Slayers (スレイヤーズ, Sureiyāzu?) is a successful and popular fantasy franchise. The franchise began as a series of fifteen light novels written by Hajime Kanzaka and later developed into several manga titles, three televised anime series, two three-episode Original Video Animations (OVAs), and five movies. It also spanned three role playing games for the Playstation. Slayers follows the adventures of the young sorceress Lina Inverse and her companions as they journey through their world. Using powerful magic and swordsmanship they battle overreaching wizards, demons seeking to destroy the world, dark lords, and the occasional hapless gang of bandits.

Although released after the anime series aired, the two OVAs and the first four movies depict events that occurred early in Lina's career as a bandit-hunting and dragon-spooking adventuress. These installments show her first encounter and subsequent exploits with her first partner, Naga the White Serpent. Naga, while not a great intellect, is a formidable sorceress in her own right, and views herself as Lina's strongest and foremost rival; these adventures take place before the events of the three television seasons. The first of the three seasons of the anime bore the franchise's title and established Lina's three principal companions:

Gourry (The swordsman)
Zelgadis (The chimera shaman-rogue)
Amelia (A young princess and warrior of justice)

The second season was titled Slayers NEXT, and the third season Slayers TRY. A fourth season, Slayers AGAIN, was rumored following the success of TRY, but early scheduling conflicts caused interest in the project to dissipate. Each anime series begins humorously but builds slowly until the fate of the world hangs in the balance. Throughout each series, Slayers maintains its comedic nature, frequently displaying Lina's ill temper or abuse of her comrades or lesser opponents, using these events as comic relief in later episodes. Use of extremely destructive spells in inappropriate settings, especially the powerful "Dragon Slave" spell, is another frequent gag.

Volumes one through six of the light novels have been translated into English and released in North America by Tokyopop. The anime aired on TV Tokyo from early April until late September for three years, 1995 through 1997, and was released on VHS and DVD in North America by Software Sculptors. In May 2005, at Anime Central in Chicago, FUNimation Entertainment announced they obtained the license for the TV series, since the previous owner's license expired in Fall 2005. It currently airs as part of the FUNimation programming block on CoLours TV. While the previous releases have now been out of print for over half a year, FUNimation has not yet released their own new productions, though they claim to still be working on them. The OVAs and movies were released in Japan between 1996 and 2001, later released in North America and dubbed into English by ADV Films. Enoki Films holds the license to The Slayers television franchise as a middleman.

Early life

Lina was born in a small village in Zefilia, the second daughter of merchants. Her parents owned what was in effect the town's general store, which helped build up Lina's love of food. Her elder sister, Luna Inverse, was the darling of both her parents and the town, excelling in martial studies and quickly beginning to make a name for herself.

At some point in her childhood, Lina concocted a plan which resulted in her deciding to seek a life abroad. Though it's unclear of her reasons (whether for profit or just childish mischief), Lina set up a magical device that projected an image over the entire town of her sister while she was in the bath. Luna's wrath was great, and Lina quickly fled from the town and has been terrified of even the mention of her sister ever since. (In Slayers Try, Lina built an entire pyramid complete with tunnels and a sarcophagus to hide from a letter sent by Luna.)

This was likely Lina's push to attend a prestigious magic academy... far away from home. Lina apparently did very well there, well enough to be assigned a color. In the world of Slayers, mages of great power or importance are awarded colors rather like titles, and most make a great deal of this, dressing in the color and introducing themselves with the full title. (Such as Rezo the Red Priest.) Lina, however, was completely embarrassed by the color she was awarded, and attempts to keep it a closely-guarded secret that her entire title is actually "Lina the Pink Sorceress".

Pre-Slayers TV Series

Chronologically in Lina's life, the events of most of the movies and manga take place in the period after Lina's early life and before the Slayers TV series began with her meeting Gourry Gabriev. (Generally, if any Slayers story, save for the very last movie, contains Naga the Serpent, it should be assumed to take place during this period.)

At some point after leaving the magic academy and beginning her travels, Lina became acquainted with Naga the Serpent, an eccentric and extremely busty sorceress with an ego that matched, or even exceeded, Lina's own. (Unbeknownst to Lina, the big-breasted Naga was also a disaffected princess from Seyruun, making her the first of two princesses from that royal family to annoy the spit out of her.) Naga eventually gained the nickname "Goldfish Poop", for the way that she followed Lina around, constantly insisting that Lina was her sidekick.

Despite their differences, the two actually worked rather well together... when not trying to kill each other. It's entirely possible that some very real affection existed between them, as Lina seems to treat her much like Gourry, like a nuisance, but a useful and not always entirely unwelcome nuisance. In their time together, they saved the world a number of times, and left an impression on a number of villages.

(Naga's presence, however, seems to have left less of an impression, despite being extremely tall, well-endowed, and scantily-clad. Many people are familiar with Lina, but no one ever inquires of her as to Naga's absence.)

It was at around this period in her life, either just before or during her association with Naga, that Lina earned her reputation as a Bandit Slayer, someone who tracks bandits and thieves and steals their ill-gotten gains for their own use. (Making her a somewhat questionable hero... on one side ridding the area of bandits, and on the other keeping stolen goods.)

Original Slayers TV Series

At some point between the manga and movies and the TV series (and the original novels) in Slayers chronology, Lina and Naga have apparently parted ways. Lina proceeds to meet a man of equally questionable intelligence but formidable martial skills, Gourry Gabriev, when he "saves" her from a gang of bandits Lina had injured the previous night.

Gourry soon reveals that he carries the Sword of Light (Hikari no Ken in Japanese), a powerful magical artifact that Lina greatly covets. She announces her intent to follow Gourry around until he gives it to her and proceeds to do so. Around this period, Lina proves just how truly formidable she is by killing a fragment of a Demon Lord, Shabranigdo, with a spell she herself came up with, called the Giga Slave.

Throughout her adventures involving Gourry, they are accompanied by a revolving band of adventurers including the chimera Zelgadis, Princess Amelia (Naga's sister, though this is not revealed until the very end of Slayers Try, and then only visually) and the priestess Sylphiel.

Slayers Next

This story arc, after a long battle with a clone of Rezo in which Lina very nearly dies (and Gourry flips out in a most spectacular fashion), introduces Xelloss and his machinations (along with further insight on the mazoku). He appears first as a priest of a local temple offering information on the Clair Bible. Lina is interested both as a sorceress and a treasure hunter, while Zelgadis wants the Bible to see if there's a cure for his condition. All too soon, though, it becomes clear that Xelloss is simply using all of them as pawns, although they don't discover to what end because he always ends most discussions with his catchphrase, "That is a secret!" Eventually, the group get caught up in a power struggle between Maryuuou Gaav and Hellmaster Phibrizzo. Lina, temporarily deprived of her magic, eventually gains access to the Ragna Blade. She also discovers the true source of the Giga Slave as the Lord of Nightmares and vows to never use it again. Unfortunately for her, Phibrizzo is just as determined to have her cast it. In the final episodes of this arc, Lina does indeed use the Giga Slave at the cost of her own existence, but Gourry dives into the Sea of Chaos to rescue her, and they share a passionate kiss (which both seem to forget after they emerge).

Slayers Try

In this arc of Lina's story, she is recruited by the dragoness Filia ul Copt to save the world. (Filia originally wanted Luna Inverse for the task, but Luna was busy with her restaurant and fobbed the task off on Lina.) Reluctant to put herself in harm's way to save a world that is typically extremely ungrateful of her efforts, but nevertheless terrified of her sister, Lina sets off on the task.

During this time, Gourry lost the Sword of Light, meaning that theoretically, Lina now has no real reason to continue her association with him. However, she continues to do so in all facets of the Slayers universe, both novels and the following movie.

Differences Between Versions

Lina has varied only a little in her various incarnations, her general character not greatly changing between the novels, anime, and manga in which she appears.

In the novels, her hair is generally described as chestnut-colored, and her clothes are described as being more typical to a D&D magic user, including a cloak embroidered in silver with numerous mystical symbols, and fairly muted colors such as blue and white. (The original Slayers novels are based around a Dungeons & Dragons campaign.) In the Slayers anime, Lina's outfit was shifted to that of a more typical anime adventurer, with a fairly simple outfit of brighter colors such as red and yellow, with emphasis on the pauldrons at her shoulders, which were mentioned in text descriptions but downplayed in early illustrations of the character; her hair was also changed to a bright, vibrant, orange-tinged red color. A running gag in the anime is that Lina is embarrassed of her small bust.

The manga differs as to which outfit she wears, and she has been seen in both. The manga often holds to an even more slapstick style of comedy than the anime, more likely to feature chibi versions of Lina and the others. Lina, in keeping with this style, is often more over-the-top in her exclamations and actions than in the anime, and fires off explosive spells with even greater alacrity and even less serious effect. In the manga featuring herself and Naga, Lina is over-the-top but still fairly close to her anime self; the short run of manga featuring Gourry, however, often borderlined on the surreal, with brief and unexplained tangents into completely nonsensical humor that can nowadays be seen in American shows such as Spongebob Squarepants and Fairly Oddparents.

Other Linas

Several different versions of Lina populate the Slayers world itself, due to various plots.

In one story in the manga, Lina and Naga are exposed to a mirror that creates an exact opposite of whoever looks in it. The user expects this to produce an evil and violent version of the two that would be only too happy to work for him and destroy the originals. However, what comes out of the mirror are a Lina and Naga that are sweet, kind, generous, and extremely concerned about the feelings of each other and everyone around them. Lina and Naga state that the mirror's true power must be to dissuade people "with sheer disgust". In their attempts to break the spell (and the mirror), the two actually wind up creating dozens of similar copies of themselves, which go on to found an entire village full of philanthropic Lina and Naga dopplegangers. A slightly adapted version of this story, which resulted in the mirror being destroyed without creating more than the initial doppelgangers, was used for one of the Slayers OAVs, commonly titled "Explosion Array" (after one translation of a spell in Lina's arsenal).

Early in the first Slayers TV series, Gourry and Lina are both the subject of an attempt at cloning, which spawns a number of miniature, chibi versions of them both. The chibi clones fight to humorous effect, and after the mini Linas win, they all disintegrate.

Another, slightly more successful "evil" clone of Lina was also created.

Relationships

It is heavily implied to the point of outright statement that Lina and Gourry fall in love at some point as the series progresses. The final climax of Slayers Next, the second season of the Slayers TV series, the two characters share a kiss. Though they can not later recall the incident, Gourry and Lina both only remember that something important had happened between them. During the final movie, Gourry appears to tell Lina "I love you", but this is in fact the effect of a spell causing him to speak in the language of octopuses. He is, in fact, saying "I cannot pay you back for this." At the end of Slayers Try, the third season, the two are featured walking off into the sunset together.

Lina has also been the object of affection of various people, both men and women. Young, well-off men have proposed to Lina for numerous reasons, be it her looks, her reputation, or ulterior motives, and in many cases Lina has fully intended to follow through with the relationship in the name of pure greed.

In fandom, Lina sees a much wider variety of pairings and relationships. One strong preference of fans is for Lina and Zelgadis as a couple, as they are both more serious magic users who desire great power. Lina and Xelloss are also a favorite in this vein, as it is believed by some that Xelloss' amoral nature and the sheer power he wields would be attractive to someone of Lina's temperament.

Lina and Naga is probably the largest lesbian "shipping" among the fandom, as the two are without other adventurers for most of their travels together, and their antagonistic behavior while still working together is a standard by which many fans base such pairings.

Other Suppositions & Rumors

Various other tidbits about Lina make their rounds around the internet, and are hotly debated amongst fans.

Chief among them is the idea that Lina may have deific power contained within her. Some say that she may be a Knight or Avatar of a deity, much as her sister is a Knight of Ceipheed; which deity it may be is unsure, but the primary guess is that it may be the Lord of Nightmares herself, which is why Lina can call upon her power to perform the Giga Slave. Other theories are that, like Rezo, Lina has inside her a part of the evil god Shabranigdo, explaining her red eyes, and her extreme handiness with the spell that calls upon his power, the Dragon Slave... her signature spell.

A rumor has long circulated that Lina may be over 500 years old, and merely keeps herself looking young through some magical art. This rumor is false, and is based on a misinterpreted phrase Lina says at one point. In the novels, Lina states outright that she is fifteen, and then several novels later points out that she is sixteen, as she had a birthday "just like everyone else".

Notes

Lina Inverse is a playable hero in the famous map of Warcraft III The Frozen Throne, DotA Allstars.

For some unexplained reason, Lina is absolutely terrified of slugs, though many fans speculate that it was due to Luna punishing Lina in some manner using slugs, after the younger Inverse sister displayed Luna's naked image during her bath.

Summary

Lina is the main protagonist and the only character that appears in all incarnations of Slayers. She is a young but very powerful sorceress, with a great love of money, food, and casting fireballs at people with very little provocation. She has an older sister, Luna, who is a powerful swordswoman. Although Lina has faced down dragons, monsters, and even a Dark Lord with little fear, the mere mention of Luna's name sends her into terrified hysterics. She also suffers from a fear of slugs.

In the first episode, she introduces herself by destroying a gang of bandits known as the Dragon Fangs. She steals a large portion of their treasure, then sets off towards the nearest town to cash it in for a sizeable profit. On the way to the town she is ambushed by the remainder of the Dragon Fangs. However, mere seconds before she would have blasted them to bits, Gourry Gabriev valiantly comes to her "rescue" and they begin their adventures together. Lina and Gourry do fall in love, but acting on these feelings is an entirely different story.

Lina has many different nicknames, one of them being "Dragon Spooker", a name that she isn't too fond of. (This isn't quite correct, but it's how it is translated. The kanji stands for "Dragons step past out of sheer revulsion"; the /spoo/ syllable is correct, but /s*r/ was changed to /k*r/ to translate better into English.) This is rumored to have appeared because of an incident in the first episode, in which the Leader of the Dragon Fangs’ pet black dragon escapes. Just when it appears that the beast is going to crush Lina (and Gourry, who was knocked out on top of her in a ... compromising position), it blanches in disgust and steps over her, a blush along its snout, much to her shock, and thereafter rage. However, the nickname was mentioned before the black dragon met her, thus leading to a possible earlier incident.

Another nickname Lina encounters is the "Dragon Nester." This comes from a rhyme: "Little girl with little breasts, scares the dragon from its nest." This takes off from a running gag, in which characters constantly comment on the small size of Lina's breasts. She generally takes offense to these comments, and often responds with violence. This nickname, though not the breast jokes, only appears in the English dub. The breast jokes start when she first meets Gourry.

In Slayers Try, Gourry, Amelia and Zelgadis find out that Lina has an elder sister named Luna. Luna is a skilled and powerful warrior, who later retired and became a waitress in Lina's hometown. When Lina refused to accompany Filia on her quest, Filia handed Lina a letter from Luna that said, "Shut up and do it!", prompting Lina to cower in fear.

Biography

Very little is known about Gourry's family and past, except that he mentioned a brother and a grandmother. Gourry is on bad terms with his brother. He stole the Sword of Light and ran away from home when he was 17 to stop the fighting over the sword. He was a mercenary for the next five years and nearly threw away the Sword of Light when he grew frustrated with the weapon. A short story, "The Things that He Sees Beyond the Point of His Sword" that was published in the 21st Slayers Special novel, details his inner struggle and his change of heart. Gourry is stopped by a traveling fisherman, who convinces Gourry to do something worthwhile with the sword. This man, unknown to Gourry, is Lina Inverse's father. Days later, he meets Lina herself.

Gourry is first seen when Lina is having a conflict with the surviving members of the Dragon's Fang gang (she had previously blown up the majority of their band, killing their leader, and took a fair chunk of their treasure for herself). Believing Lina to be a "babe, a luscious damsel in distress", Gourry steps in and warns the bandits to leave her alone or else they'll have to deal with him in what Lina calls a "battle of the cliché men" (in the original Japanese language version). The bandits decide to attack him instead and a violent fight breaks loose, with Gourry demolishing the bandits and sending one running away without any clothes on. When Gourry discovers that Lina is not the beautiful maiden he had thought but merely a small, under developed teenager - he actually thinks she's a little girl - he displays a vain, shallow streak of disappointment, much to the embarrassment and humiliation of Lina, who wasn't even in any danger, given her powers as a sorceress. This superficiality is a stark contrast to the behavior Gourry displays throughout the rest of the series, in which he is basically a nice guy, albeit a ridiculously dense one. Assuming that Lina is a lost little girl, he offers to escort her home when her real objective is to get to Atlas City, but she plays along with his misconception and, upon hearing that her goal is to reach Atlas City, he vows to escort her there at any cost. Along the way Gourry shifts gears into the more familiar nice guy mode that would define him for the remainder of the series.

Gourry remains Lina's closest, most consistent companion throughout the series, traveling with her even when their other two friends, Zelgadis and Amelia, are off somewhere else, though Lina claims she only lets him tag along because she wants his family heirloom, the legendary Sword of Light. Despite her frustrations with Gourry's lack of mental agility, his habit of bluntly reminding her of her small breasts, among his other blunt observations, as well as his tendency to try to eat more food than her, which she often expresses quite violently, usually smacking him in the head or shooting him with a nasty but not permanently damaging spell, Lina eventually falls in love with him, and he apparently falls in love with her, though the relationship never blossoms fully within either the manga or the anime (they shared a kiss at the end of Slayers Next when he came to rescue her from the Lord of Nightmares, but they didn't remember it afterwards). This is partly because Lina, as a zesty, whimsical but not fully emotionally matured teenager, is not adept at expressing tender, affectionate feelings.

Personality & Controversy

One of the biggest areas of dispute regarding Gourry's ancestry centers around the original Slayers motion picture. In the movie, Rowdy Gabriev is established as Gourry's ancestor - most likely his grandfather. This has led fans to believe that the elf princess Meiroon, who Rowdy has a crush on, is Gourry's grandmother. Hajime Kanzaka has struck down this notion, saying in the BLASTER! fan magazine that by the time Rowdy was old enough to marry and have children that Meiroon would had still been a child herself. So Rowdy married a human causing his grandson, Gourry, to be fully human instead of part-elf as commonly believed in fandom.

While Gourry is basically a nice guy, with a calm, mellow demeanor that serves as a foil to Lina's fiery temper tantrums, he is also characterized by his lack of intelligence and his tendency to put things bluntly without any tact, occasionally hurting the feelings of others or humiliating his friends, namely Lina, without meaning to. He is also, arguably, the least developed of the Slayers characters, serving more as comic relief even within a series that is already primarily a comedy to begin with. Conflicts and arguments have waged for years in the Slayers fan base regarding the relative pros and cons of Gourry's mental handicap, with some reading him as an outright jerk while disregarding his more positive qualities. Fans have argued that he really does not deserve Lina's love and that Lina should instead be with Zelgadis, who possesses a more serious personality and has garnered more popularity than Gourry has, even though the writers dropped hints that the only female character Zelgadis harbors any romantic feelings for is Amelia, his polar opposite in terms of temperament, much as Gourry is the polar opposite of Lina. Some have even suggested that he should be with Amelia or perhaps Sylphiel, a mellow, sweet natured cleric who is shown to be infatuated with him, much to Lina's aggravation and jealousy, but his feelings towards her are not entirely clear: he doesn't seem to be in love with her, but he also seems to care about her on some level. In any case, his comically absurd stupidity has rubbed a number of fans the wrong way, finding him more annoying than funny, but Gourry also has his share of fans and defenders.

Some fans have suggested that Gourry may suffer from Attention Deficit Disorder as a means of explaining his stupidity, usually as a defense for his blissfully out of it attitude. Though his intelligence in most every day things is severely lacking, he is an incredible swordsman, performing extremely well against both regular and supernatural foes in the heat of battle. He also often shows excellent skills of observation, intuition, and is a good judge of character, though sometimes it comes a bit late to be of any good. To sum him up best would be to say that he is an idiot savant, possessing a great deal of intellect in one particularly narrow region of talent. While Gourry may not be the smartest of characters, his ignorance is purposefully beneficial to helping the audience understand what is going on. The other three main characters are well educated and have knowledge regarding the cosmology and history of the world which is assumed everyone in the world would know. Since Gourry, however, does not know or remember these facts, it forces the other three to verbalize these facts, which allows for the audience to learn what is assumed to be well known.

To his credit, Gourry is extremely loyal to his friends and allies and has displayed a great deal of patience with Lina and her tantrums. The only time his own patience is questioned is when he doesn't have access to food, much like Lina, as they both share a great passion for fine cooking. Another notable occasion where his temperament was strained is when he was led to believe that Lina was dead in order to deceive the enemy; for which, for the first time ever in the series he whacks Lina in the head in way of admonishment for worrying him (in which Lina, bashfully and uncharacteristically, apologizes). He is one of the few characters in the series capable of eating as much as Lina, though Gourry is considerably larger than she is.

Skills

On occasion he has displayed limited degrees of superhuman strength/stamina and a great deal of acrobatic prowess, in stark contrast to his companions, Lina Inverse, Zelgadis Greywords and Amelia Wil Tesla Seyruun, who rely more on their magic while Gourry himself is not a magic user. Due to his constant exposure and sometimes being the receiving end of many of Lina's, Zel's, and sometimes Amelia's spells, Gourry has developed a rather high toleration to magical attacks and damage in general.

While he is handy with any blunt object, Gourry's biggest contribution to a fight is his swordsmanship. Not only does Gourry reveal himself to be a nearly invincible swordsman, he reveals himself to be the owner of the Sword of Light, a legendary weapon which, when not possessing a metal blade, produces a blade of pure energy, which Gourry and others can summon by shouting "Light come forth!". The energy blade, which functions very much like a lightsaber from the Star Wars series, can cut through almost anything and even absorb then release magic spells against his enemies, though some spells, such as the Ragna Blade, are too powerful even for the Sword of Light to absorb. His swordsmanship is downplayed as the series progresses in favor of the magic, but one occasion when he was placed under a spell and turned against his comrades he proved to be nigh unbeatable. The Sword of Light is supposed to channel the willpower of the wielder which would explain his enhanced power when under mind control as his will would have been reinforced by the one controlling him. The sword was later revealed to be not a weapon of light, but a weapon more closer to the mazoku, owned by Dark Star.

Summary

Gourry is a wandering swordsman who meets up with Lina in the first episode of the television series. He accompanies her from then on. He carries the fabled Sword of Light, originally known as Goru Nova before it came to the Slayers world.

Gourry is somewhat less than scholarly, but his skills as a swordsman are nearly unrivaled throughout the series. At first, he appears to be a shallow man only willing to fight for his own gain — which is why he "saved" Lina from the bandits, hoping for a damsel in distress. But when he insists on becoming Lina's unpaid bodyguard, and they slowly get to know one another, Gourry's kindness, loyalty and consideration for others becomes clear. He unknowingly annoys Lina when he calls her a little girl in mockery of her underdeveloped breasts, which becomes a running gag in the series.

While Gourry is deadly with plain steel, he is incredibly powerful when armed with his family's magic blade. He is the keeper of the Sword of Light, a mystic weapon whose steel blade can be detached, allowing the use of an alternate blade made of pure, destructive light at the incantation, "Light, come forth!". Gourry takes great care of the Sword of Light, and watches it especially carefully to protect the valuable relic from thieving hands, including those of Lina herself. She often tries to trick him into giving it to her, but she never succeeds. These are one of the few times where Gourry's less than astute memory is crystal clear.

At the end of the third series, Gourry gives up the Sword of Light so that it and the other light weapons can be protected. In the following book series, he acquires the legendary Blast Sword. Manipulating the magical energies around it, the Blast Sword creates an extremely sharp blade. If not treated with care, it can slice through its sheath, and will sink up to its hilt into the ground below. An enchantment placed on it by the party allows them to change its sharpness to be useful again.

Gourry eventually falls in love with Lina. He is, however, less averse to the notion than the young sorceress.

Naga the Serpent (Japanese: 白蛇のナーガ; also Nahga the White Serpent) is a character in the novel, movie, OVA and manga versions of Slayers. Her Japanese voice actress is Maria Kawamura (川村万梨阿), and her English voice actress is Kelly Manison.

It is believed that Naga is really Gracia Ul Naga Saillune (Japanese: グレイシア=ウル=ナーガ=セイルーン), the older sister of Amelia Wit Tesla Sailune. She is the self-proclaimed rival and traveling companion of Lina Inverse. While not a friend of Lina, she wasn't exactly an enemy, even though she often took sides opposite of the red-haired sorceress. Naga's exact age is not known, but it is assumed that she is around 19 or 20 during the time Slayers Special took place, making her several years older than Lina. Naga is also extremely busty and takes great pride in the superiority of said endowments over Lina.

Overview

Because Naga did not appear in any of the TV series (The Slayers, Slayers Next and Slayers Try), she has not been written up in the Ultimate Fan Guides role-playing supplements for the series by Guardians of Order, unusually for such a major character in the Slayers mythos. This is because GoOrder only possess the rights to the TV series, and Naga is strictly an OVA and Movie character. The license is set to expire soon so it is unknown if she will be added if the game is picked up by another company. However, Naga did briefly appear in the Slayers Premium movie, employed as "the octopus sorceress" to go against Lina.

Naga is a tall and overly-buxom woman who wore a leather bikini-like garment, and have a laugh that could cause whole towns to evacuate just to get away from the sound of it. However, Naga took pride with her laughter, and may take offense at those whose laughter was not like hers. Naga also has an aversion to the sight of blood, and would faint if someone was slightly scratched. Like Lina, Naga is proficent in many spells, especially healing spells and golem-forming spells.

There are eleven copies of Naga running around the world. Ten of them are just like her, minus the fact that they don't possess any of her memories or magic skills, and the other does have her skills, but has a complete opposite personality (a whiny, extremely modest girl).

Biography

Naga's real full name is Gracia Ul Naga Saillune, making her the first daughter of Crown Prince Philionel El Di Saillune and the older sister of Amelia Wil Tesla Saillune. She has one living uncle, Christopher Wil Brogg Saillune, one deceased uncle, Randy Saillune, and a deceased cousin, Alfred Saillune. Her grandfather, Eldoran Saillune, is the king of Saillune, although Philionel acts as a proxy ruler.

Naga's mother was murdered before her own eyes several years ago by the famous assassin Booley, and as a result, Naga slayed her mother's killer with the crown princess' original spell, Chaos String. After the funeral, Naga found the outfit she currently wears inside her mother's closet, and shortly after this, she left home in order to learn the ways of the world. Contrary to popular belief, Naga still keeps in touch with her hometown, and occasionally she will be sent money through a messenger.

Being a princess, Naga knows when to be graceful, and when to be self-confident. She does not flaunt that fact that she is royalty (her heritage is never mentioned in any series and has only been acknowledged in informal discussions), but the way she acts makes it quite apparent. When she stands before other members of royalty, she speaks to them as equals, while Lina will bow her head and speak only when spoken to. Many of her confident poses and speeches are strikingly similar to those of Amelia or Martina Zoana Mel Navratilova, another princess (now queen). To her dismay, Naga is often referred to as Lina's sidekick or "that other girl."

Abilities

Naga is very skilled in white magic, no doubt because of where she grew up. Lina is often surprised when Naga uses these spells, because Naga does not seem like the kind of person to want to heal people. During the Slayers Special OAV, she shocked Lina by using the Flow Break spell to stop some magically animated suits of armour. The Flow Break spell is a high-level white magic spell, which Lina did not think Naga would be capable of. Naga also specializes in shamanistic magic, especially spells of the earth and water variety. She enjoys creating her own golems (even if they usually don't turn out very well), and one of her favorite spells to use is Freeze Arrow.

Another of Naga's skills is to terrorize people with her obnoxious laughing. She's extremely proud of her highly developed, self-confident laugh and the effect that it has on unsuspecting people. She also likes to use her body to tease or distract men who are trying to go against her.

Naga carries a large sword, but she never uses it, as she is afraid of blood. This phobia was most likely caused by witnessing her mother's brutal slaughter.

Relationships

The only Slayers character Naga really interacts with is Lina. Naga proclaims herself to be Lina's strongest and foremost rival, and this annoys Lina to no end. Nevertheless, these two will often work together despite their differences, and when they do, they are a great team.

Amelia and Naga never meet in any of the various Slayers media. In the first season of Slayers, episode 17, Question? He's proposing to THAT girl?, a woman with Naga's distinctive build and outfit walks in front of the disguised Amelia, Gourry, and Lina; Amelia appears to do a double-take. In the Slayers video games, Naga met the rest of the TV cast, but not Amelia. In Slayers Premium, Amelia was blasted off shortly before Naga's appearance. However, there was one time when they did meet; in Slayers VS Orphen. Naga was wearing a mask that hid her face, and Amelia began to ask Naga a question, but Naga interrupted and told Amelia she was a friend of Lina's.

Summary

A buxom sorceress with an obnoxious laugh (similar to Ayeka's in Tenchi Muyo! and Kodachi's in Ranma ½) who is Lina's partner in the movies and OVAs.

Naga was often found hanging around Lina Inverse during Lina's earlier adventures, but the two had later parted company under unknown circumstances. During the time that they were together, whenever Naga was around, she was either working together with Lina or against her, all the while irritating the red-headed sorceress to no end.

Naga claims she is Lina's only serious rival. Lina calls her "goldfish feces" — as in, she trails after Lina. Like Lina, she has a massive appetite and is an excessive alcoholic. She is extremely well-endowed, much to Lina's disgust and jealousy, and wears very little clothing.

It is rumored and hinted at throughout the different Slayers series that Naga is really the daughter of Prince Philionel El Di Saillune, and the oldest sister to Amelia Wil Tesla Saillune. However, despite the hinting, it was never confirmed until the creator, Hajime Kanzaka, revealed in an interview that Naga is indeed the lost heir of the Saillune family.

Naga appeared specifically in the OAV’s and movies, however there is a debatable cameo appearance by her in the first season of the TV series midway through (during a crowd scene, several people walked in from of the 'camera' including a shapely lower torso that bore an uncanny resemblance to Naga's design, though the long trailing hair was red so it may have been an homage. Amelia notices the character during the brief scene.

Biography

Originally an ordinary human being, Zelgadis was the great grandson of Rezo the Red Priest, (Though due to a translation mistake, he is often mistakenly referred to as either grandson and/or great grandson) a well-respected blind wizard who did good deeds for the people while being secretly tormented by his blindness and his obsession to find a way to restore the sight he'd never had. As a youth, Zelgadis wanted to be the most powerful being of all, so Rezo answered his desire by turning Zelgadis into a chimera - 1/3 human, 1/3 golem and 1/3 demon. It was later discovered that Rezo's blind eyes were housing the dark lord Shabranigdo, and that the dark lord's presence in Rezo's body might have driven him mad and forced him into doing things like cursing Zelgadis.

In the series, Zelgadis is first seen trying to acquire the Philosopher Stone with the help of his servants Zolf and Rodimus, which brings him into conflict with Lina Inverse and Gourry Gabriev when they happen to acquire it first, albeit by accident (it was in with the treasure Lina had stolen from the Dragon Fangs gang). Rezo is also after the stone, albeit for different reasons (Zelgadis hopes to use it to either destroy Rezo or to change himself back into a regular human). After fighting with one another in addition to fighting Rezo's minions, Zelgadis joins forces with Lina and Gourry to thwart Lord Shabranigdo when the dark lord is released from Rezo's eyes. After that, Zelgadis initially goes off on his own, but when a bounty is placed on his head by Eris, another of Rezo's followers, Zelgadis once again joins forces with Lina and Gourry and also their new companion Princess Amelia Wil Tesla Seyruun, this time to thwart not only Eris but also her clone of Rezo (Copy Rezo as they call him).

Throughout the rest of the series, especially in the NEXT series, Zelgadis's main goal is to reverse his condition, thus he seeks out various objects and spell books of magical importance in hopes that he can use it to cure himself.

Personality

Zelgadis is notable for his determination, focus, and strength of will, as well as his obsession with regaining his human form. He is quiet, distant and aloof, very much a lone wolf type. At times he tries to act on his own or leave the group in order to stay focused on his goal when they are either being oblivious to his needs or are just goofing around. He is also the straight man of the group and sometimes the one who either has to be the peace maker or the one who has to calm Lina down in order to get her to think rationally. He can be very commanding and adept at getting people to do what he either wants or needs them to do in order to accomplish the objective at hands, very much an ends-justifies-the-means person. At the same time, he becomes frustrated very easily, especially when his comrades are incapable of focusing themselves long enough to either solve the problem at hand or solve his own.

Another notable aspect of Zelgadis is his arrogance - a highly skilled shaman magic user, Zelgadis is good and he knows it. His confidence and self-assurance often borders on arrogance, but for the most part he has the goods to back it up. He also frequently behaves in a selfish, almost holier-than-thou manner, as if the suffering of others does not even begin to compare with his own, and frequently puts his own needs before his friends. This is most likely another factor in his reactions to the absurdity that surrounds him.

Though he gradually warms up to his friends, and develops a soft spot for Amelia, Zelgadis still maintains a quiet, droll disposition.

Popularity & Controversies

Zelgadis, or Zel to fans, is far and away one of the most popular characters of the Slayers series, beloved by fans for his demeanor, his personal problems, and his voice actors (Hikaru Midorikawa in the original Japanese version, and Crispin Freeman, who did the second English voice for Zelgadis in the English dub). Fans argue that he is the darkest, most complex and most intriguing of the four central characters.

An offshoot of his popularity is the controversy surrounding his love life. The series never officially pairs him with anyone, thus leaving his romantic life ambiguous. While the series hints at Zelgadis and Amelia having feelings for each other, some fans have proposed the alternative of Zelgadis and Lina, seeing the more obviously talented sorceress as a better match for him. This has led to some flamewars, with a significant amount of venom aimed at Amelia.

Appearance & Powers

While the third of him that is human maintains his original human form/figure, the two thirds of him that are golem and demon changed the appearance of his skin and hair considerably. The demon half of his being gives him blue skin and the wiry, silver/bluish-purple/violet hair (depending on whether you're reading the manga or watching the anime) and possibly the pointed ears, enables him run faster than the eye can see, and granted him great power in Shamanist magic while the golemn half outlines him with rock and stone. Though he often complains about his freakish appearance, the stone hide has proved useful to him on many occasions, as the stone hide is virtually impenetrable to ordinary weapons such as swords or bombs - he commented early on that nothing short of the Sword of Light would hurt him - while the combination of stone and demon stamina most likely was the only thing that allowed him to endure being struck down repeatedly by Gaav, one blow of which actually caused him to bleed.

On the other hand, the stone hide makes him extremely heavy - so heavy in fact that he was used as an anchor when the gang was seeking a lake dragon that was key to a very special cuisine.

Physically he is much shorter than Gourry, presumably of average height, with a very slight physical build.

Zelgadis is a Shamanist magic user, and also a durable swordsman in his own right. He can perform black attack magic, healing spells, and the Ra Tilt. He is also adept at safecracking and lock-picking for reasons he'd rather not explain in detail when asked.

Summary

Zelgadis is a sorcerer who begins the TV series as a mercenary, opposed to Lina, but ends up in Lina and Gourry's group. He is a chimera made of rock golem, blue demon, and human.

Zelgadis Greywords tends to become something of an enigma to his comrades, due to his quiet and antisocial nature. As a boy, he was transformed by Rezo, the red priest — who is either or both his grandfather and great-grandfather (the translation is unclear and differs) — into a three-part chimera. One third is golem, one third is human, and the last third is brau-demon (a being neither demon nor mazoku). The golem third turned him into stone, and no sword but the Sword of Light can hurt him, making Zelgadis nearly unstoppable in a physical fight. The demon third enables him run faster than the eye can see, and granted him great power in Shamanist magic. The human third was simply a remnant of the old Zelgadis, before Rezo changed him.

Zelgadis specializes in Shamanistic magic, which pulls its power from the Astral, or spiritual, plane. His elemental spells are formidable, and include Stone Spiker, a modified version of Ray Wing, and his trump card, the mighty Ra-Tilt. Though he is not as learned in the art as Lina, Zelgadis's even combination of physical brunt and magical finesse render him among the most fearsome of mortal warriors.

Zelgadis travels with Lina because he wants to find a spell that can change him back into a human. Despite the incredible abilities bestowed upon him by Rezo in the transformation, he always views the change as a curse, and wishes more than anything to be rid of it and return to a normal life. His unofficial alias is "the heartless sorcerer swordsman", which he accepts with a smirk. Amelia seems to have a crush on him, and he seems feel the same way about her, though he refuses to admit it, even to himself.

Amelia Wil Tesla Seyruun (アメリア・ウィル・テスラ・セイルーン, Ameria Uiru Tesura Seirūn?) (sometimes spelled as "Ameria" and "Saillune"), is a fictional character from the Slayers manga, light novels and anime series. She is a short, bouncy, bubbly princess who's always ready, willing, and happy to help those who need it, but despite her young age, her breasts are already much more developed than Lina's, much to the latter's aggravation. Amelia's Japanese voice actress is Masami Suzuki.

Biography

It is described in the story that Princess Amelia is the youngest daughter of Crown Prince Philionel of Seyruun, the Ultimate Pacifist who, for the most part, benevolently rules over the Kingdom of Seyruun, one of the largest white magic using kingdoms of the Slayers universe. Her mother was murdered when she was very young, and the incident reportedly traumatized her older sister, the Crown Princess Gracia, so badly that she ran away from home, while Amelia herself vowed never to use swords in combat (though she did use the Sword of Light once in order to channel the Ra Tilt). A running gag throughout the series is that Amelia looks nothing like her dad, and that Phil looks like a giant dwarf. According to Amelia, tall height runs in her family, and that her older sister was almost as tall as Gourry, which would suggest that Amelia herself, though very small, has not yet stopped growing. According to Amelia, her older sister was "scary" and had a maniacal laugh; it is rumored and hinted at all throughout the different Slayers series that Amelia's long lost sister is actually Naga, the White Serpent (Lina's primary partner in the OAV).

Amelia is first introduced looking for her father when he goes on a secret mission with his brother, Amelia's Uncle Prince Randy, to root out an evil sorcerer who is threatening their kingdom (unaware that it is part of a plot by Randy to overthrow Phil and take the throne for himself), which brings her first into contact with Gourry Gabriev - who was briefly taking a break from Lina Inverse, as she was waiting to meet Prince Phil without knowing that he was not the boyishly handsome figure that she imagined him to be - when she helps a traveler who is being robbed by a bandit; when her initial passionate speech about justice does not work and she is insulted by the bandit, Amelia strikes the bandit down with a spell and then knocks him into the river. Gourry agrees to help Amelia look for her dad, though her zealousness regarding the distribution of justice leaves him at a loss for words. Later they catch up with Lina and Phil when they confront Randy and his partner in crime. Since neither Phil nor Amelia have any money to pay Lina and Gourry for their services, they decide to join their group and escort the fiery sorceress and idiot savant swordsman to Seyruun and then pay them once they have returned to the castle. Along the way Amelia tries to get Lina to teach her the Dragon Slave, in the interest of using it to spread justice of course, much to Lina's annoyance, until Lina makes it very clear that the Dragon Slave is not a toy, so to speak. When they finally get to Seyruun, it turns out that there is a price on Lina and Gourry (and also Zelgadis Greywords), which sends Amelia into a frenzy of moral outrage and she tries to arrest them herself, or at lest with the help of the various bounty hunters and "warriors of justice", and eventually succeeds in helping Zangulus and Vrumugun, the minions of Eris and the Rezo clone. When Lina & Gourry escape, Amelia gets caught in the crossfire and confronts Lina again about her misdeeds, and Lina tries to force Amelia to confront the fact that she is not seeing the bad guys for who they are, which Amelia tries to resolve by blasting them both with a giant fireball, assuming that the real heroes will survive simply because they are the heroes. When Lina and Gourry manage to survive the explosion, Amelia is convinced, albeit for the wrong reasons, that they are innocent and then offers to travel with them to help clear their names - and also because Phil is mad at her for destroying one of Seyruun's buildings. This later brings Amelia into contact with Zelgadis, with whom she slowly develops strong feelings for.

Like Gourry, Amelia often finds herself on the wrong end of Lina's anger, but over time Amelia stands up to Lina more when she thinks that Lina is wrong. Despite their extremely different personalities, Lina and Amelia develop a surrogate big sister/little sister relationship.

In NEXT Amelia is dispatched by her father to the kingdom Xoana as an emissary of peace, but she was captured and held prisoner, but was "rescued" by Lina, who happened to be in Xoana with the intention of seeing its book to see if it held anything particularly important within its contents (it did not - at least, not for her anyway). Later, Amelia and her friends are caught up in another conspiracy to assassinate her father, which turns out to involve Gaav the Demon Dragon King, who has rebelled against the Monster Race, and later involving the dark lord Phibrizzo.

In TRY Amelia is shown as having risen to more prominence within her kingdom, commanding a whole battalion of magic users when necessary.

Personality

Amelia is initially presented as basically a well meaning but slightly scatter-brained little kid who really cannot tell the good guys from the bad guys. She has a tendency to contradict herself; early she states that it is wrong to judge by appearances, but when she first meets Zelgadis she assumes that there is something not Kosher about him because of his freakish appearance (it should be noted that in the manga she was much more friendly towards him when they first met). On the other hand, Amelia is a kind hearted, compassionate person who does her best to support and encourage her friends, even when they are not especially encouraging of her. She is notable for her obsession with spreading justice, a trait she inherited from her father, who taught her all that she knows regarding justice. This could be part of her way of dealing with the loss of her mother and the disappearance of her older sister.

It is interesting to note that Amelia frequently displays personality traits that are prominent in her friends. On occasion Amelia has shown a passion and zest similar to Lina's (especially for food), sometimes slow-witted like Gourry (though due more to naivety than lack of intelligence), and intensely focused like Zelgadis, albeit to reduced degrees. While she never completely loses her innocent personality, she does change over the course of her adventures with Lina.

Another notable habit of Amelia's is her tendency to address those who are older than her as either "Miss" or "Mr.", even when the person in question is only a year older than her like Lina.

Lastly, Amelia has an affinity for high places, roofs or statue points where she can make a dramatic entrance and deliver a rousing, justice themed speech. This is usually followed by a descent and an ignoble face-first landing. The anime hints that she has feelings for Zelgadis.

Skills

Amelia is a white magic user with a fair amount of skill in shamanism and black magic as well. She calls the Ra Tilt her "killer spell". Outside of her magical abilities, Amelia is well versed in aspects of court life and diplomacy. In a physical fight, Amelia is a decent boxer, but her lack of agility makes her an easy target for a more skilled opponent.

Summary

Amelia is a young cleric and the princess of Saillune with an unwavering belief in justice. She joins Lina's group during the first TV series.

Wherever there's a crime, you'll find Amelia tripping close behind. She’s a helpful little princess who's always either in the way or flat on her face (or in a headlock from Lina). She initially comes across as a very dense little kid who really can't tell the good guys from the bad guys. Although Lina was often annoyed with Amelia for her wide-eyed naiveté, desire to learn the Dragon Slave, and larger bust size (despite the fact that Amelia is younger), eventually Lina comes to accept her as a friend. Most of Amelia's lessons in justice came from her father Prince Philionel of Seyruun, the "ultimate pacifist" armed with a variety of oxymoronic but very effective attacks, whom Lina once mistook for a bandit. It is rumored that Naga the White Serpent might be Amelia's long-lost older sister, the crown princess Gracia (this rumor was later confirmed by Hajime Kanzaka during an interview). After the murder of her mother, Amelia has vowed never to use blades, but once used the Sword of Light to channel the Ra-Tilt. Amelia seems to have a crush on Zelgadis.

Sylphiel Nels Rada (シルフィール・ネルス・ラーダ, Shirufīru Nerusu Rāda?)
Sylphiel is a lovely young cleric who knew Gourry before she met Lina and the others. She became infatuated with Gourry to the point where, in the English translation for the anime, she refers to him as "Dear Gourry" or "Gourry Dear." Gourry only remembers her for her good cooking. While she is weak in shamanism and black magic (her attack spells are especially unimpressive), her skills in white magic (healing and protection) are impressive. This is mainly due to her profession as a Shrine Maiden.

Surprisingly, she also manages to get the hang of Lina's signature spell, the Dragon Slave. Strangely enough, Sylphiel's Dragon Slave appears to be as strong, if not stronger than Lina's talisman boosted Dragon Slave. Her only other offensive spell, Flare Arrow, is pathetically slow, weak and shaped like a carrot or beet as a joke. She joins the group for the end of the first series and again near the end of the second series. She does not appear in Slayers TRY (her position being somewhat usurped by Fillia) except in an eyecatch.

Series Information
First Episode Appearance: Slayers TRY Episode 1 (Season 3)
Voice Actor: Tara Jayne
Seiyu: Houko Kuwashima

Biography

Filia was a priestess of the first holy order under Flarelord. She obeyed the orders of the elders at her temple, and as a result, she had a rather naïve and biased view of the world. Until she began traveling with Lina Inverse's party, Filia did not know of the barbaric acts of violence her race took part in around the time of the Kōma War. Near the end of Slayers Try, she gave up her priestess position, and by the time the whole Dark Star Dugradigdu ordeal was over, she found that she was the last remaining follower of Flarelord, the rest of her clan having been destroyed.

Appearance

Being a dragon, Filia has two bodies- her original golden dragon form, and the form we see most often, the young human woman. She can transform between these at will, but she does not enjoy transforming to dragon in front of other people, as it requires her to shed all her clothing in the process. Her dragon form is extremely large, and when she is in human form, she keeps her original weight and her tail, which pops out when she becomes angry or startled. She says that this is because she has yet to perfect her transformations. Even in human form, Filia retains her dragon magic and skills, such as holy spells and the ability to teleport herself and others over fairly long distances. She also carries a large mace on a garter belt attached to her leg; Lina has tried to lift it but could not hold it up.

Filia is the only main character (a permanent member of the traveling party) to not come from the manga/novels. She is original to the anime, as the third season was not based directly on events from the manga.

Personality

Being a Golden Dragon, she has a huge sense of honor and is dedicated to "fulfulling her duties to the temple." She is annoyed to great extents by any monster who crosses her path. She carries a large mace (affectionately dubbed Mace-sama) in her garter, and uses it to end many of her arguments. Filia originally wanted Lina's big sister Luna to accompany her on her quest, but Luna retired and suggested Lina as a replacement.

Epilogue

Filia, at the end of Slayers Try, accepts the egg of the reborn Valgaav in repentance of what her ancestors did to his kind. She then opens a vase and mace shop with the glowing see-through egg nestled in a warm basket with Gravos and Jillas as her assistants.

Relationships

Out of all the characters, Filia is closest to Lina. They are good friends, even though they occasionally irritate each other. Filia became acquainted with Lina's sister, Luna Inverse, when she asked the Knight of Ceifeed to help her stop the impending doom. Instead of helping, Luna sent Filia to Lina, and the rest is history. Filia does not like how Lina and the others tend to forget about their responsibilities when a good meal or the opportunity to make money comes along.

Filia always felt sympathy for Valgarv. After all, it was her race who slaughtered his. She accepted his hatred and contempt for her, and she wanted nothing more than for him to be content with himself and the world. In the end of Slayers Try, he was reborn as a pure ancient dragon, and she became his caretaker.

Filia is the only being capable of truly making Xellos angry. Even when he sometimes tries to be polite to her she continues to insult him and call him names like Raw Garbage (namagomi). Sometimes when he teases or infuriates her she delivers a sharp blow to his astral head with her heavy Mace-sama, though he never seems to try to escape it. Filia's hatred towards Xellos comes from the fact that he killed nearly a thousand dragons during the Kõma Wars 1000 years ago, although he claims that he was only following orders. However, by the end of the series they learn to tolerate each other, and are capable of having at least one decent conversation and of enjoying a cup of tea in the same room. Summary

Filia made her first appearance in Slayers Try. She is a Priestess of the Fire Dragon King. Being a Golden Dragon, she has a huge sense of honor and is dedicated to "fulfilling her duties to the temple." She is annoyed to great extents by any monster that crosses her path. She carries a large mace (affectionately dubbed Mace-sama) in her garter, and uses it to end many of her arguments. Filia originally wanted Lina's big sister Luna to accompany her on her quest, but Luna retired and suggested Lina as a replacement.

Filia, at the end of Slayers Try, accepts the egg of the reborn Valgaav in repentance of what her ancestors did to his kind. In the ending credits, you see the glowing see-through egg nestled in a warm basket with Filia yelling something at Gravos and Jillas while they are polishing her pottery.

Ages (Rough estimates):
Third Series: Unknown (Presumed to be a few hundred years). In her human form, she appears to be in her early 20s.

Biography

During the Resurrection War, in order to prevent the intervention of the Shinzoku and Ryuzoku four of the five Mazoku Lords created a barrier around the northern part of the continent. This kept the Dragons and Shinzoku out, but also prevented the lords from moving too far. In order so that they could still act with impunity in the world, all the Mazoku lords except one created generals and a priests, mostly one of each. The exception was Greater Beast Zelas-Metallium, who put all the power into one being, Xellos instead. Still, he only holds the title of a priest.

Xellos played a major part in the Resurrection War. While Chaos Dragon Gaav and Shabranigdo (who was controlling Lei Magnus's body) fought with Aqualord Ragradia, Xellos completely annhilated a clan of Dragons with a simple wave of the finger. Until the events of Slayers NEXT, Xellos' mission was to find and destroy the manuscripts of the Claire Bible, a task which he worked on for a thousand years.

Like all extremely powerful Mazoku, Xellos prefers to take a Human form in order to lull others into a false sense of security. He chooses to mimic a human to the extent that he can actually bleed to further this illusion. His true Mazoku form is that of an inverted black cone, which can split into many smaller ones to attack an opponent.

Slayers NEXT

Under the orders of Hellmaster Phibrizzo, Xellos followed Lina sometimes helping, but often hampering her quest to find the Claire Bible. During this time he hides under the guise of a traveling priest, though he is revealed to be a Mazoku in the later episodes of the series.

In the climatic showdown with Chaos Dragon Gaav in the last episodes of Slayers NEXT, Xellos defends Lina and Co. from the attacks of Seigramm and Gaav, though taking a grevious wound in the process.

Slayers TRY

As Valgaav tries to summon Dark Star to the world of Ruby Eye, his mission this time is to stop this, bringing Valgaav back to the Mazoku's side if possible. In the end, he helps Lina and co. to fight Valgaav and stop Dark Star from being released into their world.

Personality

Xellos tends to behave like a playful trickster, answering nearly all questions directed toward him with "Sore wa himitsu desu," literally "That is a secret." He seems to delight in the frustration that ensues with his withholding of information. For the majority of the second season, Xellos acts simply for comedy's sake frequently breaking the fourth wall and addressing the viewers; all the while subtly and even sinisterly advancing the plot.

Generally, Xellos' mood can be determined by the state of his eyes. If they are closed, he is acting as the "Trickster Priest," but when he opens them he brings forth the Mazoku.

Xellos' true intentions always seem to be a mystery. Although as a mazoku his main goal is to return the universe into the nothingness of the Sea of Chaos, near the end of the series he aids Lina and the others in saving the world. Even though he tends to manipulate Lina and the others he has saved their lives on few occasions, such as saving Martina Zoana Mel Navratilova from bandits for no apparent reason, and saving Filia during their battle with Valgaav. The reasons for doing so are never given which leads Xellos to be one of the many enigmas of the series.

Xellos is extremely loyal to Zelas Metallium and usually acts only if ordered, (although at times he has aided Lina's group without having been ordered by Zelas) and it is assumed that he would gladly follow any of her requests in order to keep her pleased, even if he is not pleased with them himself.

Relationships

In the novels, the Slayers group generally abhors his presence, while in the anime he is treated as more of a tolerable nuisance.

In the anime, Xellos and Lina seem to have a sort of mutual respect for each other. He seems to enjoy the chaos that follows Lina, and follows her for the sake of fun even if he is not ordered to do so. In the novels Xellos seems to be more distant around her, looking somewhat troubled by the fact that Lina, unlike other humans he has dealt with, is able to see the bigger picture of things and is not tricked so easily.

Zelgadis holds a powerful hatred towards the Mazoku because he had destroyed a Claire Bible manuscript which, the chimera thought, might have contained the cure to his appearance; this naturally does not bother Xellos one bit. In fact, he is the only one who does not tease Zelgadis about his appearance.

When Amelia makes one of her heroic, "justice filled" speeches Xellos listens with amusement and mild curiosity, although they do tend to disturb him at times. When she makes endless comments about how beautiful and wondrous the world and life are Xellos becomes extremely weakened, and even cringes at her minor comments.

Filia is the only being capable of truly making Xellos angry. Even though he tries to be polite to her, she continues to insult him and call him names like Raw Garbage (namagomi). Her hatred towards him comes from the fact that he killed many dragons during the Kõma Wars 1000 years ago. By the end of the series, they learn to tolerate each other and are capable of having at least one decent conversation. Although they do not consider themselves friends, they are a popular pairing among some Slayers fans since their behavior is very similar to that of other anime love/hate couples such as the pairings in Ranma ½ and Love Hina.

Powers

Xellos is widely considered to be the most powerful Mazoku under the five lords. As such he is nearly immune to all Black Magic, only the spells that call upon Shaburnigdo or the Lords can even phase him; however, he is vulnerable to spells that use the power of the Lord of Nightmares, though given his speed it is unlikely that he would allow someone to cast the spell against him.

Immensely powerful, Xellos is capable of annhilating nearly anything using his own power. This is best shown by his destruction of an entire clan of Golden Dragons. However, he tends to underestimate his opponents, leading to himself getting beaten severely by Valgaav.

Like all Mazoku, Xellos can teleport anywhere he can imagine by phasing to and from the Astral Side.

Summary

Xellos is a high level Mazoku (see Universe section below), who is thousands of years old. Xellos currently serves as priest and general for Beast master Zelas-Metallium. Zelas-Metallium herself is one of the 5 highest ranking Mazoku who were created by Shabranigdo, and she in turn created Xellos. Xellos temporarily served under Hell master Phibrizzo in his attempt to destroy Gaav the Demon Dragon King. Gaav stated that Xellos was given power beyond any Mazoku, leading to the fact that Xellos is above all other Mazoku, with the exception of the Shabranigdo's retainers, and of course, the Dark Lord himself. Dragons fear Xellos and see him as their mortal enemy after he killed half the population during The War of Monster Fall. In the 6th Slayers novel (Vezendi's Shadow), Xellos says his full name is Xelloss Metallium. He is also known as Beast master Xellos, "trickster priest" (by many, including himself) and "namagomi" ("raw garbage" by Filia) or simply Xellos. He is a hindrance as much as a help to Lina and her friends. He gets what he wants in the easiest way; even if it means tricking his friends, though he is not above aiding or betraying anyone as long as it furthers the goals of himself or the others of the Monster race. His trademark response to any important question is, "Sore wa himitsu desu!" (Literally: "That is a secret!"). A constant duel goes on between fans whether there is a love or hate, or even a love-hate relationship between Xellos and Filia. First appears in Slayers NEXT.

Martina Zoana Mel Navratilova (マルチナ・ゾアナ・メル・ナブラチョア, Maruchina Zoana Meru Naburachoa?)

Martina, along with her father, plotted to capture Amelia. Lina, along with Gourry and Zelgadis, saved Amelia then used the Dragon Slave to destroy Martina's castle and the surrounding town. Enraged, Martina ran off and learned magic so that she could take revenge on Lina. Later, Martina joins forces with Lina and company. Martina is fickle in her love affairs, obsessed with whatever man she happens to see first that day. At the beginning of the series she is hung up on Zelgadis, but her interests switch to Gourry and even Xellos as the series progresses. She is obsessed with her Lord Zoamelgustar, a monster god she made up, but might actually exist.

She is usually a comic foil for the other characters. However any serious scenes she plays are for the purpose to emphasize an important or dramatic moment in the story.

While she has practically no powers, she does seem adept at curses (even though they seem to backfire on her). She even cursed Lina so that any damage she inflicted would be returned to her. She also worships a dark Monster God, not even Xellos or any other Monster antagonists have heard of named Zoamelgustar (Xellos: "Never heard of him...). However at one point she summons his power and is able to generate a shield far greater than one that Lina or any of the other spell casters could muster.

This may have been her own innate power, but it's actually Aqua, a dragon god they've met along the way to a Claire Bible. She faces down the final enemy in the last episode, showing that she is an ally and, in a way a friend of the regular cast, including Lina. When Hellmaster Phibrizo kills her during the final battle, Martina uses her last moments to encourage Lina to keep fighting and save Gourry. She eventually marries Zangulus in a fake backdrop church, as her hometown is still rebuilding after Lina's Dragon Slave.

Voices: Mifuyu Hiiragi (Japanese), Rachael Lillis (English), Valérie Nosrée (French), Diana Perez (Latin American), Claudia Nieto (Castilian Spanish), Katrin Fröhlich (German), Mezei Kitty (Hungarian), Mi-Yeon Jeong (Korean, SBS), Hyeon-Jin Lee (Korean, Tooniverse)
