Commissions - Art and Etiquette

Updated 01/31/2013

Got a question concerning art commissions? Read below if you want to know without going to PMs. If you do want to PM, don't worry about bugging me, things have been quiet lately, and I will not mind. This is here only for convenience, not because I am a meanie.

If you have further questions that aren't answered in the General Questions, or in the sections below, or you just want to chat however, please feel free to give me a PM! ^^

Gaia Commissions and Other FAQ

Q Will you do Gaia commissions?
Fundraising for OOC3, only if its for a pretty good item that I can use to get my contest going.

Q How can I get your art?
Currently the only way to get art from me is through OOC3 fundraising. Probably only in contests, and my auctions.

Q Wonder where my contest thread went, or what happened to the art for it?
Going to be posting an update soon, but here is the thread:
    Contest Thread

Q Can commissioners really use the art for anything on Gaia?
*ANYTHING* Breedables, Roleplay, Advertising, Profiles, More. As long as you are not claiming the art as your own and you bought it in a Gaia commission from me.

Q I see someone using your art and it doesn't belong to them! What should I do?
Nothing. Its fine. I don't appreciate it off of Gaia, but I do not want to chase after kids using my art for non profit. If it is art that someone commissioned from me, I leave that to the commissioner to do the chasing if they so desire. You may let whoever that person is know. smile

Q How about an art trade?
I sort of prefer to know the artist a bit before doing an art trade, but I am a bit more open to the trading for less detailed work... There are tons of artists I would love to have art from though, but I would prefer to pay the commission price or win one of your auctions if the trade is going to be a very detailed/involved one. Please don't be sad if I say no, its not because I don't like your art, but probably because I do not have time.

Q I am running an art contest, will you do art for it?
I need to raise funds for my OOC contests, so yes, I may enter. However, I am pretty selective due to time constraints. I cannot promise to enter into a contest upon invite, however, I will be happy to come take a look at the contest thread, comment on your characters, or just be friendly in general.

Q Can I pm you to talk? Even though I don't know you?
Yes. I love to get PMs and make new friends, it doesn't have to be about my art. I do not bite, I will not think you are lame because you want to meet a stranger, I will not be upset about my inbox getting an extra pm in there, and I will actually be pleased to meet you.

note: I tend to zone out on conversations regarding requests for items or help obtaining them.

Q I kinda know you now that we have talked for a bit, can I ask you to do some art for me or enter my contest?
I hate disappointing my friends or new acquaintances. I wish I could do art for everyone more than you probably realize. Nothing is more fun for me than pleasing a friend with a piece of artwork. But please realize when I do have friends ask me and I say someday I will try to get a character done for you, that is not the first person I have made that promise to, and the list is long for someone who doesn't do art a whole lot. Ok? I am not trying to be mean, but just imagine that I have a whole list of friends already who I should/would/have promised to do art for and it would be kind of rude to them to pass them up and do art for a newer friend or stranger.

Q Can I add you to my friends list?
Yes, you may. I do not decline friends requests. If you are nothing more than a friendly stranger, though, I will probably not add you to my friends list in return. This is because I use the "my gaia" friends list to see who is online and go find them to chat. Its hard to do that with a lot of people on the list who I don't know. Please send me a PM first telling me who you are if you want to remain on my list for any reason or to give me a heads-up that I know you, just in case you get lost in the auto add and deletions (hey, I get confused sometimes!)

Q Can I send you the mass friends PMs?
No, please don't. I do not really like PMs that are not personal and meant for chat. Unless it is an advertisement for an art contest or some other type of PM which makes sense to mass friend mail it (like you are going to be taking a break from gaia and want all your friends to know) I am not really interested in it.

.

Ok, thats it for now.

Commissions Process

My commissions process is outlined below, its a lot of reading, sorry. You do not have to read this, but if we are in a commissions arrangement, it will be the guideline. Thanks!

Quote:

Gaia Commissions Process Overview

The best place for answers about what to expect if you commission me and so the commissions process can go as smoothly as possible.

Artwork

Medium - Digital, graphite, maybe color pencil.

Resolution - Ranges from 2kx2k - 6kx8k depending on how large the final piece is. The artwork is meant to look good from 500x500 to 640x800 and printed on 8.5x11 for full images. You will be given the high resolution image and the psd for tubing, if you like.

Acceptable Subjects: - comic, fanart, fantasy, anime, anthro - your own original character. Fantasy animals are fine as well: unicorns, dragons, evil eyes, anything really. Male and female.

Art style - Artwork is completed in the style in my samples according to the auction/commission. Please note I vary things from time to time depending upon character inspiration and references (a cuter type character may have larger eyes and be more stylized in general, for example). If you have specific tastes or preferences, please make these aware to me, otherwise I will allow the muse to direct.
For more art, please visit my main DA gallery.

Communication:
By PM, primarily. There won't be lots of communication from my side except at the beginning, but please feel free to PM me for an update anytime.

For most auction types or gaia commissions I do not provide WIP of the basic sketch to work together on the artwork's direction. I am expecting your references and material to be a good enough starting point. And a starting point is all I really want to make the art. If I do not have enough information regarding your commission, expect discrepancies. Major revisions are available upon renegotiating the price.

For my high quality refined work, wips and more communication will occur from start to finish. These pieces take a lot longer than the loosely painted ones. At a minimum I will PM you the piece in later stages before finalizing it and/or ask questions regarding the references. You may ask to see the art at any time.

References:
Although I will decide on many of the details about the piece, I keep in mind all of the reference you submit and do my best to make sure the finished work will best reflect the character. It is really important to submit all necessary information or I will fill it in artistically, i.e., If your character always looks sad, I may need to know that, do they have unusually messy hair?, yea tell me please.

Reference Material
I love consistency. For original characters anything from your own writing, other artists versions of your character, cosplay reference - visuals with descriptions are preferred references, but simple descriptions will be ok if that's what works best for you. If I have questions concerning your reference material I will always contact you before proceeding.

Customization

Props and Details
Be as detailed as you like with your references, and what you imagine your piece to be. I love to design and detail clothing and welcome all types of these specifics - please keep in mind a highly detailed specification or additional props (weaponry, pets, etc) can change your commission price or that I may remove/limit the detail to keep it in line with the proposed commission type. We can discuss that before your commission begins.

Leave it to me?
Any artists favorite type of commission... leave any of the details up to me. I don’t mind... I will even create a character from the ground up for you, if that’s your wish. Any details you want me to decide upon creatively, either let me know or just leave it out of your reference material.

Backgrounds
A simple textured color background is included for digital commissions. Detailed backgrounds are subject to varying price ranges depending on complexity. If you are interested in a detailed background or decorative background please email me to discuss that before ordering.

At any time please feel free to ask me how things are going and that you would like an update on the image. It’s your money, I want to make sure you feel it was well spent. Please keep in mind I may not begin your commission exactly the moment I receive payment and reference, and that I will probably be working on other commissions at the same time, but that it will be completed by the end date barring unforeseen circumstances. I will communicate to you any problems with your piece or its completion date as soon as I know of them.

Copyright
I retain all copyrights to the finished artwork which may or may not include your original character. Please go here for questions regarding copyright. How does this affect your purchased piece? I may display the finished work in my gallery, use it or some part of it for advertising, publish it either offline or online, sale prints of the artwork etc. If you are interested in purchasing the copyright privileges/ownership of the finished artwork (to sell or reproduce the art for sale) - please visit my artwork policies sheet and contact me before bidding. For more details on copyright and my other artwork use policies, please visit my Art Policies FAQ. Thanks!

Gaia Commissions

Some exceptions to my commissions where gaia is concerned. Here is a brief on that:

1. I may decide to cancel a Gaia commission for any reason, and refund payment. I can do this at any time in the commissions process. I really try to avoid this, however even in the best of circumstances, stuff can happen, and so I must make an allowance for that instance.

2. Turnaround time, art type offered, and any other details are outlined in your commissions email/pm or auction info.

3. You may edit the actual art to your heart's content... Did your character acquire a tattoo or a new scar, special jewelry, or whatever? You decide she needs her eyes to be a bit bigger? Sure go ahead, I don't really mind. I won't get offended if you spend a moment making a characters mouth more close to the shape it really is, or the hair less shiny or the eyes a deeper green, etc, the mood less happy and more sad. For large edits all I ask is you remove my name from the art.

4. You may use the art for 'anything' on Gaia as within the Gaia TOS.

5. You may remove my signature or any notes I left for you on the image.

And that's it for now. I may add to this later.

Freebies

I usually offer freebies in my art threads. I enjoy doing spur of the moment art for people and also it is good for advertising and generating excitement about an auction, shop or contest. Because freebies are "free" generally, or a reward for a very simple contest (like dice games) I enjoy a certain amount of freedom regarding the freebie. Most of the time this has not been a problem, however because there is sometimes confusion regarding freebies, here is an outline of what to expect if you have won a freebie from me.

- Artwork -
They are meant to be sketchy, not as polished, smaller and less detailed because they are fast and quick artwork. They are free of charge and a gift to the winner of whatever contest the person won the freebie for.

I try to complete artwork as the freebie offered. However, because this is a freebie I expect to be able to change my mind due to inspiration and do something else. Please be assured your artwork will not be lesser than the artwork which was offered and in most cases will be above the level of quality which had been originally offered (probably because I liked your character).

- Time frame -
I do not have a set time frame for freebies. Usually they are completed during the auction or soon after within one or two weeks. However, your freebie will take as long as it takes. I have had freebies that were not completed for over a year due to inspiration, real life or a large art workload. Its a freebie, and it for the most part is meant as a gift, so please give me as long as I want to complete it. I haven't cancelled a freebie yet.

- Gold instead? -
You may request the amount of 100k gold for your freebie art instead of receiving the art at any time before I begin working on the freebie. I will not be offended, I will not mind. The last thing I want to do is art for someone who is not really into art or really needs the gold or who doesn't want to wait because I have been taking forever (sorry!). Its your choice. If you choose gold instead, that's totally alright. This unfortunately cannot apply to "act of god" style freebies since they are a surprise.

- Cancellation -
I reserve the right to cancel a freebie and grant 100k gaia gold to the freebie winner in the event that I am unable to do the freebie for any reason. I will try to avoid this circumstance as much as I can. I have not had to cancel a freebie yet, however I would like to allow for the chance it could happen.

- Special Allowances -

    Can I alter it?
    - All of my usual Gaia allowances apply to freebies. You may edit the freebie; You may remove my signature, any writing, notes, change the colors, add little details, fix anatomy problems, clean things up, etc. Not sure if its a good idea? PM me, I won't mind. Not all of my art is going to look good flipped... sorry, I get lazy too you know.

    Can I Color it?
    - You may color the freebie, you may find another artist to color the freebie.

However, please note: No other artist or person may apply their signature to my art, no matter what they did to it. Please make sure they understand this before asking/paying someone to color my art. If they insist, please have them PM me or direct them to this section. I do not want any confusion concerning who created the art, (that's just how I feel about it), unless it is a joint collab art where I chose the artist myself.

Etiquette

I have been doing art on gaia for a while now. In that time, for the most part it has been a lot of fun for me and has given me inspiration to grow as an artist and presented challenges for me which you can't really find on any other art site (in my opinion). Unfortunately, as with everything there is bad with the good and it hasn't all been perfect (what is?)... Well, no big, it happens, right? Right, but we can try to avoid it at least, or I can at least let you know which things I consider akin to allowing diplomacy to fall by the wayside.

Commissions

    - I like diplomacy when renegotiating a price on an commission if I decide it is going to be more complex than the original offering.

    - Please do not ask for huge changes at the end of a commission. I do my work off of your references. You will be getting my art based on them. By huge changes, I mean personality wrong in posturing, skin tone very different, not wearing preferred outfit, curly vs straight hair. I am ok with small alterations.

    - Did something go wrong with your commission? Do you have a complaint? Please talk to me so we can work out whatever is wrong or I can clear up any confusion there might be regarding the commission guidelines and expectations.

Freebies

    - Did I forget your freebie? PM me! I *try* to remember all the freebies I owe, but sometimes I promise something and don't write it down somewhere and then I forget. Happens.

    - It makes me sad when people do not like their freebie, but I am well aware that you can't please everyone! Please be diplomatic when accepting your free art?
