Sethur scanned the bookshelf, occasionally removing a book and flipping through it. One would've thought that, with the freakishly large amount of stuff that was crammed in every space imaginable in his house, stuff that ranged from arcane-looking books in odd languages to tacky souvenir things, he would have something as commonplace as a Hindi-English dictionary.

But logic was defiant, and so he and Niyati wound up in a bookstore. With a snort of irritation (or was it amusement?) he took his findings over to one of the squishy armchairs that were arranged in a corner and collapsed into the nearest one, allowing the small Indian girl to clamber onto his lap before he started looking through the books in more depth.

The bookstore amazed Niyati. Never before had she seen such a large amount of nothing but books in one place! She had cautiously wandered through the shelves (though never letting her guardian out of her site) and looked at the shelves upon shelves of books in awe.

Now if only she could read them....

In hindsight, bringing Cheshire to a book store could, potentially, have been diasterious.

After all, what was a book except a load of paper with text printed on it stuffed between a binding?

Yet, surprisingly, when they'd stepped into the bookstore and Chao had let her youngest son down, the Passenger hadn't proceeded to decimate the bookstore. Instead, he'd simply begun poking around with obvious curiosity and had touched the spines of the nearest books with care, rather than devious intent.

With a sigh of relief Chao began to search around a mindlessly, looking for a title to jump out at her and indicate that it was a good read and always keeping one eye on Cheshire to make sure he didn't wander off.

Niyati looked from the pages of the dictionary (Oh how frustrating it was to only understand half!) at the sound of an opening door. With an almost uncharacteristic surge of confidence, she slid out of the chair onto the floor, and headed towards the front of the building. Her steps were no longer punctuated by the sounds of her belled anklets, for she had taken them off earlier, so her feet made little sound on the floor.

She peered around the edge of a bookshelf, and upon seeing Chao and Cheshire, let out a small squeak and hurried back to Sethur, who was watching her short journey with a small smile.

Cheshire perked at the curious sound of a squeak. Looking away from the book whose title he'd been tracing the lettering of on the spine, puzzling out the name.

Wandering to the edge of the bookshelf he caught sight of Niyati's retreating back and grinned. She was the same size as him! But why was she moving away? Maybe she hadn't seen him.

"'Lo!"
he called warmly, waving towards the girl.

Chao watched with half an eye, smiled at the unfolding scene, and turned back to the book she'd pulled off the shelf to read the exert on the front cover.

Oh! Niyati paused in her tracks and tuned around with a wide-eyed expression. But manners surpass shyness. "Namaste." she said quietly, with her palms pressed together in front of her.

How she hoped this would go well! Cheshire didn't look big, bad, or scary...But one never knows until it's too late. Well, it never hurt to be nice, in any case. And with that hought, she smiled timidly, peering at Chesh curiously.

Namaste...? Cheshire tilted his head to the side, taking in the new word curiously and mouthing it to himself. He didn't have a clue what it meant, but it was pretty! And, moreover, the other girl had stopped and was even smiling now, maybe that meant she wanted to be friends?

Grinning warmly he approached the girl, scrounging up the manners his mother had taught him, "nice to meet you," he said slowly, making sure not to trip up and ruin the words for the pretty speaking girl in front of him. Smiling once they were out he peered at her, "m'Cheshire, who you?"

Her smile widened as Cheshire introduced himself. Yay! he was nice! But now to introduce herself. Furrowing her brow slightly, she dredged up the bits and pieces of this new language that she picked up over the last few days.

"Aah...hello! I..am Niyati," she said haltingly, but with a glimmer of triumph in her eyes. "Nice to meet you?"
Hey, she was starting to get the hang of this!

Cheshire blinked at the slightly halted speech, curious about the contrast between it and the word she'd spoken so smoothly earlier. He forgot all about his curiosity as Niyati gave him her name and smiled warmly at her.

"Niyati," he hummed the syllables of her name appreciatively, "Niyati has a very pretty name," he noted with a firm nod, before tilting his head to the side, "Niyati wanna play?"

Smiles! Smiles were always good! And, and, and, she knew some of those words! Play! Fairly beaming with the idea that she could do this, she nodded in response, glancing over her shoulder at her guardian who seemed to be engrossed in his book. "Play....what?" Her knowledge on games was slightly limited, but she'd try her best.
