So, I was looking in my new Guitar Player magazine and was excited about the top guitar albums of 1967 being in there. The cover shows The Who Sell Out, and The Who are my other favourite band beside VU...so yeah I really wanted to have a look see at these albums. I opened to the page that the albums are on, and there's VU & Nico!

Instead of spending the mid '60's penning odes to incense and pepppermints, the Velvet Underground -- featuring lead guitarist/songwriter Lou Reed and rhythm guitarist Sterling Morrison -- was busy documenting New York's East Village scene, crafting songs about such too-radical-for-radio themes as sadomasochism, hard drug use, and overall excess. These were all kryptonite issues for record companies at the time, but thanks in large part to the moral, financial, and artistic support of Andy Warhol and his Exploding Plastic Inevitable, The Velvet Underground and Nico actually made its way to vinyl. Sociological significance aside, the record's lasting musical weight lies in the fact that Reed and company were also pushing sonic boundaries, melding a garage-rock simplicity with a mastery of dynamics, and fearlessly experimenting with dissonant tones, off-center rhythms, and unusual tunings (check out the all-D "Ostrich Guitar" tuning in "All Tomorrow's Parties"). Songs range from the dreamily melodic "Sunday Morning" and "I'll Be Your Mirror" to the frenetic, sometimes brutal guitar-led aural assaults of "Heroin" and "European Son." Morrison alternated between an early '60's Gibson SG and Gretsch Tennessean for the majority of the 11 tracts, but switched to a Vox Phantom VI for "Femme Fatale" and "Run Run Run." Reed did his dirty work with a Gretsch Country Gentleman with built-in preamp, delay, and tremolo effects. Both used Vox Super B eatle amps. Try to name one indie/art-rock/punk/postpunk/glam/noice/you-name-it band that wasn't influenced by this record.

yay, I love that article!

I must say, it does pretty much sum them up, in ways I tried to sum up Run Run Run in my post (how fun!), except more magazine style rather than talking to who ever will listen style, though its much the same... but still..


anyways, thats so great to hear about the Velvet Underground places.
I always feel so happy when I see something about them, but then again I only know one person who likes them besides me (not counting my sister)

Yeah, I like them getting credit, too. Too bad they didn't get it back in the '60's sad

but in the 60s, the radiowaves were too conservative for sadomachoismnistness (whatever the crap it is, S&M), and now they're just kinda like... extict.
they got underground credit, but chyeah, it is too bad.
they'd have been huuuge.

go be a radio DJ, and play good music!!

but yeah, I can't listen to the radio sometimes cuz they'll put on like, Genesis and then I'm gone in a second haha.
And the ONE good radiostation became a talk station. TALK STATION ON FM!??
and it makes no sense, everyone loved that station, haha people'd call in at like 2 in the morning drunk off their a** asking for the best music... <33

Ya, our best station started playing 80's and 90's music :/ which isn't all bad but every other station does that too so there's no variety.

WHY DO GOOD STATIONS ALWAYS CHANGE??! crying crying

like the station I'm talking about, they played like, only good s**t.
great 90s classics, like maybe nirvana or rage or audioslave or any punk-esque, rock, grunge, not poppy music of that era.
then cool 80s, maybe talking heads or some random new wave band or random cool s**t.
and then of course the classic rock, Zeppelin, Sabbath, or other bands like that.
and then good music from now!

and now.. ugh.
sometimes they play music on weekends, they keep changing their minds though.

Hmm, maybe it was from before I was much of a fan...but I've kept all my Rolling Stones so I'll have to look into it.
