I'm just starting on a fresh conlang at the moment. Its sound is mostly based on Japanese and Swahili with occasional German consonant clustars, but its word formation is heavily influenced by German in that it forms long and complex compound words. I'm starting to think that these compounds are getting too long and unweildy though. Below is a sample that demonstrates what I mean. The first words are mostly roots, the second set is some of the compounds that are made from them.
color Kari Red a-kari Blue ao-kari Yellow mi-kari Black schv-kari White wi-kari
light juu dark kuu
intense ja neutral kaja mild maja
matter lou solid ma-lou liquid wa-lou
temperature jin hot he-jin cold gn-jin
person wul male klu-wul female snu-wul
~~~~~ Kari base green aomi-kari intense green jaaomi-kari dark dull green kuuka'aomi-kari grey wischv-kari
Lou base blood heja'awa-lou water kawa-lou urine miwa-lou dirt/ground ami'aojama-lou clay a'ami'aojama-lou potter wul a'ami'aojama-lou
And that's where it starts getting rather unwieldy...
Another issue I have is a variant of the second person I'm thinking of including... It'd basically be designed for condescention and would likely be using the same base as the second person, but with a tone on the pronoun and a verb prefix, so it wouldn't be overly complicated... But is that unspeakably petty and snotty?
Condescending is all good. mad D
AND long words aren't a problem if they're easily pronounceable.
I like long Japanese words, because they usually have a nifty rhythm, and once you get a hang of the rhythm the word becomes a cinch to pronounce.
Hajimemashite! Doitashimashite!
Those are the longest ones I know. sweatdrop
Anyway, what you're doing is fine, but you will run into problems if you form all words like that. Complex descriptions and concepts will involve unnecessarily long words or words that are ambiguous.
