The butterfly flew past her nose, making the little yellow filly sneeze loudly. She glared at it with her yellowish eyes and then bounded after it when the flying thing flew away. It thought it was smarter then her, didn't it? Well...well, she'll show it! She'll prove it wrong!

And then, as she was looking away, another butterfly seemed to just appear out of no where and fly past her nose.

Making her sneeze once again. With her bottom quivering, Abattie started to cry. What seemed like a normal soquili's days worth of tears was just now flowing out of the yellow filly at full speed.

No one made her cry. That's what her Papa said, no one was worthy to make her upset...even though she did get upset pretty darn easy, there was no way she was going to let a stupid flying creature that was a million times smaller than her, get her down.

So Abattie bounded after it, passing the little metal post that her parents said, if she or her siblings crossed, they'd get in trouble. It was too far, too far and if they crossed it, they wouldn't know their way back.

Darting into the forest (because that was the only thing around and there was no butterfly in sight) the little yellow filly was sure she'd be able to find her evil doer in here. Passing by a bush, Abattie sneezed loudly.

What? No! That wasn't fair. Peering into the bush that she passed, the filly started to wail even harder and louder. There were tons of butterflies now, what seemed like 10 or 20! Getting angry, Abattie stompted her foot and wailed louder. Perhaps her cries would scare them away.

Nostalgia was deep in thought when she heard the wail. Snuggled in between the two remaining baskets, her head shot up and she looked out of the cave's entrance, and into the forest. At night, sometimes, she would hear the horrible cry of a creature falling victim to a lion or kalona, but never this early in the morning, and never sounding so... young.

Was it a foal in distress? What was she going to do? What COULD she do?

Lifting herself up, which was a hard task to accomplish in itself while wearing a dress, Nostalgia walked towards the entrance of the cave and looked out for a better view. Her lavender eyes hurt with the sunlight peaking in, but she forced herself to continue searching the area. For if there was danger, that could mean herself and her offspring were in danger as well. It was abnormal for her to be out in the daylight, so seeing things uncovered by the shadows of the night really confused things for her.

Again, the shrill cry reached her ears, and she began to panic. She couldn't leave her babies defenseless to go out and investigate, but if indeed a foal was being attacked, what would stop the predator from then finding the alicorn and her new children?

"Where are you!?" she finally called out, feeling useless as she stood by the cave's entrance. "Follow my voice! I'll protect you!"

True, she was not much of a fighter, but having given birth to three children, she now possessed her own maternal streak that could make a stallion cower. She wasn't about to let anything happen to her young ones, and she would defend them to her death with her horn and hooves and by whatever means she could. She also knew, in her heart, that she would want a fellow mare or stallion to protect her young if they ever were seperated and were under attack, and likewise, she wanted to help this foal out. If only there was another way!

As much as she wanted to close her eyes from the burning sunlight, she kept them open, watching and waiting for whatever would happen next.

That stupid little creature, it tempted her! It teased her and it proved her wrong! That wasn't fair! That wasn't fair! A dark brown huff stompted on the ground harder than before and she was about to scream out something at the top of her lungs.

But then a voice just kinda came out of no where. A voice that didn't belong to neither her Papa or her Mama. Frantically looking around to see who spoke, the little filly pouted. There was no one to be found! Who was talking to her?

The voice still stayed in her mind though, 'Follow my voice! I'll protect you!' Follow? Well, then she would just have to make her way over to where it came from, right? Since no body had yet to show themselves, she'd have to go find it!

The owner sounded very motherly, though...which was a good thing. Abattie's Papa told her never to listen to strangers, but...it was too good to pass up. Someone actually wanted to protect her from the stupid flying thing that made her sneeze! How nice!

So, Abattie just shrugged and bounded off in the direction that the voice came from, not knowing what to expect at all. "I'm here!" She shouted in a high pitched filly voice. "Where're you?"

Nostalgia sighed in relief when she heard the shrill voice call back to her. Apparently, they weren't in TOO much trouble, if they could manage to respond like they did.

"I'm over here!" She called out again, trying to project her voice out into the forest. Her lavender and silver hooves wanted to reach out.. wanted to approach and meet the young filly or colt, but her head kept her where she was. Going out in search of another wouldn't leave any defense for her own two little ones, and she couldn't bear to lose them... not when one already was far off beyond her reach with a heartless stallion of a father.

"Can you follow my voice, little one?" she asked, pausing in hopes of receiving an answer.

The voice came back, and it sounded much more happy. Well, what now? She shrugged to herself and trotted out of the forest, trying her best to follow the voice that called to her.

And found herself running at a cave. With a strange mare staring at her. Abattie stopped short, at the strange sight. This mare! She looked so funny, but so cool!

The filly had tumbled, though, when she stopped. The little yellow legs that were hers gave out on her at the last minute and she fell. "Opps." Abattie mumbled loudly, trying her best to get back up on her feet.

And then she tilted her head upward to stare at the mare in front of her. "Yea..." Abattie giggled. "You're funny looking. You're wearing something. What's that?" She asked, pointing to the dress that Nostalgia was wearing.

Little yellowish eyes were torn to the wings almost automatically, and it made the little filly gasp. She had never even met a wind soquili before...let alone a flutter...those wings! They were the prettiest part about the mare for sure! "You're so pretty ma'am." Abattie stated, still staring.

Her tense muscles finally relaxed as she spotted the yellowish tan filly make her way out from behind the trees. The little foal's eyes grew wide as she noticed Nostalgia, and the older mare blushed, having forgotten how... unusual her appearance seemed to others. It had been a long while since she had met another horse, and she feared that her looks would scare off this little filly before she could find out what had caused all the crying.

When the foal giggled and motioned towards her dress, Nostalgia gave her a surprised smile. Why... she didn't seem scared at all. More curious than anything, from the looks of things.

"This?" she asked, then leaned her head down to gently tug on the fabric. "This is called a dress. It's protection from the cold and weather."

She noticed the little filly's eyes roaming over her, and then finally resting on her ethereal wings. Smiling, she allowed her wings to flutter a bit, showing off their glow and beauty, before resting them against her body once again.

"Thank you, little one." Nos said, her voice quieter than before, "You yourself are a beauty. I don't think I've ever seen such a pretty filly before... but, why were you crying? Are you hurt?"

The smile that came from the older horse was very soothing, Abattie could tell that she cared, if not for her...then definitely foals in general. Like her Grandmama, her Papa said that she gave off this warm and beautiful smile...almost identical to the one that the yellow filly wore herself.

Protection from the cold and weather. Well, luckily Abattie came out of her basket just in time to miss the cold weather that swept this land...so the little filly had no idea just HOW cold Nostalgia was talking about. But, since she said it, Abattie just decided to go along with it anyways. "Where's mine? I want one!" She yelled loudly, stomping her hoof on the hard ground.

The tears didn't come that time, she did her best to hold them back. Her Papa had always told her that if she was going to cry, it was best to try and not do so...but if the tears came, they came. So the little yellow filly breathed in real heavy and giggled instead.

And then Nostalgia had done what she probably....shouldn't have done. She made the tears come. By showing off her wings, she made the little yellow filly want to make a scene. "Soo pretty ma'am! Soo pretty!" She said, half happily, half angry that those didn't belong to her.

Jumping up and down for a moment to show her excitement, Abattie tried her best to stop crying. This old mare showed her caring for the little one, the least she could do was act like a proper young lady, right?

"You're welcome ma'am!" She giggled happily, "Really? Well my Papa says that I get all my looks from my Mama because he said that he's not that handsome or whatever himself. But he says that my sister and I are the two prettiest fillies ever!" Abattie nodded quickly, one of those 'I know I'm right because my parents said so' type nodds that children always gave.

"Hurt? Me? No! Aha! Papa says that he'd kill the creature that even laid their hoof on me, so no I'm not hurt. I was crying because these stupid flying things made me sneeze. It wasn't fair." The little filly frowned. It wasn't fair, was it?
PostPosted: Sat Mar 31, 2007 8:35 pm

Nostalgia saw the distress cross the little filly's face and wondered what was going on in her mind. Her eyebrows raised as the foal stamped her hoof, demanding her own clothing.

"Silly girl," Nos said, suppressing her own giggle, "Now why in the world would you want to wear anything? You look very beautiful without having to put on anything to cover you up. Me, on the other hand... why, I'm rather plain underneath this old dress. And besides, don't you think you'd get too hot wearing clothing like the two leggers? After all, summer's on it's way."

The little foal looked like she was about to cry, and Nostalgia's wings began to ruffle themselves in alarm. Had she said something to offend or hurt her feelings? She heard her mention how pretty her wings were... were her wings upsetting the little filly?

"Here... if they're bothering you, let me remove them," she said calmly, trying to figure out a quick solution. Closing her eyes, she willed her wings away and within an instant, they flickered out of sight.

(so now she looks like this >w< )

"Is this better, my dear?" She asked, glancing back to make sure they had indeed dissapeared. Please don't get upset... I don't know what to do to make you feel better.

She smiled, listening to her speak of her family. It seemed as if she had very loving parents, and Nos paused for a moment to wonder if she perhaps knew her father or mother. Shaking her head, she let the thought go. There were far too many Soquili in the land for Nos to have met, so the probability was very slim.

"Ooo, sounds like you had a nasty run-in with either a bug or a butterfly!" Nos remarked, playing in to her remark. "Those things can be quite atrocious, can't they?"

Motioning her head towards the cave behind her, she asked, "Would you like to come into my home and visit for a while so that those nasty bugs can fly away?"

The older mare seemed to act just like her own parents did when she wanted something. That wasn't fair, it was like she couldn't escape them. "Thank you, ma'am...but I like the stuff you have and I want my own!" The stubborn young filly said rather loudly, she had a tendency to carry on her voice when she got upset. "You're very pretty, ma'am." The little yellowish filly said, now a little bit more happier.

Then Abattie frowned. Remove her...? What? Yellowish eyes stared in delight as the beautiful things that were on her back just suddently...disappeared. Like her father Bairn, the young female didn't fear things like that, she found them very interesting, and the older mare didn't give off a bad aura.

So there really was nothing to be afraid of. "How did you...? Did you....you...do that?" Abattie stumbled for words, still staring. "I won't cry no more, ma'am, I won't. Papa says that I need to be mature."

"Art what? Who? What's a bug or a butterfly? I said a flying thing, it was very tiny...smaller than me and it had these tiny things like you do that helped it fly." The young female giggled softly, as Nostalgia was confusing her. Too many big words, not enough time to think.

Looking into the cave, her Papa's words came into mind. Bairn had told her never to trust strangers that wanted her to go into their home, or spend time with them, unless otherwise stated by either him or Mama. So, Abattie repeated him. "My Papa says that I can't go anywhere that's unsafe." She paused for a moment to think, "But I guess I can go in there, just to get away from the flying things. And I think I'm lost...so I don't know how to get home."

Nostalgia had to take a step back and process the little filly's words. She was a talker, and that amused her, but she hadn't been prepared for a conversation, much less a visitor, in her quiet home.

"I am what your Papa would call a spirit," she said lightly in explanation, afraid that using the term 'ghost' would scare the foal. "I tend to be a bit different from a regular horse."

Smilling, she nodded her head as the filly explained the creatures 'attacking' her. "Those sound like butterflies to me. I'm not sure why they're called butterflies, but those are what we refer them as."

She turned to begin walking up towards the cave. "Your papa sounds like a smart stallion, little one. My cave is safe, and I'm sure we can figure out how to get you home. Besides, I have two little ones inside who I'm sure you'd love to meet." Pausing, her head tilted back towards the yellowish foal. "By the way, my name is Nostalgia; may I ask you what yours is?"

A spirit. That's what the clothed lady called herself. What was a spirit? Something that didn't have a body, right? A spirit. That's what it sounded like, but this mare definitely had a body...so why was she a spirit? "Well, you may be different but so am I. You're pretty, I'm pretty. Don't matter how we look, it's how we act that counts!" The little foal giggled and wagged her little tail playfully, she had just repeated something that she overheard her Papa tell her Mama one day. Abattie didn't really know what it all meant, but since it came from her Papa it HAD to be special.

"A butterfly. Okay, well then I'll be sure to knock'em dead next time they decide to cross me!" The young dark yellow filly nodded slowly, pretending to be smart. She was, in a way...smarter than some foals, but that's because she applied herself. She watched things and asked questions, just to gain more knowledge.

"Ooh, yes Papa is very smart! He's the smartest Papa in the world!" Abattie giggled once again, and the image of Bairn quickly passed through her mind. Probably her number one role model, if she had one. Everything she ever wanted to be was all residing in him. "Okay, lady I trust you! Ooh, wait? Little ones? Like...foals like me? Ooh I wanna play with them!" Abattie quickly followed behind Nostalgia, anxious to meet this foals she spoke about.

"I'm Abattie, No...no...nosta...ma'am." The young foal had trouble pronoucing the older mare's name, so she just stuck with ma'am. "My Papa and Mama and sister and brother call me Attie, but Papa says that it's a name that only those close to me should deserve to call me. My own special Nick name."
PostPosted: Thu Apr 05, 2007 3:48 pm

Nodding her head, Nos smiled. "Yes, that's all that counts." She agreed, secretly pleased the foal couldn't tell and fear what she truly was, though there was no need to.

Laughing gently, she slowed down to allow the foal to enter the cave before herself. "Yes, they are foals, just like you, but I'm afraid they have yet to venture out of their baskets yet. These things take time, of course, as I'm sure you remember being in your own special basket."

This little foal was certainly a lovable one, and Nostalgia thought it sweet of her to speak of her father in such high regards. She herself felt a pang in her heart, as she knew her own foals would know or have a father figure of their own, but she would have to manage as their sole role model.

She watched the foal come closer towards the cave, and that's when the yellow filly identified her name. "Attie, hm?" Nos said, trying it out for her own tongue. "Such a pretty name for such a pretty foal. I bet it was your smart Papa who gave that name to you, wasn't it?"

Holding back a laugh for fear of embarrassing Abattie, Nos bowed her head in greeting, tilting her horn in the foal's greeting. "Well, it is very nice to meet you, Miss Attie. And please, call me Nos. That's my own nickname. Nostalgia's such a troublesome name to pronounce, isn't it?"

The cave was huge, much bigger than anything she'd ever seen. It was a wonder why her Papa and Mama hadn't found this earlier and lived here instead of that open field place that they called home. It didn't protect them from bad weather, but this thing? It definitely did because it had a roof over it!

Abattie listened to the older mare speak about her children and then she nodded. "Yes, I remember. Me and my siblings took awhile to come out of our baskets too. But I'll bet they'll be very pretty just like you once they decide they're ready." Her voice was high pitched like a little filly's is supposed to be, but the young one still tried to make it sound like she knew what she was saying, and wasn't just talking. She, along with her siblings and cousins all wanted to grow up. They all definitely got that from Bairn and Aruna.

"Where's their Papa?" She asked, looking around the cave unable to see any old, strong and wise stallion. That's how she pictured them all looking, and so far she hadn't seen any. "Out getting food for you?"

The little dark yellow filly giggled when Nostalgia spoke about her name. "Thank you. That's what everyone says. But yea, my Papa named me and my brother. My Mama named my sister. Their names are Kiefer and Tahlia."

But no, Nostalgia didn't embarrass Abattie at all. It took a LOT to make the little filly uncomfortable. It was rather something she inherieted from both her parents. Neither of them ever really blushed, so the little filly rarely ever blushed herself. A soft giggle was heard coming from the filly as the older mare greeted her. "It's nice to meet you too, Nos. It is. Yea, but I like your name. I think..." She paused.

What was that? Didn't her Papa once mention 'Nostalgia' to her or someone else while she was still in her basket? Sure, her Papa had said a lot of things, but Abattie remembered that. It was a name that stuck out, a name that felt like she wasn't ever supposed to forget.

"Never mind." Abattie finished her sentence. "Nos....I mean ma'am. Can I call you ma'am because Papa says it's polite unless you're friends with the other person."
PostPosted: Wed Apr 11, 2007 4:22 pm

Nos smiled sadly as she watched the eager filly search the cave for the missing stallion. Of course she wouldn't know any better... every foal had a father, didn't they?

"I'm afraid, sweetheart, that the Papa of those baskets over there has left." she said quietly, motioning her head towards the baskets nearby. "He left with their sibling on a terribly long trip."

Leaving it at that, she moved past the foal and nuzzled at the baskets, letting them know she was there. "Hello little ones." She whispered, nudging both of them, "You have a visitor today."

Raising her head and with a twinkle in her lavender eye, she asked, "Of course you are welcome to call me m'am. But I had assumed we had become friends, Attie, haven't we? So it's only proper for you to call me Nos. Would you like to say hello to my little ones? Perhaps they could grow to become your friends as well."

The news of the baskets Papa had hurt the little yellow foal terribly. Life without a Papa? That wasn't a life at all. Of cource she loved her mother and would do anything for her, but her Papa was extra special. And they had different purposes. Papa's were there to make you happy and laugh and feel safe. Mama's were there to love you and just take care of you. Well, who was going to protect them? Miss Nos didn't seem like the type to hurt someone if they came near her, she was too nice.

But all Abattie could do was frown. It wasn't in her place to do anything about it. "Well, he should come back because it's not fair to them." Little soft yellow eyes stared up at the ghost mare. Bounding over to the baskets, the filly looked at each of them with a sad face. Poor kids. "If my Papa ever found out that there are two little babies without a Papa and another sibling without their siblings, he'd hunt down that Papa and want to hurt him." That was true, Bairn hated the idea of abandoned baskets, let alone stallions that left their families.

Nostalgia's next comment to her had made the little filly ponder this. Friend? She hadn't expected to make one so easily, and the idea was just kinda not interesting. But something about this certain mare didn't bother her as much as most others did. So Attie nodded. "Yes, we're friends Nos." The words slid of her tongue rather quickly, such a strange thing to say. It was in her Papa's nature to not want friends, so it was in hers, too.

"Ooooh." Was her next words. "They're so pretty, Nos. Hello little babies, I'm Abattie. If your Mama's right, we can be great friends when you come out!" She grinned, hoping that somehow she'd let herself have a friend or two in her life. Perhaps maybe even three. Family was ultimately all she cared about anyways.
