I, myself, am currently a student teacher for middle school orchestra and chorus. This means that before I graduate college with my teacher liscense, I spend a whole semester in a real time middle or highschool classroom teaching all day. Let me tell you, I need all the experience I can get.
My concentration is in strings, being that I play the violin. However, I do have knowledge with band, marching band, some color guard, piano, and chorus. I love to help especially with music theory.
Please, post any music-related questions you may have, and I will do my best to answer them fully. I am not trying to make myself to be a music guru, but I am actually setting this up to help me become a better teacher. If I can explain this audible art through text, then I think I'm going down the right track.
I also plan on posting some random quiz/trivia facts and questions to get our minds working. It's amazing how many little things there are to know in this genre of art.
Question #1: What is the worst thing a vocalist can do when suffering laryngitis (lost voice)?

>> Only the blackest of heartsI am in chorus (well, not this year - but that is still where in the music world I stand) - and I dabble in some string instruments and piano (although I don't have the time for any of the instruments). My main musical life is in theatre though, but it is all still singing (and dancing). Anyway, to your question - attempt singing anything that isn't in their "immediate" range. Actually, singing at all isn't good... or talking for that matter, but singing doesn't help at all. My friend had laryngitis, and she is an alto, but she still tried to sing Hikaru Utada - didn't go over very well. Can feel the purest of love <<

i wish our school had an orchestra, then i wouldve played the cello crying but noooo we only have band... so ive played the flute for 5 years XP but hey, i play NYSSMA level 6 and im only 14 (hell, played it at 13 lol). and i started piccolo a few months back ^_^ i agree with what alex said, singing Utada Hikaru with laryngitis is a very stupid thing to do, even MORE so for an alto. heehee i think ill vote orchestra, even though our school doesnt have one~ i like playing flute with an orchestra better than a band anyway. ~Rin

You guys are on the right track about what to do with laryngitis, but we haven't mentioned the absolute most dentramental thing to do while suffering a lost voice. And it is..... DUN da da DUNN! Whispering!
When suffering laryngitis, one's vocal cords actually swell up, preventing them from vibrating properly. Talking during this somewhat equates to trying to run the mile just after one stepped on the stinger of a bee or wasp. It isn't healthy. Talking, and especially whispering while one's cords are swollen actually encourages callouses, called "nodes", to form directly on the cords, and once these develop, a singer's voice is ruined for the rest of his/her life.
Going to a music conservatory, I've noticed Music Theatre majors take around note pads and are wrapped up in scarfs during winter. At the first sign of a cold, they stop talking completely and write notes to friends. The rest of the university staff understands that when they go on vocal arrest, they aren't to call on this person during class to force them to speak. These people know that the student's whole career is on the line the more they talk while sick.
What's really funny is that this is a great excuse to get some of my chatty chorus girls to shut up for a day or two during the winter.

Yeah, I would worry more about it if I ever decided to persue a career in the arts - but as I hate teaching and find acting/singing/well-paying art jobs of any other sort a bit... unreliable, for lack of better words, but as I do not - I don't care too much about my voice. I used to play the clarinet, but my asthma kept me from doing that - although I was at the 7th grade level during 4th grade, so I probably would be great at it now... but my asthma keeps me from doing stuff like that - it's not as bad with singing, but I still can't do any high parts (I'm very low in the alto zone) and I can't hold notes out for too long because of the breathing problems, but I can sing hard rock and some other things that guys sing (my friends have a band and I'm their singer whenever they need one - mostly they're just instrumental though).

yeah i dont sing much just cuz i get a sore throat easily, nowadays (play the flute or piccolo for twenty minutes and it hurts like hell.... not fair!)... but i still love the arts, even if i dont get the opportunity to go into them ^_^ and alex.... you do? who? i can only think of a few friends of yours that play string instruments and one of them is a much better singer than you are, no offense... and that's paula. she sings AWESOME (shes in the musical, shes gotta at least sing pretty well.... but ive heard her before, her voice is beautiful) and she plays violin, right? though i doubt violin would be in a band XD

Yeah - they go to a different school, which is why I am not a permanent member - and Paula couldn't sing for their band, it's heavy metal - which requires screaming more then anything else, and the singing is half-rap anyway, but there is still some deep sung parts (and loud whispering too)... she sings better for pop/jazz/songs that girls are traditionally meant to sing. And yeah, she plays the violin, and the fiddle I suppose (Fiddler on the Roof, afterall).

she told me last year in science (the class we had together~ twas fun!) that during parts where she was dancing, she wasnt really playing the fiddle cuz that would be too difficult but yeah the rest of the time i think she was actually playing.... your voice isnt too musical, so heavy metal would be perfect XD

You'd be surprised on how often violins/fiddles are coming into rock and sub-rock bands nowadays. I was actually in a band for a year playing violin; it managed to add more depth to a tribute song for a fellow classmate than the power chords the two guitars were hammering out.
A musician with a good ear and a basic understanding of chords and chord progressions can also 'jam' to most songs, meaning just play some accompanying lines to the song first time hearing it. It's a good skill to have if/when playing with a praise and worship band.
Next music trivia question (again, chorus related): What outdated practice use to preserve the soprano voices of young boy singers? What were these boys called once subjected to this practice?

Are you planning on discussing castrati in a high school class? sweatdrop
Anyway, I'm a violist. I play in symphonic groups, but I like string quartets the best (particularly those by Shostakovich 4laugh ).

another string player?! gonk soooooo luckyyyyyy!! i wasnt able to play cello like i wanted, OR the violin, so im really envious of you guys! everytime i hear someone say that it makes me angrier at my school district for deciding we didnt need an orchestra emo stupid music department.... orchestras are awesome! (i prefer them over band XP playing the flute, i prefer to be in a woodwind quintet rather than a symphonic band) ~Rin
