In honor of International Womens Day, Who is your favorite female author, and why?
PostPosted: Tue Mar 06, 2007 12:45 am

Caroline B. Cooney

She's my fav author, she wrote over 100 books. My favorites are The Face on the Milk Carton series, and the Time Travelers Quartet.

The Face on the Milk Carton series is about a girl that was kidnapped as a girl, but never knew it, but she always wondered why she looked and acted nothing like her parents, then sees her picture as a child on a milk carton and she goes through this growing up stage while trying to find her real parents, and figure out who her parents she's with now are.

Time Travelers Quartet is a romance series, this girl can't find love in her time, and one day she was at this old historical mansion she loved, but it was going to be torn down and she somehow slips a centery back and falls in love with a guy there, then has to decide if she should stay because the man she loves is supposed to marry another girl that he doesn't love and the parents decided on it for money purposes.

There's another book, Burning Up, it's not part of a series, but it's about a town that likes to pretend there's nothing wrong, but when a colored friend is murdered the main char goes on a search through the history of racism in her town. It's a good read as well ^^

That's my rambling xd

I'd have to say my favourite female authors are mostly manga-kas such as Ai Yazawa and Fujii Mihona because they wrote some of my favourite manga and they have pretty strong female characters.

Another is Kristyn Dunnion(Mosh Pit) and S.E. Hinton(Outsiders) because Mosh Pit is my favourite book and The Outsiders was an awesome one as well.

but there are sooo many to choose from whee

I can't believe I heard someone say "Face on the Milk Carton" it's been so long since I've read that. That was a terrific book (movie = horrendous) but the book was extremely interesting.

I'd have to say Tamora Pierce for the popular novelists because all her protagonists represent strong females facing extraordinary circumstances and although they are put down quite frequently and yet still manage to keep their heads held high.

Jean Auel is actually fairly good at capturing all aspects of women especially with Ayla. She is strong but can be vulnerable, she has faced extrenuating circumstances and still remains to be herself and continue on.

(there should be a music subforum XD For some reason all I can think about are female singers lol)

edit: I'll post some more later

I can't believe anyone mentioned Jean Auel. She's a great writer, but not many people know her. I have to say that other than my mother, you're the only one who has ever mentioned her. Clan of the Cave Bear was such a good book, it had its difficult pages to read though. Over all it was great though.

It was really interesting reading it especially since it was the end of seventh grade when I read it and it contained *ahem* mature content. *laugh* The I read Diana Gabaldon's series. I re-read Jean Auel's books so much it's not even funny. I can't wait for the next one but it'll probably take several years just like her previous ones. urgh. Oh well.

My mom got me to read her as well. It's really interesting I mean it has a lot of drama but not over-excessive, it's comedic in a more subtle sense most of the time. It's romantic and yet there's something else there that I can't pin point. I'll get it eventually.

Jane Austen and Mary Shelley are my top favorites.

I haven't read all of Austen's novels, but they mostly have the same theme: the normal, mundane actions ultimately being heroic-like in their own sense. I definitely recommend Pride and Prejudice. Also, if you've read some Gothic fiction, you should also read Northanger Abbey. If you haven't read Gothic fiction, then try The Castle of Otranto by Horace Walpole. It's pretty short, around 80-100 pages or so and it portrays the ideas that Austen satirizes in Northanger Abbey.

Of course, Frankenstein by Mary Shelley should be read. Not much more I can say about that except that it is awesome. Heh.

However, I absolutely adore the amatory fiction by Eliza Haywood. Her writing is so over the top: exactly what amatory fiction should be (i.e. the persecuted maiden trying to balance her desire for her man and what society expects of her, focusing mainly on the nobility). If you guys want a good soap opera novel, then amatory fiction is the way to go. I will admit, I am not a fan of soap operas, but amatory fiction is somewhat like it, only way cooler.

Some stuff by Haywood includes the short stories of "Fantomina" and "The Masqueraders." One of her novels is, Love in Excess; or the Fatal Inquiry. I recommend "Fantomina" first, just to get a sense of what amatory fiction is. If you love it, keep reading more of her stuff. If not, then don't.

Ultimately, this is good stuff, good stuff.

Anne McCaffrey, becuase I'm big on sci-fi, I'm not too found of her fantasy books though.
And I love Caroline B. Cooney (I don't have a reason for this, I just really like her books... most of them anyway).

I think mine would be Anne Rice. She is a very accomplihed female author, and a lot of her main characters are males! I think it is so cool how she can do that!

I also really enjoy her books because they aren't just gorey vampire books, or romance vampire books, they go a lot deeper. It's all about internal struggle and such. They really are amazing!

My favorite female author is Mercedes Lackey hands down. Right after her, though, is Tamora Pierce. They all have strong female protagonists, but they keep them human, too.

For manga, my favorite female authors would have to be Yuu Watase and Natsuki Takaya.

I think that one of my favorite authors is V.C. Andrews, although most of her work was written by a male. She died before she finished her second series. I have read everything except for her newest book. I own almost all of her books. My mom read her work as a kid, and really enjoyed it. One day I asked her what I should read next and she told me "Flowers In The Attic". Its got to be one of the best books I've ever read. I've read it at leat five times, and will probably read it more than that.

I really enjoy JK Rowling. I'm a HP freak. I would really like to know if she can write other things though. Some authors only write one thing. I'm not sure she'll ever write anything else though. She seemed kind or happy to be done with HP. It seemed like kind of a hassle to her towards the end. Oh well, I guess we'll see if she keeps writing.
