The afternoon was early and the sun was not far past the center of the sky as Halloween walked with her head down. As of late Halloween had been extremely down in the dumps, this day was no different, and her tunny was getting round. The rounder her belly got the sadder she got. She was getting fat and even when she didn't feel hungry she still ate. She'd even had strong urges to just eat grass. Something didn't seem right to her at all and this day she was heading back to her herd to speak with the lead mare and see if she perhaps could give some advice on how to stop the growing fatness and saddness.

Princess shifted as she lay, curled up next to her baskets. Helaku had often been a good sport about basket-sitting, but now he was an expecting father himself. And with the heartbreaks of his past, he deserved to have time to dote over his mate and impending foals.
Spying a familar calico mare coming her way, she nickered a greeting.

Halloween returned Princess's nicker greeting as she got closer. As she expected Princess to be she was watching over the baskets that held her foals within. When she finally got just a few feet from Princess and the baskets she turned her body to the side allowing her rounding belly to be seen as she laid down with a huff. "I've never felt so worn out."

"Worn out?" The bay mare's eyebrows rose as she caught sight of Halloween's rounded stomach, high enough that for a moment that it seemed they'd fall off. "Yes, I was often weary as well carrying my own. They're heavy." She snorted softly, eyeing the calico mare. "Lightning isn't the father, is he?"

Halloween looked over at Princess curiously. "Father of what? What are you talking about?" Halloween asked just staring at Princess. What was she talking about? Father? She was just depressed and eating more because she was depressed...

Princess simply stared for a long moment. The silence stretched between them, until it felt taut enough to snap. Finally, Princess spoke. "Halloween...considering this is your first pregnancy, I should have realized you wouldn't think that anything was out of the ordinary. But if I were you, I'd try to remember which stallions I'd dallied with recently, to figure out who the father is likely to be."

Halloween sighed. Princess seemed extremely confident that she was pregnant and she was really starting to believe it. The only two stallions she'd really fooled with lately were Guillian and Gingey and both of those had been from lonliness but anything was possible. She hadn't fooled with Guillian in a month or so and that just left Gingey during that one lust filled night. "What do I do? I've only been with one stallion lately and that was... I barely know him! How can I care for these foals?!" Halloween stammered and began to cry. Now she was going to have to care for foals while dealing with herself. This couldn't be happening. She was just getting fat! Just fat there couldn't be anything else in her belly. There couldn't!

Princess' face twisted in sadness and anger, ears flattening. Sadness for Halloween, anger for the stallion who had done this to her. At least it wasn't Lightning, the calico mare wouldn't say that she barely knew the father if that were so. She nudged Halloween's shoulder to get her attention, if a touch roughly. "You'll manage it, girl. You're not the first mare to have to raise foals alone."

Halloween turned her gaze to Princess, her worry was plastered to her face. She wasn't ready to be a mother, she'd at least hoped to find a stallion who would willingly stay with her and not run off or become evil. "What if I can't? What if something goes wrong? What if I end up getting the little lives killed?" Halloween said. Her worry was up and beyond it's normal limits. Must be hormones.

"You won't." Princess' voice was firm. "You can and will raise those foals, you will do well, and you won't let the stallion try to make you his mate out of pity." She rose to her feet, muscles twinging slightly still after the labor. The bay mare was almost recovered, though. "If a Kalona can raise foals, so can you."

Halloween glanced away. Oh she wasn't ready for this but there was no way back now. "Well I guess if we got tired we could just herd all the foals together and work as a team to watch them all." Halloween replied in an attempt for dry humor. The herd was growing slowly now. With Princess's foals, her coming foals and Helaku's coming foals the herd was gaining closer to seven or eight members.

Princess' mouth quirked in a smile. Halloween might be joking, but the alpha mare found the idea interesting. "That could actually be a good idea. But speaking of herds, their choice to enter or not will wait until they are adults." She shook her head. "I would rather not they leave because they felt they were 'forced' to be in. Some may prefer to stay with their fathers or their mothers."

Halloween tilted her head to the side at Princess's thoughts of her attempt at humor but sighed at her words about the foals. "Well it is better for them to be able to choose but I couldn't imagine now letting go of a foal."

"Some make their own choices for themselves, even when young." Princess tossed her head, moving a bit of curly mane out of her face. "And it can be difficult, keeping track of two or three strong-willed, energetic foals. If the sire is willing and worthy of watching one, then sometimes it can be a bit of a lightened burden." The bay mare laughed slightly. "Of course, I don't have much room to speak...Waya is also of the herd, but I have seen a little of how they do things here."

Halloween thought of Gingey, the only possible stallion that could be the father. She knew little of him or if she would be able to trust him to care for one of the foals. Princess's comment on Waya caught her attention and she asked curiously. "How things are done?"
