    What is a Banshee?

Wikipedia describes the Banshee as the following:

The Banshee, from the Irish bean sí ("woman of the sídhe" or "woman of the fairy mound") is a female spirit in Irish mythology, usually seen as an omen of death and a messenger from the Otherworld. Her Scottish counterpart is the Bean Nighe ("washer-woman").

The sídhe are variously believed to be the survivals of pre-Christian Gaelic deities, spirits of nature, or the ancestors. Some Theosophists and Celtic Christians have also referred to the sídhe as "fallen angels". They are commonly referred to in English as "fairies", and the banshee can also be described as a "fairy woman".

Banshee's and the Five Great Gaelic Families.

Traditionally, when a citizen of an Irish village died, a woman would sing a lament at their funeral. These women singers are sometimes referred to as "keeners". Legend has it that, for five great Gaelic families: the O'Gradys, the O'Neills, the O'Briens, the O'Connors, and the Kavanaghs, the lament would be sung by a fairy woman; having foresight, she would appear before the death and keen. When several banshees appeared at once, it indicated the death of someone great or holy. The tales sometimes recounted that the woman, though called a fairy, was a ghost, often of a specific murdered woman, or a woman who died in childbirth.

Banshees are frequently described as dressed in white or grey, and often having long, fair hair which they brush with a silver comb. Other stories portray banshees as dressed in green, red or black with a grey cloak.

The wail of the Banshee is a peculiarly mournful sound that resembles the melancholy sound of the hollow wind, and having the tone of the human voice, and is distinctly audible at a great distance.

She is usually presented as a small though beautiful maiden, dressed in the fashion of Ireland's early ages who, with her mournful and melancholy cry, bewails the misfortune about to fall on the family she loves.

It has been stated by some writers that the Banshee was actuated by a feeling inimic to the person lamented. This, however was not the opinion of the people of an earlier day in Ireland.

Their belief was that the Banshee was the friend of the family she followed, that she at one period enjoyed life and walked the earth in the light and shadow of loveliness and immortality.

The very fact of the unearthly creatures always crying their sweet, sad song of sorrow at some misfortune bears this out, for if otherwise than a friend, why should her song not be one of rejoicing instead of lamentation? When the caoine of the Banshee was heard in the vicinity of the house of any old Gaelic family, it was at once felt that misfortune or death awaited some member of it.

Instances have been quoted of every member of a family having been in vigorous health when the cry of the Banshee was first heard, but before a week had elapsed someone had been accidentally drowned or killed or had met sudden death in some fashion.

It is well to remember that the Banshee belongs exclusively to the Celtic race. She is never heard bewailing the approaching demise of any member of the other races composing the population of Ireland.

Poems about the Irish and the Banshee.

By Mac and O
You'll always know
True Irishmen they say'.
But if they lack
The O and Mac,
No Irishmen are they'.

(^ How to spot an Irishman XD)

'How oft has the Banshee cried
How oft has death untied,
Bright links that glory move,
Sweet bonds entwined by love.'

(^ Lyrics form a song about Banshee's)

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Name: Liadan O'Connor
Gender: Female
Spirit: Banshee or Bean Sídhe
Skintone: Cream w/ Light Brown Freckles and light pink blushed cheeks.
Hair: Strawberry Blonde that floats about her head as if carried with an unnatural breeze.
Eyes: White (as in blind white, no pupils)
Distinguishing markings: From the tops of her eye up to her brow is colored red, it spreads out in a bar-like shape towards the side of her hair (picture will have a better view of what I mean). Her hands half way up to her lower-middle arm is also red.

Personality: Liadan's personality now is contrast to what it was before as she has "learned" from her previous "mistakes" in her past life.

Liadan is a quiet girl, not liking to attract too much attention to herself. You could say she is a wall flower as she tends to keep away from people as much as possible (this is her early years will be difficult as she is being led around by her care-taker). She is not known for taking risks, though she is a very curious girl and if she deems it safe enough she'll pry and look into something as much as humanly (haha) possible.

When it comes to relationships with friends (the very few she will have) she is your 'yes' girl, agreeing with mostly anything you say. She is also very supportive, being the one who you can cry on easily, or call on if you need help with something. Liadan feels more comfortable with her friends.

With lovers, however, she is most shy. She will rarely touch them, though she wishes she could. This is because she is afraid one day that her sorrowful song will be sung in their presence and she'll loose them forever. ((NOTE: By the time Liadan takes on a lover, I assume she'll have already foretold someone's death))

You'll never hear Liadan actually sing, but when alone she hums sweet songs softly, hoping no one will hear.

Abilities: Liadan is able to see the future, but only the grim parts of it. Her song (and oh she will sing on occasion) is a haunting, sorrowful melody that makes the pit of one's stomach knott and feel as if they ate rocks. And when Liadan is startled her scream pierces the ears, like nails on a chalk-board.

(Not So)Fun Facts: Liadan's white eyes really mean she is blind. As a Banshee she gave up her natural sight, for her "Unnatural Sight". As a result, Liadan will never truly see what her friends, family, and lovers look like. Liadan will never awaken before dark. The reason as to why Liadan hates bodies of water (whether it be baths, showers, washing her hands, etc) is because when her hands get wet the blood starts dripping off them, it never goes away, but it contiuously drips. So everything she owns eventually become blood stained.

Likes: The night time, soft breezes, honey smeared toast, warm milk, soft fabrics and the violin.
Dislikes: Spicy food, the daylight, overbearing people, stuffy and must smelling rooms, bodies of water.

History: Liadan O'Connor was a decendant of one of the five great Gaelic Families; the O'Gradys, the O'Neills, the O'Briens, the Kavanaghs, and the O'Connors. Unlike the majority of her family, Liadan did not wed within the Gaelic race, and instead took an Englishman as her husband. In return for him taking her last name, her father promised to double the dowery.

Her mother was not happy with this union and cursed her daughter, proclaiming that her death would come from the result of her and her husband's union (AKA baby). Ten months after her wedding, Liadan was told that she was five months with child. Liadan, remembering her mothers words, panicked and in a desperate act of trying to preserve her own life, carved the unborn child out of her stomach killing herself and the baby instantly.

It is said that when they preped her body for burning, the blood refused to wash off her hands.

(( The above was totally made up XD))

I like her history and the fact that she's sad. Though I do have a tendency to enjoy sadness much more than I should.
[sorry for late comment, I was called to dinner right after I said I would comment, hahaha]

Sounds like fanart is in order~

XD S'ok. I love her history too v_v <3. Normally I don't do something seriously grisly, just tragic or saddening. So this was a real turn for em as I had to come up with the best sounding death possible without goin' Saw III on it's a** 83...

^^ Thank you. I'm glad you liked it. I tried to keep to the fact most people believed Banshees were ghosts of women who were murdered or died during childbirth 8D. Granted she didn't die during child birth, but she died havign something to do with the baby XD
