It was night and a lone figure prowled the rooftops of Durem. This figure was clad in dark clothing, most notable a rather long cape that flowed around the man's figure with every leap and bound from one rooftop to the next. Boots settled down upon a building, one overlooking a park. The man crouched, reaching behind his cape and grabbing a small set of binoculars and bringing them up to his face. His eyes narrowed behind the black mask he wore that hid all of his face save for his mouth and chin, and he examined the park, spying a small nest soon.

"Hm... my information tells me that she should be around here somewhere... Those birds are endangered, it's my duty to keep them safe..." he said to himself. He wondered just WHY it was his duty, I mean, his alter ego did have the Earth ring, but still... Protecting birds wasn't his idea of a good time on a Friday night.

Kat wandered through the park, swatting off what seemed to be an invisible fly beside her.

"Get lost," She muttered quietly. Apparently mother birds disliked being killed and having their chicks adopted by the murderess. And Vanessa had almost murdered the catgirl for what the chicks had done to her hair. In the end she'd managed to make it look almost presentable, though it was a far cry from the catgirl's normal orange.

Why she was letting the chicks live in her hair was a different story. She'd already eaten the mother, but the chicks were more like a light snack. And she liked her snacks fresh.

Bat-Crim, masked defender of the night(!), spotted the catgirl with his binoculars. He also, much to his dismay, spotted the birds she seemed to be carrying around... On her head. Being a man of action, that is what he took! He lept from the rootop of the bakery he was perched atop and hit the ground crouched. Before anyone could notice, he had made his way across the desolate street and into the dark trees of the park. Quickly he would set his back against a tree a few yards away from the catgirl after his low approach on quiet steps, an approach behind her that he made very carefully, gradually drawing nearer over each passing moment until he had made his way to the tree he was now up against.

"Can't endager the birds... I'll have to be careful about that." he said as he reached into his belt and withdrew a bat-shaped boomerang which unfolded after he flicked it open as if it were a spring-assisted knife.

After a moment's mental preparation, he rolled his body around the tree as his feet carried him in a hasty sidestep, ending up facing the catgirl. Simultaneously he would throw the batarang at her torso area, making sure not to aim too high as the sharp projectile could very well cleave a baby bird in two with ease.

On the average day, Kat was very very difficult to sneak up on. Her hearing was super sensitive, and even the slightest noise within a 20 foot radius was clearly audible to her. The girl was also hyper paranoid, and generally looked about at the sources of the sounds, even when in a relatively safe area, just to keep tabs on her surroundings.

On the average day, Kat didn't have baby birds twittering in her ears, and a ghost bird harassing her. This was not an average day.

And yet, despite this, someone talking to themselves about "endangering birds" still rang clearly through her mind, setting off all kinds of little alarms. Kat whipped around just in time to see a dark stranger throwing what seemed to be a boomerang at her. She quickly dodged to the right, evading the boomarang.

"Not very sporting now, is that?" She snapped at the stranger, a magnum already in hand.

Just as his first batarang took flight, the man had already had his hand on another locked in his belt, under his billowing cape which was draped over his left shoulder.

"Sporting? You're one to bring stuff like that up... Picking on defenseless birds. Normally it wouldn't be a problem between you and I, but I'm afraid you've managed to tangle with the nest of a very rare species. Let the birds go and I'll ignore the fact that their mother probably didn't meet a pleasant end..." said the man smugly as he stared the woman down.

Kat smirked at the man. That voice was quite familar though, and she couldn't quite place it.

"Trust me, that mother was anything but defenseless." She retorted, knowing the bird itself had probably put up a better fight than this man would.

"And why would I have left the chicks there to die? I'm not some monster to let perfectly innocent creatures die without a cause." She hoped the chicks knew how to hang onto a moving nest, because this looked like it was going to get ugly.

"Do you know how expensive it is to buy this kind of gourmet treat?" She continued, not missing a beat.

"Quite." he said. "Still, I'd prefer it if you handed the chicks over." continued the masked man as he shifted to his side a bit, his left finger caressing the edge of the batarang he would draw at a moment's notice if need be.

"C'mon, you don't really want to eat them, do you?"

Kat looked at the man curiously. Not really want to eat them? His tone sounded like he knew her, but what kind of ridiculous thought was that? Of course she would eat them.

Wait, she did know that voice. And that stray strand of pink hair too.

"Crim?" She asked questioningly. "I'm a catgirl. Emphasis on the cat. The whole sneaking up on me thing doesn't even work."

The man seemed to wince a bit as the name was mentioned, but his face stayed stern.

"I am not this one called Crim, I am the terror that stalks in the night... I am the dark figure, watching evildoers before I strike! My goal and pursuit is justice for innocents... And you my lass... rub me the wrong way." said Bat-Crim, laying it on reaally thick.

Kat raised an eyebrow. She didn't really doubt it was Crim. She also really didn't care. It'd been a long day. She didn't need vigilantes trying to steal her hard earned birds.

The gun came up and fired in one smooth motion. She aimed for his thigh. As much as she liked knee-shots, she didn't really need to incapacity Crim permenantly. He might prove useful still.

Bat-Crim darted, yes, DARTED to the left as he was in fact a large DART draped in black stylishly cut armor and spandex. In a motion just as fluid as the Katgirl's, and not a second after her shot rang out, his cape flew upward DRAMATICALLY, revealing his left arm and hand as his left hand came flying out of it to release the batarang he had been impatiently waiting to use, all while in mid-dodge. The batarang was aimed at her gun-hand and would fly in a curved, hard to predict path, curving inwardly toward her.

His right hand would also move, this one to his belt, just as the projectile took flight and he landed on the grass. Gritting his teeth, Bat-Crim leaned forward after the impact of his feet to the earth. His right hand would be unclasping another batarang from his utility belt housing many as he shot off toward the girl with almost inhuman speed, moving in a slightly curved path along he ground, running, approaching like a locomotive in a path opposite of the (left)batarang he had thrown at her just moments before.

Kat was already moving as the boomarang came at her. She hadn't thought it was wise to stand still long after shooting someone. Her aim was the bushes to her left. Having a much shorter path to travel and presumably a faster run, she would undoubtly make it into the cover of the trees before Crim got close, and once in there her camoflague outfit would help greatly.

Once in there, she quickly climbed into the branches of the first tree she saw, in much the same way as a gymnaist would spin about the bars. And then she stopped dead, and scanned for Crim.

"Damnit" is what Bat-Crim would mutter audibly as he realized the cat-girl was on the verge of an escape. His feet would come down to dig into the ground as he stopped himself, at the same moment he would, with a flick of his wrist, withdraw the batarang from his belt and put it in it's ready-to-use position, quickly raising it over his head and cocking his arm back as if he were about to throw it, he would soon find himself pausing as he lost sight of the catgirl rather quickly.

He scanned the area. Damn, no bright orange hair to spot this time, that would be a problem.

No matter...

Ever the resourceful one, he lowered his arm and with his other he reached back into his belt and withdrew a small can-shaped grenade, one that would release a rather foul tear-gas after hurling it into the thick area the catgirl was last seen headed toward. She was a catperson afterall, with a heightened sense of smell, most likely. That was his angle, at least, he hoped it'd flush her out and most of all, he hoped it'd irritate her.

And so he pulled the pin and hurled the grenade into the grassy area Kata had fled to, a smug sense of satisfaction coming over him as he anticipated her anger over such a trick.

The tear gas drifted on a breeze to Kat, stinging her eyes, nose, and mouth. She coughed involuntarily. She needed to move.

Jumping to the ground she bolted further from the scene, keeping the clearing where Crim stood to her left. The baby birds in her hair twittered, scared by the motion. That was not going to work well with them.

Maybe she could just sneak out of the woods without engaging Crim? Running wasn't her style, but neither was fighting with birds in her hair. Having put about a good distance between her and the tear gas, she ducked quietly behind a bush. What should her next move be?

Bat-Crim frowned, his attempt at flushing her out into an area where he could see her apparently a failed gambit. He reached up to his mask, placing his hand on the left side of it flat, he muttered a few simple words.

"Infrared, activate."

Soon his mask's eye coverings were switched into a special hi-tech infrared mode, and he would scan the area with his eyes.

"Hm... Hard to tell in this area... s**t... She must be keeping low." said the batty-crusader, his eyes scanning all he could see. He walked around cautiously, peering about as he kept somewhat low, his dark attire undoubtably making him harder to see just as her camoflage did her.
