In the book I am writing and its preceding books, I have created or in a way manipulated four different races.
I began with your basic man and elves and decided to change things around. And yes I know these two are very cliche when it comes to fantasy.
The basic premise of the world is that there is a unified existing field of energy or in a way fountain of energy around and inside the planet of The Skare. Animals evolved naturally on the Skare and populated the world and over time of course they died.
Out of all the racial stories for Fantasy this does not have gods, goddess or deities in any form. What happens when a creature dies is that its soul or the bit of energy required to power the body seeps slowly back into the overall field of the world. In a way when something is born, it snatches up a bit of this energy to empower life.
As things die they leave in certain areas, or focuses, an imprint of their minds and lives. These imprints over time began to coalesce into one area. Time and time again the collective imprints compouded and actually created a concious mind. This mind then over time began to move the energy and learned. It learned that there were others like it and thus it explored.
However, energy cannot really interact with matter in which the mentality wished for. So as it watched animals being born it began to learn how to direct matter and molecules to form. And over time these mentalities construct for themselves bodies if you will. Like a person sliding into a suit of flesh these creatures born from the world itself in a way named themselves Fae, or simply Child or Children.
The Fae as a people in later times are usually called Elementals, not really beceause they were born of Fire or Water, but because they were in tune with the natural harmony of the world. They had been created over time from it and a part of themselves always was connected.
Over time of course the Fae created societies and cultures and learned to procreate. They made themselves more flesh and became less energy. They learned that however by cementing themselves wholly into the flesh and matter that they could no longer innately direct the energ of the world.
So they went on, and over time they noticed something. Everywhere they looked, there were naturally occuring symbols. Spirals, scratches and patterns. They ignored it and advanced society onwards towards logic and thought. And yet one day, one of them applied mathmatical reasoning and found out something. Each symbol shared a common measurement with the others. So they went about recording and writing them down.
And what did they find? Well, it was an accident to begin with. The Fae desired a way to record their histories, they had oral and mental and were a long lived people. But, because of their long lives, they only really focused upon the asthetic and never really taking down notes. Surelly, they did not need anything beyond what they had. And yet, an adventerous group of youngsters began to apply the found symbols to their language. However, they found out something that was not really desirable.
These marks, or Runes if you will should never have been applied to written language. Because they and the Fae were a naturally occuring phenomenon in many ways they reacted. The words of the Fae became literaly, when someone wrote Fire it a lith in flame. When someone wrote life it gained a soul and a mind.
What they discovered was simple, and they had ignored one fact. All the Runes had been discovered near focuses. The areas where energy collected and warped the natural laws of reality. IN a way each time one of these marks was combined into different sentences and or words it directed an effect from the field of energy of the world.
