as he watched the fluttering of the Ichsa mare's curly mane. Divine. "No I'm not," he added after a moment, realising how abrupt he must have sounded. "But yes, spring makes life easier, much easier." The blue stallion swished his curly tail at a passing insect, trying to think of something else to say.
"I've not met many Aeri," he went on eventually. "Never seen an Ichsa before you, either." Virgil lowered his head to nibble at the grass for a moment before looking back up at the green-eyed mare. "You don't fit the stereotype," he commented, meaning it as a compliment. It wasn’t a very good one he had to admit but it seemed the simplest way to say she seemed kind and gentle rather than proud and selfish as tendril-winged mares were said to be.

"Okay," she said. It didn't seem odd to her that he wasn't in a herd. After all, she hadn't been in a herd before Nyx accepted her. Maybe he just hadn't found a good herd yet? Hmm.. "Oh, I've not met many aeri either, Nyx is the first and only aeri I've met. I haven't met many bae before, either. I've only met one other ichsa, he was nice," she said with a nod, thinking of Maurice. I wonder how he's doing..
She paused, watching him. What was that word? "Stair-ee-oh-type...?" She repeated, or attempted to, slowly. What in the world did that mean? "What's a.. stair-ee-oh-type, Virgil? I've never heard that word before. What does it mean, and what do you mean I don't fit it? Am I supposed to?" Now she was worried. What was this big word that he said she didn't fit? Was it bad that she didn't fit it? Should she try to fit it? How in the world could you even fit into a staireeohtype?

Oh dear. He was going to have to give and explanation of something? "Stereotype," the white-maned stallion repeated to give himself space to think. "It's... it's how people think you'll be, what they think you'll be like from what you are. Like... Aeri are said to be very peaceful, Bae very excitable in general and... and Ichsa proud and a bit selfish." Foolish too, but he wouldn't say that now. Nizhoni was nice and she didn't deserve to have the stamp of her breed laid upon her in even the smallest way.
"They're very silly," the small Nequus went on after a few moments. "Sterotypes. Not many people really fit into them but they're still there." Virgil gave an equine shrug, expressing his helplessness in the matter. Nequus were Nequus and stereotypes seemed to make them feel safe, feels as though they could know someone before they'd even spoken a word to them. Seeing the world as it was; full of great, beautiful and terrible individuals tending only slightly if at all to the traits ascribes to their breeds was a frightening thought. He ought to know, for that was the way the Bae stallion saw life; unknowable, unpredictable and probably dangerous.

"Stereotypes.." She repeated slowly after his explanation, to ensure she could say it right. "Well that sounds silly. How could you know someone before you even talk to them?" This idea seemed very silly an childish to the red-creme mare. The only possible way to know someone before you met them would be if you had seer powers, which she knew not many had such abilities. "And, if hardly anyone fills the stereotype, why do we even have stereotypes at all? It just seems like a really silly and unnecessary thing to have," she said with a nod. "You don't fit the bae stereotype I don't think, you certainly don't seem excitable. You seem like a very nice stallion to me, who is very polite." She nodded o affirm this statement. "You have very pretty eyes, too." Completely irrelevant, but she wanted to tell him all the same. Everyone enjoys getting compliments, she figured, and why would he be any different?

Virgil gave a shrug, slightly flustered by the Ichsa's compliment; he had pretty eyes? Well they were quite striking and he liked them himself but he was unused to others expressing their approval of him. Still, he couldn’t help but feel a pleased little glow. It was nice to be thought well of, and wonderful that Nizhoni liked not only his eyes but himself as well.
"I think they just make people feel more comfortable,” he said after a while in answer to the mare’s question. “They can pretend the world isn't as crazy as it actually is. Make them feel safe I suppose. They are very silly though." Silence hung heavy in the air for a moment before the stallion opened his mouth to speak again and blurted; "your eyes are beautiful too, and the rest of you. Err... You're so... elegant." The dark blue male cleared his throat, not sure whether to be gratified or embarrassed that, for once, he'd managed to speak his mind. Not that his words had done his thoughts justice but at least he'd tried.

"Why can't they just be comfortable knowing that everyone is different and accepting it?" She asked, flustered at the silliness of some nequus. What purpose did it serve to judge others before they even met? "Then they need to open their eyes, because it's a very silly thing to do," she said with a nod. Really, now, what purpose did it serve? It seemed completely unnecessary and, in her opinion, utterly stupid to assume one knew others before even meeting them.
"Me? Beautiful?" She blushed at the compliment, caught off-guard by it completely. She'd never really thought of herself as being beautiful, she just merely thought of herself as another nequus, just like everyone else. But, her, beautiful? "Thank you, Virgil," she said earnestly, still blushing at such a compliment. "No one has ever said that to me before, I don't think. At least, I don't recall anyone ever saying such a thing." Oh dear, now she had to think about it. But, she quickly dismissed the thought to continue the conversation. "I don't really know about elegant, either. I feel more clumsy than most others do. What about me could be elegant?"

The Bae shrugged and then copied the taller Nequus' nod. "Yes, people are very silly. Everyone has their own brad of silliness I suppose." He knew he was silly at times, at lots of times actually. What was there to fear in the world... except everything. Silly to startle at shadows and yet, there it was. A thing he couldn't change.
"You are," the white-maned stallion went on after a pause. "Beautiful bright eyes, curling hair and elegance... Your build. Long legs, delicate wings... You just look... graceful. It's a Ichsa thing I believe, something about how your breed is boned." Well that had been a bit... Well, he hadn't described it very well at all. Still, the mare before him didn't seem to mind his somewhat unique way with words, or lack thereof. It would be fine.
