So I'm getting ready to set up my 55 gallon aquarium, I've decided to stick with freshwater. I'm looking for any suggestions from fish to plants. The set up I got includes a heater and a AquaClear 70.
This will be my first 'big' tank (I've only kept a 10 gallon before). I don't really like aggresive fish, but I'd like to keep something other than livebearers and tetras. I do like to keep well planted tanks, so I was thinking of using sand under gravel for the plants' sake.

Well,I think that whatever you do,a couple plecos or cories would be good for algae/mulm control.Panda cories are really cute and nice.As for the rest of the feesh, well, whatever you like!So long as they're "compatible" feeding and water wise......

If you want a peaceful but active tank you could consider doing a species tank of Rainbow fish. 2 good species would be Salmon-red rainbowfish (Glossolepis incisus) and Boeseman's Rainbowfish (Melanotaunia boesemani), they would make a great looking planted tank and you wouldn't have to worry about them eating holes into your plants either.
If you wan't a more varied tank I would recomend a small schooling fish (Rummynose tetras, Whitecloud Danios, Zebra Danios, ect..) and a pair of "Show fish" (meant to be larger than other fish and verry pretty) like a pair of any one species of Gouramis (make sure not to mix species or they may fight eachtoher), Gouramis make great show fish because like the rainbowfish they have verry vibrant colors and can have many colors on a single fish (Look at Dwarf Gouramis or male Pearl Gouramis).
If you are worried about algae I wouldn't recomend a Pleco for your size tank and many other catfish can be aggressive or grow to outragous sizes. A safe choice for bottomfeeding fish would be corydoras, they are fairly small and tend to schoal (like to stay with fish of the same kind, but don't show pack-like swimming patterns as schooling fish do).
If you need any help with picking out the # of fish to get or picking out filters feel free to ask and i'll help as best i can =D

Try getting a Geophagus or two. They're really fun and easy to keep, and their behavior is fascinating.
