If anyone's heard of Kneebody, they're a good (mostly jazz) band. They've got one CD out.

This is for bands that wouldn't count in the category of jazz, classical, or blues. xp Feel free to make your own topic about them.

I was once convinced that I was the biggest Opeth fan in Melbourne.

I like a lot of music like that, though I don't enjoy listening to it live. I fear a lot of the association I have when I get into that sort of crowd- there are those that really are into music and music alone. Where I am from, almost everyone who can really be called a musician has some connection to metal, but at the same time, there are some really lame people I have met that liked the music that I liked too.

For that reason I never actually tell people publicly that I like that music, until they get to know me. But, I do empathise with your love of those groups.

Not a big Opeth fan, used to be though, but ehh...my music tastes matured since then. The metal stuff I mentioned is much better. xp As for fear of association...meh it's no big deal, as you won't see most of the people again after the concert's over.

Which music is "that music", anyway? The bands I listed there were from different genres.

They're not really jazz, though. They don't fit into any category, really, it's just that they use jazz instruments (trumpet, alto sax, drums, keyboard, and then an electric bass) and are more like jazz than blues or classical.

ah, okay, sounds interesting. Which reminds me of a band I need to add to the list...

I only recognised a few names.

Lately I have been listening to a lot of lamb. They are an antidote to some of the more melody-oriented composers I listen to. Theirs is likely the only music written after 1960 that I have willingly heard in the last year.

I really should add a quick description between each band with some album reccomendations. Could you describe Lamb for me?

If I was to put them into a genre, I would call it 'electronica', in the same way that Bjork is. Lamb have a very beautiful, warm feel about them, which is why I suppose so many artists I know like them.

Ah, okay. I'm not into electronica, myself. I need to hear real instruments playing...or at least synthesized versions of real instruments. sweatdrop

Oh, they are real instruments, pianos, bongos, guitars, basses, strings etc. I just has that elecronica air about it. Like I said, in a Bjork vain.

Lately I've been going through a phase with a band called Nightwish. It's metal, I suppose, but it has a very musical quality to it, and not nearly as much screaming as I would normally expect of a metal band. I'd recommend "Over The Hills and Far Away" as a first song to listen to, though it doesn't expose the group's lyrical qualities as well as some of their other songs.
