The swirling form of water darted across the sky, the rain moving with it. The drops hit the surface of the lake, thousands of tiny ripples forming, as the swirling mass suddenly dived, crashing into the lake with surprising force. The rain continued to fall, though walking thirteen yards away from the water made one discover that it was not raining there. Very odd occurance indeed.

Gene Adams was an older man in his late sixties, grumpy and rather blunt at all times. He lived in a small cabin away from town with his wife Ellen, who was the only person in the world he cared to speak with. They had gotten married a long time ago, and she liked to tease him about being in love with an old lady. But he only smiled and agreed in kind. He did love her. More than anything. Right now Gene was slogging around the edge of the lake, which had become overgrown and marshy with all the rain that occurred here lately. It was odd, because it wasn’t raining anywhere else. Not in town, not by that crazy inn, not at his home. Nowhere. He wanted to fish, but the lake kept developing sudden soft currents, and his boat would end up back at the edge. He was attempting to fish in just his waders and raincoat, a large yellow hat on his head to keep his face dry. He wasn’t catching anything, and it made him grumpier than usual. He finally flung the whole rod into the lake, the ‘plop’ making him feel slightly better. Then he cursed as he realized what he had just done. He decided to walk for a bit.

The lake had risen a few feet, several trees sticking out of the water. Gene had never seen anything like it. He nearly tripped over a tree root, and cursed to himself, angry with the lake and the rain and the tree’s parents. Gene was usually angry with parents. “Kids today…rotten whippersnappers…never do any work…farming not good enough for ‘em…” He grumbled, one old gnarled hand resting on a tree trunk as he walked past it. Gene froze, his hand curling. There was a young woman propped against it, her lower half under water. The lake seemed to have carried her here… Gene swallowed, bending down to see if the girl was alive. He pressed two fingers to her throat, feeling for a pulse. There wasn’t one. She must have drowned here. “Oh honey…why didn’t you stay safe and dry at home?” He said softly, gruff voice saddened.

Then he jerked his hand back, because he had felt a throb beneath his fingertips. Chiding himself, he waited again, and sure enough, the same throb. She had a pulse, but it was so slow he wondered how she was still alive. To his surprise, the woman mumbled something he didn’t understand, in a soft voice that made him feel strangely calm. He shook her shoulder carefully, his knees protesting at the strain of bending down. He wasn’t as young as he used to be. “Miss? Are you alright?” He asked her, blurry blue eyes wide. Not only was she not dead, she was coming to. Dark eyes fluttered open, another murmured word. She was looking at him quizzically, said something else in that same curious language, but he didn’t know what it was. He extended his hand to help her up, and her dark eyes moved to study it, but clearly not understanding. Then they looked back at him, more strange words from her lips. “Come on now, can’t stay out here all day.” She blinked once, but did not take his hand, and Gene reached for her arm and pulled her up.

She stood fine without his help, wearing little more than white strips of cloth wrapped around her chest and hips, like bandages, and Gene wondered where the girl’s modesty was. She seemed to wonder this as well, her head down as she looked at her ‘clothing’, speaking in a panicked tone now. Gene took his raincoat off, draped it around her shoulders. She said something else, grateful, and he watched her try to fasten the buttons. “Here, like this…” He said, doing the job for her, then giving a gruff “You’re welcome.” When she repeated the earlier gratitude word. “Where is your home?” He asked, and she merely blinked at him. “What is your name?” He asked, starting to feel frustrated that she didn’t understand him. “Can you speak any English at all?!” He said gruffly. He expected more of the strange language, but was surprised to hear the slightly accented words in his own language. “En…glash? Slower?” She seemed to ask, and Gene complied. He was just glad they could talk.

“Slower? Yeah…yeah okay. What’re you doing here?” He pointed towards the middle of the lake. “You could’ve drowned.” The dark eyes watched him carefully, and she took a moment before speaking slowly, forming each word carefully. “I…I cannot remem…ber…” She shook her head, looking down at the water’s surface, seemingly absorbed in the ripples each drop made. “Er…right.” Gene said. Great, he goes out to fish, and he instead brings back a basket case. He wasn’t really angry with her though, just wanted to get her out of the rain. He was shivering, and couldn’t imagine why she was not affected by the cool rain. She didn’t seem to be all there at the moment, and he cleared his throat noisily. Her head lifted and she moved back, as if the noise had startled her. “You’re like a spooked rabbit, girl.” He said gruffly, starting back towards the direction of his house. He could hear the splashing of his own footsteps, but none of hers. When he turned around, he saw that the water’s surface didn’t even tremor when she stepped, as if nothing were there at all. He gave her a funny look. “You’re an odd one mi’dear.” He said, shaking his head and continuing on.

“Well…she’s polite enough…” His wife said to him quietly, as if the small woman would hear them. They were both standing with their backs to the large picture window of their home, watching the mysterious girl walk aimlessly around the kitchen, hands clasped behind her back as if she was afraid to break something. She was wearing the baggy brown sweater his wife had managed to coax her in, which went down to her knees and had sleeves that fell past her hands. When he had lit a fire for her, she had visibly panicked, knocking over the chair she had been in and all but running from the house. Ellen had calmed her while he extinguished the flames, husband and wife terribly confused as to why the girl had reacted so badly. But now she seemed fine, leaning down to study their coffee pot, head tilted a little.

She looked back at them, eyebrows raised, asking permission. Gene saw his wife nod from the corner of his eye. She unclasped her hands and picked up the glass pot, holding it in both hands as she studied it. He and his wife shared a confused look. Then their gazes returned to her. She was turning the pot upside down, looking at it from that angle as well. She never spoke unless he or his wife asked her something, so Gene went ahead and asked. “Did you want some coffee?” She looked at him and blinked. “Cof…ee?” She repeated uncertainly. “Would you like some?” His wife said, and Gene was glad she was here. He didn’t like repeating himself. She didn’t seem to know what it was, and held up the pot in her small hands. “Coffee…pot?” His wife nodded. “No…no one…in coffee pot.” She said, the most she had said at once all evening. He could feel the pity in his wife’s touch on his shoulder, and knew it matched his own. She left his side and went to her, taking the pot from her hands and placing it back on the machine. “There is never anyone in the coffee pot honey.”

The girl blinked at her, dark eyes drifting back to the pot. “Once…” She said soft enough that even Gene’s hearing aids almost didn’t catch it. Ellen shook her head. “No, no one is in there. Why don’t you sit? Would you like something to eat?” She said in a chattering tone, taking the girl’s hand and guiding her back to her vacated chair at the table. The girl sat without protest, dark eyes watching the elderly woman, but not answering. “Food?” Ellen said again, smoothing the apron on her plain dress. The girl blinked.

With a sigh, Gene went into the kitchen to make a ham sandwich, since she didn’t seem to know what they were talking about. He brought it back to the table, setting it down in front of her. His wife stood with one hand beneath her chin, clearly puzzled by the girl. Gene stood behind her, hand on her shoulder as they watched their odd guest blink at the sandwich. After a few moments, she reached out, picked up the sandwich, and turned it over on the plate. The three of them stared down at it.

Gene wasn’t sure how long they stood there, a minute, five maybe. Finally, the girl looked back up at the two of them, face thoughtful, like a child. “Pretty.” “The sandwich?” Gene asked incredulously, openly staring at her. She frowned slightly, looking back at the plate. “Sun…which…” She looked back at him, blinked once. “Pretty sun-which?” Gene shook his head in bafflement. “What’s your name dear?” His wife asked, and Gene looked up again to see if she would answer this time. She was frowning, trying to concentrate. “Name…fluff…” Both he and his wife stared. That could not really be her name. But no, she was referring to something else. The girl straightened, as if hit with a sudden revelation. “Fluff!…” She was looking right at them, as if they knew what this was. Seeing their confusion, the girl put her hands on her head in the shape of animal ears, then “Meow?” “You…have a cat dear?” His wife asked, while Gene wondered why he had bothered with bringing her home. She clearly belonged in an asylum somewhere. But the girl nodded excitedly, and his wife went to her again, resting her hands on her shoulders. “I’m sure…Fluff is okay dear. But what is your name?” The girl seemed troubled that they did not have her cat, but gave her name anyway. “Trivla…” She regarded his wife solemnly, as if her name were something to be ashamed of.

Ellen smiled at her. “Thank you. I am Ellen, and this-” She nodded her head to Gene. “Is Gene. Where is your home, Trivla darling?” Trivla, if that was even a legitimate name, Gene had always disliked all these odd names parents gave their kids, cast her eyes downwards and acted as if speaking to a superior. “I…know it not.” She said, and Ellen cast him a hopeless look. “Honey…what’s wrong? We don’t have to call you by name if you don’t want…” Trivla said nothing, just kept staring at the floor. When Gene started forward to help her out of the chair, she shrank back, as if she thought he would hit her. Now, Gene was a grumpy man, but he had never struck a woman in his life. He stopped in his tracks, looked to his wife. She was frowning slightly. “Come on dear…it’s alright. No one will hurt you here…” She said softly. “Sachin…is…is Sachin coming?” Trivla said quietly, and he thought he saw her shiver. His wife shook her head. “Dear…whoever he is, you are safe from him now. It’s alright.” She soothed, taking her hand and leading her to the extra bedroom.

When she returned, he could see she was concerned. “Well?” He asked, and she met his eyes. “She curled up in the center of the bed…she’ll sleep soon I think.” He sighed. “What do we do with her?” His wife shook her head. “Care for her until she remembers her home I guess…” Gene reached out for her, and Ellen hugged him. “Whoever this Sachin person is, I think he hurt her…maybe tried to kill her even. She was barely clothed when I found her Ellen.” He said softly, resting his chin on her soft white hair. “She didn’t have a scratch on her Gene. Just two markings on her lower back. Tattoos. One was red, the other yellow. Each had the middle missing.” Gene puzzled over this. “And her pulse…Gene…how can it be that slow? Perhaps we should take her to the hospital.” She added, clearly worried. “And what if this Sachin person really exists? We can’t take that kind of risk…” They both thought of the girl’s confusion, of her thoughtful listening and English. Mostly, they thought of her dark eyes, which were heart wrenchingly innocent. “I guess we can’t...but…I guess we can figure it out tomorrow.” His wife finally said, and she moved to his side, both of them heading to their room.

An old alarm clock went off somewhere in the house, followed by a loud Thump! Ellen rose up on one elbow, opening her eyes. What was that noise? “Gene, wake up. Gene?” She mumbled somewhat coherently, prodding him with her palm. “Wha? Whazit?” He grumbled, sitting up halfway. “Did you hear that?” She asked, listening to the alarm clock still ringing somewhere. “I dunno…go back to sleep…check…in…morning…” He mumbled, snoring again. Ellen sighed and pulled back the covers, getting out of bed after putting on her slippers. She trudged down the hallway, opening up the door to Trivla’s room.
