Gaea/Gaia = World or Earth in Latin(I think it's Latin sweatdrop ). Dis is a prefix for not, anti, etc.
The "Hour of Darkness" subtitle I'm still unsure of. I think it meant to referr to the fact that the Netherworld had no actual ruler and there was fight over it, therefore it was sorta like a "Dark Age"

On a side note, "Dis" is also the city on the fifth layer of Hell in Dante's Inferno.

"Gaea" can also mean paradise, which is what Hell (the Netherworld) isn't. 3nodding

Was looking around and came upon this:Quote: Dis- The second layer of the Nine Hells is a burning city of iron. The red glow of infernal heat burns within the scorched iron walls, and a pall of smoke rises up to form a general dark haze over the entire layer. Some claim that Dis is concealed within a great ring of mountains, for the layer is the city, and the city is the layer. And "Gaea" is the Goddess of the Earth...
So I guess "Disgaea" could mean two things really, since there's the Earth and Hell in the game and the title personifies that with these two affixes.

Rei_Kusanagi Well there's also an heaven.... I think it's to the fact the whole game is very unheard of (playing the next overlord.....wtih exploding penquins, flash gordon rip offs, and even an angel) dont forgett more realistic power rangers and stuff. hhmm... maybe the main evils are focused on coming from teh netherworld(Hell) and the human world(earth)

Personally, I think a name isn't that big a deal. It's the game play and story that's the REAL catcher for ya.

The Japanese title is Makai Senki: Disgaea.
From what little Japanese that I know Makai means Netherworld...what does Senki mean?
