Semper sat in a small bar on the outskirts of town nursing his drink with a small frown on his face. A girl walked up to the bar and sat beside him. "Hello" said the girl, but Semper didn't notice. After a few moments silence the girl got up and walked away, her heels clicking on the ground. The whole time Semper just stared out of the window, the stars were beautiful. Just then he saw a star streak across the sky. Semper smiled, closed his eyes and made a wish. What he asked for he'd never tell, but if you looked at him you could tell that it was "Something better than this"


Semper stood up and placed a few bills on the counter to cover his drink and a handsome tip. He grabbed his coat and ran outside, he'd always been one to believe in miracles.

Semper wandered through the town in the twilight looking up at the peaceful sky.

He tried to count the stars, like he had many years previous. He remembered the long nights under the stars he had spent with Jane, just laying under the stars. They each would lay there not saying a word because at that point no word had been left unsaid, no wine untasted, Yeah, he remembered those days the ones that lasted forever yet seemingly only a few seconds.

They had loved each other, they had been engaged, they had been so many things. Before her accident.

Semper blinked and shook his head uttering a small, sad sigh. It had been a long time since then. A long, lonely time.

Just then he walked into a lamp post and fell to the ground out cold. A small sign was posted on the lamp post which read "Roommate wanted"

Maybe this is what he had been looking for all those years after Jane's death. A sign. A reason to move on. A reason to fall (quite literally) and fall in love.

After a few hours Semper awoke with a groan. There was a huge black and blue mark from where he had walked into the poll, and there must've been a rock on the ground where he had fallen because there was a huge gash in his cheek. "Well, that's my luck" he thought slowly trying to get up his head felt like it had been smashed against a wall, which wasn't very far off from what had actually happened.

He slowly got to his feet and stumbled a little, holding onto the lamppost for support. His face was pale and he could barely stand, in other words in no shape to walk back to his small dingy apartment. Not tonight anyway. So he stumbled to the doorway of an apartment building and fell into the buttons that paged the rooms, accidentally giving most of it's inhabitants a nasty midnight wake up call.

Realizing what he had done he tried to stand up straight, but no no avail. He stumbled to the other wall and waited for someone to answer.

To his astonishment someone answered. The voice was a girls, quiet and sweet. "I didn't stumble around that much.." he said to himself "Did I?" He laughed a small laugh.

Semper leaned against the the wall feeling his cheek where the stone had cut him and winced. He leaned over and held the call button in. "You wouldn't happen to have a bed for the night, would you?" he asked kindly.

Semper waited for a few seconds at the door. Looking patiently up the steps. Then he saw a girl run down the steps. She looked younger then him but she was dazzling.

"Hello" he said in the kindest, most unhurt voice he could muster when she opened the door.

Semper felt odd being helped up the stairs, but however much the gentleman inside of him screamed in protest he knew that he couldn't have possibly made it up the stairs alone.

"I'm Semper" he said upon being asked his name, in a low, embarrassed voice. "And you are?"
