This just reminded me...I'm competing in my first tournament Saturday, on kata and padded weapons sparring. Any tips? Mainly on kata...what do judges look for, and what are common mistakes?

Mainly on kata...what do judges look for, and what are common mistakes? Probably smooth and crisp movement. Show power in strikes and confidence all the way through, regardless if you mess up. Try not to look to nervous, yannoe?

Try not to look to nervous, yannoe? At the recent taekwondo competiton i was at, the people that won the patterns(kata) competiton just had to flow well from move to move, show good power and speed in the moves and control. and not make any mistakes! What I dont understand is how the judges decide which competitor is best when there are lots of competitors all with different instructors there for different ways of doing the same pattern..if they a couple of competitors both did the pattern correctly good precision, and power etc how do they decide which is best? And how can It be fair as for me - I slipped when doing a flying kick. and now have concussion, and a cavity in my eye which leaves a little black dot hovering around in my line of vision..which I will have forever, and untill im used to it its a major distraction when sparring seeing this black dot floating around... and the concussion just makes me drift off and loose concentration... which isnt good for the 2minute rounds. and I have to be careful of my head!!

Mainly on kata...what do judges look for, and what are common mistakes? For the Kata make sure that you drill the it at least an hour a day. You need to practice it until you reach the point where you couldn't ******** it up if you tried. The judges will be looking for footwork, posture, deep and powerful stances. When you perform the kata maintain the same pace throughout and the yell on the final movement is a death blow so make sure it is agressive and loud. As for the weapons sparring is it continous or point based?

Alright, thanks for all the tips. I'll try to remember all that, and drill my kata. As for the weapons sparring, it's point-based. I'm going to be using the fukuru shinai, which is an extremely padded and flexible sword. It says 6 points wins in 2 minutes, so it's point based. I'm not sure what the actual point system is, though.

The thing about doing kata at comp is dont make mistakes. You wouldn't believe how many people do, people who ordinarily would do their kata fine even in grading go to pieces at comp and make silly mistakes. The secret is apart from lots and lots of practise is to relax and not get too worried about it, you might do well you might not, just focus on what you have to do and do it. Go kick some a** biggrin

went to the Uk Taekwon-do competion last weekend. Was amazing too watch the most interesting thing too watch was the higher black belts doing their patterns. Recently I have been doubting Tkd and how much Im improving, what influences I have that make me want to continue, what goals I hope to achieve and generaly how much Im enjoying it...I always used too enjoy every second of every lesson... I was almost giving up But going to that competion re-injected that passion for TKD that i thought I had lost, not being able to compete was awfull as soon as it started up and for the rest of the day I wanted to be doing it!!
And now I love it like i did before!
