I decided to make this topic just because I thought there had to be one.

So....Green Day, probably the best band in the world as we speak, great music, great lyrics, great everything. One of my favourite bands, second only to Queen.

Post what you love and hate about the legend that is Green Day.

I disagree highly. Green Day was never good; old Green Day could have been great, but they are just posers, that's why they went emo. They try so hard to be emo, when they can just stop singing songs that make people cry and start singing how they used to be. It couldn't hurt to stop posing for a scene.

I consider this you oppinion, and I won't try to change your mind.
But I do dissagree. Green Day is not emo, their last album is more along the lines of rock opera, combined with their original sound. I've studied American Idiot, I've compared it with Meat Loaf's Bat Outta Hell and Queen's A Night at the Opera. But they never abandoned their punk-rock roots, as you can observe in songs like St Jimmy, American Idiot, Holiday.

Every band has to evolve, especially a band like Green Day who have been around for almost 2 decades. People just got bored with their old sound, and that can be proven by the fact that their later albums, pre-American Idiot, were doing poorly in the tops. I think the change in sound did nothing but good. We finally get to hear Billie-Joe's powerful voice, which in their older songs was never possible, and we see Mike and Tre at their best.

And on the part about songs that make people cry: take Wake me up when September ends. To me that song means a great deal, it came out just weeks before my father died, and hearing that song, and how Billie talks about his own father's passing really helped me. So, you see, songs that are somewhat more emotional than others are not a bad thing.

Don't get me wrong, I love their old stuff to death, but I also admire the new Green Day. It shows the great talent of those 3 guys, a talent we could have not noticed had they continued to produce the same type of songs over and over.

While that may be my opinion, if you asked any real punk rocker they will answer with a question; "Why would Green Day conform to the emo scene?"

While they might not sing emo, they've certainly tapped into that. I mean listen to the old sound and compare with St Jimmy. That song was a shot at the emo rock scene, and in my opinion, they have certainly succeeded in throwing the whole thing out the window.

The first rule of punk rock music is; Never abandon your own sound and conform to what the audience wants. When they get bored of you, your career is up. Never conform to what they want. But Billy Joe Armstrong didn't want that, and wants to be famous throughout his life. He is also running out of good songs. American Idiot was a disgusting CD.

I'll repeat what I said, I find nothing emo about Green Day.

On the "abandoning" of their original sound, I think they've done that a long time ago, on Nimrod. If you listen to songs like Hitchin' a Ride, Redundant you can observe a very different style, especially in Hitchin' a Ride.

I think they weren't very punk-rock to begin with, they always tried to change, to make something different, to make what they thought was better music, and personally I think they did an excellent job.

And on the part about if tey get bored of you, you throw in the towl, I don't believe that any real musician who enjoys playing his music would do that.
And I doubt many punk-rockers would keep doing that once they find success. They would try to stay mainstream and make as much money as possible.

I'll even give you an example: Johnny Rotten. In the '70s, he was the definition of punk, but after the Pistols broke up, he formed Public Image Limited, which was post-punk, then his solo album which I must admit I thought was a horrible album, then he started acting, and now I hear he's working on an album with Raggae influences.

So, no one would give up being famous so easily. And personally, I'm glad Green Day didn't.

I love Green Day. They're always one of my favorite bands, even if I'm not the biggest fan of American Idiot.

I personally am not a big fan of Greenday but I do get tired of people bashing them and saying they're sellouts and whatnot. They were always pop punk. That was the sound that was popular at the time. Over time it morphed into what it is today. All artists change their style over time as they grow as musicians and as people and I don't think they should be condemed for that. Besides, they are far from the least talented or original band out there...

Greenday are certainly one of my favorite bands of all time!! 3nodding
