I was first introduced to this idea Earth Day I think of last year, but was reminded of it during one of my meetings for a high school students program that branches off of a bird and conservation organization of which I am a member. Wow...that was a long sentence.

Anywho. We met at our city's aquarium for that meeting because we had a guest speaker to come talk to us about sea birds and how they are faring environmentally, and the largest issue is really global warming - the warming water temperatures just do not work for the fish that sea birds eat, and
literally thousands are washing up on shore, emaciated.

Global warming + over-fishing = marine environment catastrophe - not just for birds, but for ALL the organisms that depend on fish. Don't even make me begin to list them all. *coughHUMANScough*

So. We have plenty of threads about global warming and CO2 emissions, how to reduce our carbon footprints, etc. But what about over-fishing? Sadly, marine life oftentimes gets overlooked by people since we can't really relate to it, being land animals ourselves.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium has put up a website describing
Seafood Watch, a program to encourage consumers to buy only specific seafood choices for better oceans. This way, fishers and workers in the fishing/seafood industry can see what consumers prefer - environmentally safe practices of how to fish and also WHAT to fish.

They even have little wallet-sized printables of the list of good/bad seafoods, one for each region.

Just trying to spread the word and be of a little help for all the tree huggers here. heart mrgreen heart

PS - Buying Canadian seafood probably isn't a good idea either - HSUS's organized strike against the yearly, BRUTAL slaughter of baby seals in Canada is why.

Thanks, this is a rally useful guide, and I agree that sea-animal issues can unfortunatly get over-looked sad
