If a guitar pickup is placed in a position its not recommended for, will it sound horrible?
For example, the dimebucker is recommended for the bridge position. Will it still sound alright in the neck?

It all depends on your taste. I think it would be a good rhythm pickup but not as good as a '59 in the neck position but I have yet to try the Dimebucker somewhere other than the bridge.

"losing it's tone" is something that pickups will do over time, but not by switching positions. A pickup that's built for the bridge will probably sound a little on the muddy side in the neck, and rest assured it will be loud since the bridge position of a guitar is quieter than the neck (just think about how a single string vibrates; really big in the middle, and very little close to the two fixed ends).
You can tell by looking at the tone sheet on the Seymour Duncan site what kind of sound it will produce in the bridge position, so experimenting with the neck position might be left up to you. There's no harm done unless you fry the pickup (really hard to do....).
