Ah, Spring! It was a relief that the winter was finally over. It felt like it would never end. The occasional snow still fell, but instead of falling over cold packed dirt, it fell on soft green shoots of new growth. The plants were finally growing once more, and new leaves unfurled on the trees, filling the air with the sweet scent of… well… plants. That wasn’t all that filled the air, Talyn noticed. Anlach was finally here. It was her first Anlach as a hind, and it was a bit of a surprise. She was used to attracting attention due to her unusual coat coloration, but this was a very different sort of attention.

Even more surprising was the discovery that she liked all of the sudden attention from the stags and bucks. It was downright flattering, if a little overbearing, which was why she was, once again, at the edge of the herd. Since most of the hinds were towards the center of the herd, most of the stags had automatically gravitated towards the center as well. At least out here there was a little peace and quiet. And there was less confusion. Sure, she had always sort of idly enjoyed watching stags, but not like this! Not ardently watching them with something approaching adoration. Admiration was one thing, but adoration? That just wasn’t her.

She pawed the ground lightly, uprooting a few of those tender green shoots before she realized what she was doing. By Herne, she was flustered! This wasn’t the sort of thing that happened to her. It happened to silly hinds, the ones who arranged their entire lives around some stag. She wished her friend Aithne was around, but the gray hind had not seen the other hind for a few days now. She assumed that Aithne was off being courted by some young stag.

With a soft snort, Talyn shook her head and continued lipping at the plants, trying not to think about Anlach. It was too confusing to really think about. Best to ignore it for now.

He had attracted some attention earlier by being on of the first stags to begin sparring with others during this Anlach season. He had fought a coppery stags for the rights to a similarly colored hind he'd met some time before. He had won too. Brychan had also gravitated towards the edge of the herd and staked out a little plot in which to defend his starting harem. Loreena was somewhere abouts, and now Brychan was quietly moving around nearby, blue eyes seeking out any lovely hinds which were unclaimed or worth fighting for.

His tall antlers rose high into the air, several tines along the bow labeling him as a royal. His black pelt, speckled in white, was also a rather noticable traight of his. As well as the kind blue eyes which were a bit clouded from the effects of Anlach.

At the sound of approaching steps, Talyn lifted her head once more. It was hardly a surprise that it didn’t take her long to notice the star-spotted stag; the male had a way of attracting any hind’s attention, even one like Telyn, who was generally more interested in hearing stories from stags than anything else. Admittedly, she had taken notice of him before. Or, at least, she had taken notice of his antlers. As if anyone hadn’t…

Now, what was someone like him doing all the way out here? Talyn’s ears flicked lightly before pricking in the stag’s direction again. It didn’t sound like there were any other deer too close by. Somewhere, not too far, the familiar strains of antler against antler rang out as two stags fought over another particularly desirable hind.

Ah, of course. No doubt, the royal was out looking for more hinds to add to his harem. Almost---but not entirely---dismissing the thought from her mind entirely, Talyn went back to nibbling on the nearby plant life. Curious in spite of herself, her meandering steps took her a little bit closer to the starry-pelted stag.

It didn't take long for the stag to notice the grey dappled female that was by herself on the outskirts of the herd. Naturally the first thing he notice was her appearance, and he was quite intrigued. You didn't see many grey pelted hinds around, and truth be told... Brychan was of a rare color himself, its what made her stand out to him. Next he looked at her physique... she seemed healthy and robust, like she would give healthy young bucks. He then discovered that he was staring and shook his head a bit.

When she casually moved slightly in his direction, grazing... it was then that the stag decided to approach her. "I would think a hind such as yourself would be in the midst of the stags. Have you been claimed already?" he asked casually, towering proudly before the female and trying his best not to seem too forward or too much of a show off.

Oh Herne, he was talking to her! Quickly silencing the squealing voices inside of her skull, Talyn looked up as if she didn’t even realize he was there. Right. She had to stay calm, cool, and collected. Besides, she had a reputation to maintain as being slightly aloof, now didn’t she? As a matter of fact, she had no idea if she had a reputation to maintain or not, but it didn’t matter much. Right now, she didn’t want to seem too excited or too eager. Even if he had called her ‘pretty’… or, at least, insinuated as such.

“Well, you’re about as subtle as a flying tree trunk, now aren’t you?” Talyn said coolly, holding her head up high. She kept her voice amused, not at all annoyed. It was sort of cute, really, how obvious the stag was and how he tried to make it not-so-obvious. “You know, most stags introduce themselves before inquiring about harems. But, since you ask, no, I haven’t been claimed. My name is Talyn.”

Snarky? Well, yes, she was a little snarky… maybe that was part of the reason why she hadn’t been claimed. Not that personality was a huge thing with herla during Anlach anyway; most were more concerned with body and how suited a hind was to giving birth.

The stag looked amused at her words, realizing he had been caught although trying to make up for it. His lips moved in light laughter, like a horse nickering. "It was merely a question, not an invitation" the male trying to cover his tracks, but seemingly to no avail. He was getting to the introduction part.

Ears flipped forward and his dipped his head in a nod, "I am Brychan." Sure... he was looking for more hinds, but then... what stag wasn't? However, his gaze strayed from her for a moment as he caught eye of another stag making his way in their direction. After all... a hind that Brychan had his interest in.. must be a good one, right?

The dark stag barked and lept forward a few paces in a fake charge, his neck fur bristling in aggression. -HE- was talking to her, dammit. The stag, who nearly wet himself, took off in a bolt. He then turned back and was soon standing before Telyn once more, "Sorry about that."

“Now, when did I insinuate that it might be an invitation, hm? I never said that. I was merely pointing out things,” Talyn teased easily. That was sort of cute, the way that Brychan was trying to talk himself back out of it. Embarrassed? Now, why would he be embarrassed? The forward nature was appreciated, and a welcome change from the usual circuitous words.

If there was any doubt that Brychan was interested, it dissolved the moment that he chased off a potential rival stag. Talyn smirked a little to herself, inwardly pleased and squealy that she had not only attracted a stag, but one of the more highly sought stags like Brychan. A royal. Huh. Couldn’t get any better than that. And she hadn’t scared him off with her somewhat forward and snarky personality. That was just a plus, although, at this time of the year, just about any hind would do for some stags.

“Oh, no need to apologize; it was very rude of him to interrupt a conversation which has absolutely nothing to do with harems or claiming hinds or anything of the sort.” Alright, so she definitely was impressed with the way he had scared off the rival stag and made no attempts to hide it.

He's cute eh? That's good right? Well Brychan would think it was. He'd be tempted to go all rudolph, 'I'm cute! I'm cute! She said I'm cuuute!' .. but no... he was far too dignified for that! (A royal is a stag with a certain amount of points.. atleast 10 or so I think. Incause you didn't know. X3 ) But yes, she was certainly correct in that he was interested. "Oh I certainly agree" he replied, playing along with her a bit. The dark one grinned, taking a liking to this hind. She was intelligent, he could see that, and that certainly was a good thing in his mind. For him, it just wasn't about physical attraction and fitness, although that certainly did play a big part in it.

Brychan then paced around her in a circle, subtly... or maybe not so... showing off his physique and those large antlers of his. His tail flicking back and forth in excitement as he practicly strutted and pranced. "So.. if you're not claimed... Perhaps you would take harem life into consideration?" A grin working its way up onto his muzzle as he came to stand infront of her once more. "Hm?"

Once again, Brychan was delightfully plain in his interest, something that interested Talyn quite a bit. It was tiring, all this dancing around the issues. If someone was interested, she liked them to make their interest plain and known. It made life much easier for everyone involved. She kept an eye on him as he circled her, rather pleased with all the attention she was getting. Besides, he was, as she had said to herself earlier, pretty cute. Her tail swished slightly, a sure sign that she liked what she saw.

“Hmm…” she pretended to give the suggestion due consideration. “Well, it depends… this is your harem we’re talking about, yes? I don’t want to say ‘yes’, and then end up in someone else’s.” Oh. Well, that was blunt, now wasn’t it? Well, it seemed that being blunt was working this Anlach.

A stag that danced around the subject too much.. would lose any chance he had. Brychan had seen the shyer ones fail more often than not at getting a hind's attention and interest. Some of them growing bored before the fellows got to the point. Of course... they both knew what the stag was seeking, so why try to hide it? Although simply walking up to a hind and being all.. HEY.. I want U NOW doesn't really work either. There's that lovely little gray area.

Again, Brychan laughed at Telyn's comment. "Its my harem we're talking about, I assure you." Or well.. the beginnings of one anyway. You can't really call it a harem when there's a population of one, now can you?

Mostly, it was just the fact that Brychan had played along with her little game that had caught Talyn’s attention. The fact that he was attractive certainly helped. Also, the fact that no other stag had pursued her for this long helped as well.

“Hmm…” once again, she pretended to think about it, even though she had already come to her decision. Deciding to see how much he would like being circled, she briefly trotted around him, her tail flicking just as his had. Coming back to his front once more, she stopped and, once again, said, “Hmm…”

“It’s a tough choice, what with the absolute herd of stags waiting for my answer to that same question, Brychan. But… yes. I think I would indeed consider life in your harem.” Which was about as close to a ‘yes’ as Brychan would get. Of course, the fact that he almost certainly had fifteen other hinds in his harem didn’t deter her much; after all, it wasn’t as if she wanted to be the only one there or anything.
PostPosted: Tue Mar 13, 2007 9:23 pm

Oh the suspense! Brychan watched her as she circled him, his blue gaze never leaving the hind for an instant. It was quite the amusing display of courtship between the both of them. He knew that she was teasing him, and he liked it. Not all hinds were nearly as interesting as this one was proving to be. Brychan was convinced with each passing moment that he wanted Telyn in his harem.

A tough choice was it? Brychan flashed her a winning smile, ears turning forward once more when she gave the affirmative that... yes.. she did want to join his harem. He could leap for joy right there, but he would not. After all, he had to retain an air of masculinity and it certainly did not call for bounding and leaping.

"I am pleased to hear that" he eventually replied, dipping his head and moving forward to offer her a bump of his muzzle if she would allow it. The stag also moving to escort her to his little... area. Where they could talk further and he could introduce her to Loreena.

Talyn accepted the bump and returned it with her own affectionate gesture, figuring that Brychan wouldn’t really mind it. He seemed like the sort who would be happy to receive any type of affection from his hinds. It occurred to her that she didn’t really know Brychan, but that didn’t bother her unduly; if he turned out to be some sort of psychotic stag, she would have heard about it.

“Sooo… how many others are in it?” she asked, deciding that this was somewhat important to know. She completely expected the answer to be in the excesses of five or ten or maybe even fifteen… although, if there were that many, it would take far too much energy to get all of them pregnant. Or even just to attempt to get them all pregnant. She trotted at his side, feeling oddly excited at the prospect of being in someone’s harem. She had never done that before…

But, no! She couldn’t let him know that. For some reason, it seemed horrible to let him know that this was her first Anlach as a hind, to let him know that she was not… experienced. She had a hard time choosing between whether she wanted him to have a large harem or a small one: on one hand, she would get lots of time to herself, which she liked. On the other, she would get attention from him, which she also liked.
PostPosted: Tue Mar 13, 2007 10:07 pm

He did appreciate the bit of affection. This stag would take good care of his ladies. As far as having time to herself and time with him, she would possibly have some of both, for as he soon confirmed, his harem was rather small still.

"One other, her name is Loreena" Brychan informed her in a kindly tone, although laced with a bit of excitement at having acquired another hind. She could be sure that he would defend the both of them well. After that fight to win Loreena, there's likely not many stags that would challenge Brychan. Perhaps he was selective with his hinds, and that's why he only had a couple, but surely that number could grow eventually.

He didn't know this was her first Anlach, and he wouldn't have minded either. He's seen a number of them already, the tines on his antlers attesting to that.

“Loreena,” Talyn said thoughtfully, trying to remember whether or not she knew that particular hind. Since nothing stuck out at her, she assumed that she didn’t know this Loreena. Well, that was a bit of a relief; since they hadn’t met yet, they couldn’t possibly dislike one another at this point. Dislike would probably come later, since Talyn generally didn’t get along with hinds. Although, there was always the chance she would get along with Loreena. Hopefully, they could be friends. Maybe it was just a silly fawn-dream, but Talyn had always sort of hoped that, if she should end up in a harem, that she would be friends with the other hinds.

The fact that he had only one other hind made Talyn rather proud; of all the other hinds in the herd, he had chosen her? Her?! In your face, other hinds! In your little slender faces! That is what she would have done had there been other hinds around at the moment and if she had been the sort to do such a thing. Alright, so she was the sort to do such a thing… just not when she was trying to act calm, cool, and collected.

“I don’t think I know her yet.” But they would have to meet soon.
