I was looking at wikipedia for a research paper on african american influence on fairy tales and I came across this and I just had to share it

because this is a very big first in a predominantly european/eurocentric place: disney

The first disney princess to be black
PostPosted: Sun Mar 11, 2007 7:32 pm

Yea, I'm not too excited about it, nor am I really surprised or impressed by it, actually...

I mean, I can't really force myself to say, "Yay, Disney," for doing something they could have done years and years ago but just didn't. neutral

We have yet to know if this film is going to be any good, or if it will just be to "shut people up." "See??! There, dammit! We have a black one now, are ya happy?! Now stop marching outside my door! s**t!" xd

It's too soon to say if this "first black Disney princess" will make any impact at all as far as influencing young black girls goes. I mean, the other 6 "princesses" have been around for years. Most little girls want to be princesses, period; they don't necessarily care that their little Disney tea and play sets all feature white characters. Also, many black girls still may prefer the "original princesses" to this new black princess...

That's really cool, but I wonder what she'll look like.

It's going to really tick me off if they make her in a caricature style.

Wow...that's a little overkill, isn't it...? "Animals?" neutral But...people do tend to try to interpret the hell out of Disney movies.

I have to say its about time; this should have been done a long time ago, ideally in the 1990's when 2D animation was better accepted. This movie will revieve much attention from the media in a year or so, and hopefully it can live up to the hype.

i think it's good that they've finally included a princess of african descent, but i'm not overjoyed about it. i'm gonna wait and see if the movie is any good.

the only good thing i can say is that it'll make a lot of black girls happy. if their parents are anything like mine [black dolls only, which were few and far between], they'll finally get a cool disney character to play with. wink

it's not the first, they interpret cinderella as an african amercan beauty if you've seen the movie with brandy. it's not even the first animated one, the princess and the pauper has an african princes(and pauper) voiced by raven symone

I like the idea and all that but one thing bothers me. I'm not against interracial relationships or anything, so I'm going to try to word this carefully. The closest thing to a Prince in this story is a Caucasian man. So the first Black Disney Princess ends up with a White guy?

I can't say I'm too happy about it. Yes, Disney's making an attempt to include blacks in their exclusive Disney princesses club but is the film showing the true culture of blacks? It takes place in the south of the US, during the Jazz times, when it was socially acceptable to treat blacks like scum of the earth. Almost every Disney movie takes place in each person's place of ethnic origin. By setting the film in America they're saying blacks have no history/culture/significance besides being imported slaves (although she's not a slave in the movie). I heard she may not get a prince. Why not? Every other princess had a prince to love. To me, it's like they're saying black women aren't lovable. And she was supposed to turn into a FROG? Why an undeniably ugly creature? There are MANY other fairy tales they could have used. Apparently, Disney changed this as soon as people on the Internet began complaining.

Anyway, I know Disney has affected my views of beauty and love as a child, and I used to agonize over not being as pretty as the others or not "right" (since there was no black princess to relate to). I'm worried that this film won't get black girls a princess to relate to, but that it will make them feel ugly and desperately wishing they didn't look like her. It depends how the film goes.
