Hey. I was wondering, has anyone been in the Civil Air Patrol? My boyfriend was in it and he said it was pretty good thing to do. But I wanted other's opinions as well.
I originially wanted to do the United States Naval Sea Cadets BUT that is really kinda far away but the Civil Air Patrol closest to me is on Parvin Road (I am in KC, MO) But it is within walking distance.. about 10 minutes. So I mean it is a convient location and everything. What do you all think?

I am 15 right now. I am overweight so I mean I would need to lose a bit of weight before making any comitments or anything.

Well thanks for your alls time.

Bye

Have I been in the Civil Air Patrol, lol... only for five and half years hehe. I love it. I am 5 months away from becoming a Senior Member crying but I have loved the cadet program. You will learn so much that will help you in life and you will have a blast doing it. Granted not all of it is fun all the time, but if you take advantage of what CAP has to offer I can garuntee you won't be disappointed.

I joined a little before I turned 15 so don't worry if you seem older than a lot of other new cadets, its not a big deal and you can easily catch everyone else if rank if you try. Also, don't worry about your weight. I was the same way when I joined. Each promotion requires a PT test but it is easy at first so you will have time to work on it and improve over time.

I don't have time to write much more, but believe me I could go on forever. If you have any more questions just let me know. I hope I helped a little xd Have a great day!

i say yes. it has its flaws just like ANY other organization such as girl scouts [of which i am also a member]; boy scouts; sports teams; and other paramilitary organizations.

i have been a member of civil air patrol for almost 5 years. im mainly in it for the search and rescue aspect although now that i am of age i am looking to join a more professional SAR [search and rescue] team and have a couple choices.

its different than JROTC; Young Marines; or the USCG Auxiliary. we perform i believe its 95% of inland search and rescue missions in the states for the air force.

i am a Cadet/Chief Master Sgt. and working on getting my Mitchell [equal to 2nd LT as a cadet]. i am a Ground Team Leader; Mission Radio Operator; Flight line Marshaller; Mission Staff Assistant; and i will be working on Safety "Officer" at our basic encampment this year.

i believe that if one is interested in Civil Air Patrol then it is a great program. but if they are forced by their parents it not only limits the teen's ability to learn to make their own choices but also can put a strain on their psychological development.

no this stuff is not coming from a book, and im not trying to boast. just letting ya'll know what i think.

As a member of the Naval Sea Cadets, I have worked with CAP sense I joined the USNSCC and the local units around here I have found to be undisciplaned and just not offering alot to their cadets besides a few airshows and of course your yearly round of encampments. My friend is in it, and she says not only is it expensive but you do alot of book work.

Hm. Not sure where you get your info but it isn't expensive around here. I already talked to a few about the price and fees for events or whatever else. They have more than just a few airshows. Just because one or a few CAP units you see aren't "disciplined" how YOU think they should be, doesn't mean the rest aren't different and organized and disciplined.

Thank you for your opinion anyways.

Hey now, I was just stating my observations. It possibly is just the units around here that I have worked with. I have no problems with the program as a whole, just with the local units.

Besides, if your version of disciplane is blantent disrespect towards superior officers/higher ranking cadets, not following direct orders, fighting, and dishonesty then well...I would hate to see what your version of lacking disciplane is. And that comes as a high ranking cadet in both AFJROTC and the USNSCC.

Thanks everyone else for your thoughts.

- I am interested in it and am not being forced into anything.
- My mom has finally approved me to join an organization like this and so I want to jump at the oppertunity.
- I found out all the fees and there isn't many actually.
- They said my weight was fine as long as I can pass the PT with my physically strength. That is all that matters anyways.

"I say yes. it has its flaws just like ANY other organization such as girl scouts ; boy scouts; sports teams; and other paramilitary organizations."

I totally agree. Every organization has its flaws. But they can be improved with work on the flaw of course.

Well I think I will talk to my mom, boyfriend, and friends more about it and see what they think too. Then I will possibly join.

Any other opinions and thoughts are welcome. Thanks.

Sorry lol. But I have seen some of the USNSCC units in a state I visited recently, they were very un-organized, totally scatered. Yet a state right next to it has a very top leading unit that was very military like actually.

Some units in my opinion need better leaders who care about what happens and some just need teens who are actually commited to it and want to do it. Know what I mean?

Lets not get me started on my soap box as far as Sea Cadet units and what they need.

I worry about the program. I honestly do. The leaders..do whatever and barely follow regs in some cases. Teens..they are immature and who care very little about the program or anything for that matter or the effect of their actions on their units or the program as a whole.

I think the same is true in most youth organizations. Some units feel it worse than others. I see it in CAP someplaces now and in the past when I was in Girl Scouts it was there and when my brothers were in Boy Scouts it was there too.

CAP is definately a good program especially if you can find an extremely active one, the only problem i had with the program was that my local CAP station took 8 hours for each meeting and i didnt have time.

Thank you so much for that grossly unfair generalization about teenagers being immature and not caring. I am the polar opposite of that. Sorry to shoot you down, but that's completely unfair.

I honestly didn't mean to offend anyone with that remark. But the units that I have come into contact with that are for a lack of better word-lousy, you can usually look to the cadets who are in that unit and that is usually where the problem lays. Poor attendence, attitudes, judgement, not caring, being forced into the program, irresponsiblity all cause a unit to go south. The officers can only do so much-in the end, it really is the cadets program. Not all cadets in the unit may be like that, but it takes a majority to ruin it for a minority. As well as the opposite to that. It is no secret that there are teens in programs who are like that.

Its cool. Of course, I have a sort of edge because I go to a Military Academy for High School (not because I'm a 'troubled teen', but because I chose to go there so I could get a head start before entering the military), so I usually don't find myself being apathetic about this sort of stuff...I think I was also out of line for exploding like I did. Sorry 'bout that.
