User ImageThere was a warm wind blowing through the pridelands, the stars twinkling down happily on the earth. The tall grasses blew to and fro from the breeze, and a small form closed his eyes and smiled as the wind careessed his striking blue coat. Kialio was lounging on top of a large boulder, enjoying the night as he did whenever it was nice out.

The small blue cub had begun to notice patterns in the stars, and could point out different shapes. He didn't know anybody he could ask about the twinkling specks, so he began to make up stories in his mind about them. He was conjuring up yet another story as he watched them atop his rock.

The little cub glanced up at the dark sky as she slid from the comfort of the den. She couldn't sleep, and the warm bellies of her littermates only made her miss the dreams she couldn't grasp. Slipping from the blackness of the den into the darkness of an open sky, she sniffed the air before deeming it a good night to wander within sight of Pride Rock. She doubted she would find someone to talk to, but perhaps she would chance upon something to occupy her time and tire out her mind.

A boulder caught her eye and, figuring it a good a perch as any to take in the land, she approached it without thought. The fact that there was another cub already settled on it didn't cross her mind until she had breached the top and set her front paws on it's smooth surface. Ears swivelling forward, she blinked a few times in the dark before speaking, "Sorry, I didn' know anyone was here."

Lio looked over his shoulder at the disturbance, though when his eyes fell upon a cub he had never seen before, he found it a welcome disturbance. He smiled amiably at her, ears perked forward and orange eyes wide. "It's okay! Would you like to sit with me?" He asked, scooting over as he spoke to give her room to climb up. "I'm Kialio, but everyone calls me Lio. What's your name?" He tilted his head to the side as he spoke, never forgetting his manners.

Her scarlet eyes widened slightly in pleasure at the amicable greeting. Sometimes it grew tiring to be the one always offering a name, always asking the questions, and it felt good to not be the one prodding. "I would love to! Thanks." Hefting herself onto the boulder, she settled near to him with her tail curling around her paws gently. Careful to be turned slightly toward him without facing him completely, she glanced up at the stars before answering him, "Nice t'meet you, Lio. My name is Safuma, but everyone either calls me Saf or Safu." She nodded in greeting, dipping her head slightly in habit.

Lio smiled brightly back at her, glad to have some company. "It's very nice ta' meet you, too, Safu." He said with a nod in return. He looked up at the stars, orange eyes sparkling as he watched them. "Do you like to watch the stars, too?" He inquired, glancing back over to her. It sure was nice to meet someone new!

She looked up to the stars as he did, her smile never fading as she took in the multitude of pinprick lights. They were so many, and wonderful when all piled together. When he spoke again, her eyes darted to him before her whole face turned toward him, "I've never really done it. I usually sleep pretty well, but I couldn't tonight." She frowned in thought before adding, "I take it you do, though?"

Lio nodded enthusiastically. "Oh yes! I love them. I do this almost every night, unless it's cloudy or I was really tired." He smiled once more, then looked at her with a bit of a frown. "Why couldn't you sleep?" He asked, tilting his head to the side. "Did you have a bad dream? Or hear a scary noise? I hate it when that happens!" He shuddered, scrunching up his face a bit.

The little cub frowned, her scarlet eyes moving to search the stars once again. Her dream had hardly been a cub's nightmare, and the knot in her stomach told her that she should investigate. In her dream, she had lost something very, very special that was her own by right. She hadn't a clue what it was, but the loss made her heart heavy in the dream. When she awoke, it took awhile to shake the feeling and then it was no longer worth trying to sleep again, "Yeah, bad dream." At the other cub's exclamation, she turned to him and her broad smile returned easily, "Me too! That's neat you come out here all the time. I've seen the stars now and then, but I've never really stopped to look. They're pretty."

Lio watched her carefully for a moment, seeing the memory pass across her face. He was very aware and observant for a cub, always seeming to be wiser than his years. But he didn't press her about it. After all, it wasn't in his nature to be nosy, even though he was curious.

Returning her grin he looked up at the stars again, then pointed to a particular cluster above them, shaped like a lions head. "I like to make up stories for the different shapes I see in them. Kinda like cloud watching, but the stars are always there again the next night." He smiled brightly once more, setting his paw back down. "I imagined that one to be a great warrior, who gave his life to protect his family, and was honored by having his picture forever in the stars."

Her eyes followed his direction, looking up to the stars and easily finding the shape of a lion's head and great mane among them. She was glad he didn't pry, as she wasn't sure what to make of it just yet. Even so, she was glad to have lost some sleep if it meant meeting someone new. Smiling as he spoke, she nodded before speaking as well, "I see him. Does he have a name yet?"

Kialio shook his head, frowning a little. "I can't think of a good name for him." He said with a shrug. He then smiled over at her, "Do you know a good name?" He asked, his tail swishing behind him slightly in anticipation. He had been trying to find a good name for this majestic male for a long time.

Her tail moved against the rock, almost hitting his a number of times but in the true nature of cubs, she didn't notice. Her crimson eyes studied the constellation before she looked at Kialio thoughtfully, "You could name it after my grandda, Mufasa." She knew she had been named for the grandfather she had never met, her name as merely a more feminine jumble of the same letters. But knowing that Kialio had never met him either and had no reason to think of him, she quickly added, "Or you could name him after you. Maybe it'd be a kinda good luck charm."

Lio smiled and nodded, he had yet to hear of Mufasa, since he hadn't met many Pridelanders yet. "That's a great name! Mufasa it is." He said with a nod. He became a bit bashful, shaking his head. "I wouldn't name him after me, I don't think I could ever be as brave as that.."

Her smile broadened as she looked up at the lion in the stars. She had heard once that all the pride leaders of the past looked down on them from those stars, it was fitting that her lost grandfather would be up among them. When the other cub grew bashful, she turned her smile to him and giggled, "Oh sure you could. You come out by yourself every night, that's pretty brave and you're still a cub even." She nodded enthusiastically.

Kialio smiled brightly at her again, still bashful though. "Oh, it's not that brave... I mean, I'm not that far from my family, and the pridelands are pretty safe..." He rubbed his paws together, looking at the rock and smiling.
