Creatures

Air Screamer/Night Flutter - Pterodactyl-like demons that appear to be either skinless or burned. A source claims "the pterosaur-type monsters found throughout town were brought forth from an illustration in one of Alessa's favorite books, The Lost World."

Larval Stalker - Partially visible, harmless ghost-like entities. They cause the radio to emit white noise and make squeaking noises before disappearing. They cannot be killed, although they will stumble and disappear when the flashlight beam is directed at them.

Bloodsucker - Large, parasitic worms that have an obsession with drinking blood. Although they are not really an enemy that is faced, they can kill with one attack, so it would be best to find other methods to deal with them.

Mumbler - Humanoid creatures that look somewhat like a teddy bear with giant claws. They are only present in the last part of the sewers in the US version and replace the grey children in the PAL version.

Grey Child - Knife-wielding demon children. They look as though they have a gaping hole where their face should be. These were censored in the PAL version of the game (although they can still be found in the PAL version of the demo), and were replaced by Mumblers. The groans they make as they attack Harry are actually the sound of a child's laughter electronically slowed down. The monsters may be a reference to the children that tormented Alessa as a child. Near the end of the game, the Grey Children become invisible.

Puppet Doctor (Parasitized Doctor) - Monstrous doctors possessed by a parasite. They attack with scalpels. They come from Alessa's fear of hospitals and doctors, and possibly to extract punishment on the medical staff that kept her in isolation.

Puppet Nurse - Monstrous nurses wearing old-fashioned uniforms. They attack with scalpels, and like the Doctors, they are controlled by a parasite, giving them a humpbacked appearance. Similarly, they seem to come from Alessa's loathing of hospitals and nurses.

Romper - Gorilla-like creatures that are fast, deadly and very difficult to kill. They represent the fear Alessa had for adults.
Groaner - Demonic dogs with decaying flesh. They are fast, nimble, and attack in packs. They represent Alessa's fear of large dogs. They appear outdoors and are easily dispatched.
Hanged Scratcher - Found in the sewers. They usually ambush in numbers and can be difficult to kill. They resemble an overgrown praying mantis.
Wormhead - Similar to the Groaners but are faster and stronger.

Creeper - Large insects that lurk in school and the sewers. They can easily be killed with melee weaponry. However, if they attack in a group of two or three, they can cause significant damage.

Abstract Daddy - The Abstract Daddy's appearance suggests rape. It looks like a walking bed, with a large humanoid figure and a smaller figure struggling under the covers. (Some fans have seen the creature as a walking door, dubbing it the Doorman.) It has four legs which are used to approach a victim. The creature lifts its body and reveals a "mouth" that is used to attack. Supposedly, Thomas Orosco, Angela's father, sexually assaulted Angela a great deal, resulting in this monster created out of her own guilt (her mother blamed her for the assaults). After the player fights Abstract Daddy, small versions are encountered which may represent the weaker James suffocating his wife. In some original production documents, the name given for these creatures was "Angela's Papa." They are strong enemies that inflict high levels of damage and usually attack in pairs. Interestingly enough, Angela seems to see Abstract Daddy as her actual father, rather than the monstrous form James sees them as.

Mandarin - Giant-armed monsters which hang from gratings. Similar to the Closers found in Silent Hill 3. They may represent James's anguish and for this reason are not allowed to stand above ground. (The game is full of hanging figures - convicts, monsters, the picture of Valtiel at the historical society, etc. - most abundantly in the prison section.) Usually they will be seen hanging under grating and bite James as he passes overhead.

Closer - Lumbering, giant-armed monster with great strength and reach. Its head is more or less a tube that leads to a mouth. The lower portion of the body looks more like a female with a mini skirt, with high heels for feet. If Heather gets too close, it defends itself by swinging it arms slowly, knocking her back. Large, bony spikes are hidden in their arms and cause a large amount of damage when used. The Closer monster is said by some to originate from the memories Alessa has of her abusive and manic mother, Dahlia Gillespie because of its looming female figure and powerful arms, which could signify an abused child's fear of their attackers' strikes.

Double Head - Dogs that have heads that split vertically in half. They will howl and quickly pursue Heather when they see her. They are also attracted to beef jerky, the random bloody carcasses found in some areas in the game, and loud noises. The Double Heads are bandaged and may be a reference to Alessa when she was burned and bandaged with her soul split in half. Quite often, they hunt in packs, and are capable of launching surprise attacks.

Insane Cancer - Enormous, obese humanoids with great strength. Its name may derive from the fact that its body resembles a grossly overgrown tumor. Although they usually move slowly, shifting their weight back and forth, they will sometimes run at Heather and knock her down. They are usually found sitting down or sleeping, and whilst doing this, they regenerate their health. They will "deflate" after dying.

Slurper - Crawling, anteater-like creatures with great speed. Their face is long and pointed, like that of a rat, and loud noises attract its attention. They often pretend to be dead in order to surprise Heather. They will try to pin Heather down and dart up her skirt, which represents Heather's fear of being raped, and also pertains to finding a taser in her room.

Ghosts (Victims) - Walter Sullivan's victims; they cannot be killed. There are 21 Victims in all, but only 16 are fought by Henry as ghosts (however, one of them is fought as a monster and represents 2 victims - see below). Victims attack in a similar fashion to how Walter killed them. They slowly float toward Henry, and when he is vulnerable, will pierce their hands into his chest and attack his heart. Victims are one of the most dangerous enemies in Silent Hill 4. Although they are almost invincible, they can be knocked out by a powerful blow or shot down with a rare silver bullet. All of the ghosts can also be weakened by holy candles and saint medallions (which can also stop Henry from getting headaches from the ghosts). The only weapons capable of permanently putting them down are the five Swords of Obedience. There are 'super' victims (see below) that are noticeably more powerful than other ghosts. These 'super' victims do not have to be pinned, with the exception of Victim 18. For further information on SH4's ghosts

Twin Victim ( Victim 07 + 08 ) - Walter Sullivan's seventh and eighth victims were twins Billy and Miriam Locane. They are the only two of Walter's victims that manifest themselves monsters instead of ghosts. This is partly due to Walter's guilt over killing innocent children, but by giving them the appearance of monsters, they seem dangerous and far from innocent. The twins' spirits have fused together, giving this monster its two heads. Because Billy and Miriam were the youngest of Walter's victims, the heads of the Twin Victim look disturbingly like calm infants' faces. While these monsters look grotesque and intimidating, they can easily be dealt with, as they have trouble turning around quickly, but they are at their most dangerous at medium range when they lunge at Henry.

Alessa had acquired psychic powers - powers that she had always possessed. If she had been living under normal circumstances, these powers would almost never manifest themselves. She naturally possessed some amounts of spiritual intuition and her "sixth sense" was powerful enough that she began to have premonitions..

At a certain point, Alessa's mother Dahlia came to the realization that a certain ritual, to birth the cult's god, would likely be a success using Alessa as the mother. The technique had been performed on other girls that the cult abducted and had failed.

Offering up her own daughter, Dahlia performed the technique to bring about the descent of the cult's god using Alessa in the cellar of her own house. The method Dahlia used to bring about the descent of the cult's god had nearly succeeded with Alessa as the mother, but Alessa quickly let part of her soul escape and the technique was not completely successful. In short, even with the embryonic malevolent god within her, the ritual was in a suspended state. Alessa had suffered burns covering her entire body that were far beyond a fatal level, but she continued to live - that is, she was kept alive - because of the demonic deity protecting its mother's body. Additionally, Dahlia intentionally kept Alessa in that excruciating state for years because of an incantation she had performed that counted on Alessa to be in constant pain, therby compelling the missing part of her soul to respond to her.

That part of her soul was reborn as Cheryl. The little girl Harry found on the side of the road, and raised afterwards, for 7 years. If the soul could be unified, the ritual would be complete and the God would awaken, so Dahlia caused Alessa to suffer, which would nuture the demon within her, and compell her to call out to ther "other half".

Although Cheryl was Alessa's "other self," she was not conscious of it. When she told Harry she wanted to go to Silent Hill, it was because the sensation of Alessa's suffering - "Someone help me" - had reached her. For seven years, Alessa endured her suffering because she had not wanted to destroy whatever small happiness her other self was able to enjoy, but little by little, Dahlia's incantation succeeded and it became more than Alessa could bear. And so based on her perception that "It's like someone (myself?) is calling me...", Cheryl came to Silent Hill with Harry Mason.

Throughout the course of the first game, Harry Mason attempts to find his daughter Cheryl Mason, but keeps running into Alessa (who happens to look like Cheryl). Dahlia manipulates Harry to trap Alessa with saying that Alessa possesses the "Mark of Samael", the mark of a demon, and she is taking Cheryl as a sacrifice, she gives an object of great debate, the Flauros to Harry to use against Alessa. Alessa shows up near the end of the game as part of the final boss after merging with Cheryl. Once her soul is one again, the God is able to be born from Alessa. After Harry kills the God, a fading Alessa hands Harry a new-born baby: the reborn fused soul of herself and Cheryl .

Alessa and Cheryl's reincarnation reappears as the main heroine of Silent Hill 3 which takes place 17 years after the events of the first game.

She is also known as Alessa Gillespie, the daughter of Dahlia Gillespie, a member of the cult which controlled Silent Hill, and Dr. Michael Kauffmann, the director of medical staff at Alchemilla Hospital where Alessa's nurse, Lisa Garland, also worked. When Harry escaped Silent Hill, Alessa came back as an apparition and presented him with a newborn baby, which is both Cheryl, and Alessa herself, reborn. Harry, in an attempt to throw the cult off - should they come and look for both him and the child - renamed her Heather, and relocated to another city.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Walter Sullivan was born in 1970 in the town of Ashfield in Room 302 of the South Ashfield Heights apartment building. Just after his birth, his biological parents fled the apartment and left the newborn child behind, believing his birth to be unnatural. The infant was later discovered by the building superintendent, Frank Sunderland, who turned the child over to the nearby St. Jerome's Hospital. After a stay in the hospital, he became a ward of the state and was turned over to the Wish House orphanage in Silent Hill. It was there that he began his tutelage in the ways of The Order, the cult that operated the orphanage. In time, after learning of his tragic birth, the young Sullivan gradually started to believe that Room 302 itself was his mother, and the child started making weekly trips to Ashfield to visit "her," much to the dismay of the apartment's current residents. During his late adolescent years, he learned of the "21 Sacraments," an obscure ceremony in the Order's teachings that Walter could use to "awaken" his "mother." It was only a short while later during this time that he briefly encountered a young Eileen Galvin, who gave him one of her precious dolls in an act of pity, which he kept close to him ever since.

When Sullivan was about 21-22, he began his killing spree, murdering 10 people in as many days, removing their hearts and carving the numbers 01121-10121 into their bodies. He made no effort to cover his tracks, even going as far as to carve his own name into the flesh of his victims. He was captured and tried, but committed suicide by stabbing himself in the neck with a metal soup spoon and severing his own carotid artery while in prison. He was buried in an unmarked grave near the Wish House, but three days later, a man fitting his description was seen exiting Room 302 of the South Ashfield Heights apartment building.

Three years later, another body was found, killed in a very similar manner to Sullivan's previous victims and the police suspected a copycat, though the heart was not removed, nor was a name carved into the body. Police investigated Walter's grave and discovered there was no body found inside and that numbers, 11121, were carved into the coffin. Two more bodies surfaced over the next few years carved with the numbers 12121-14121. What the police failed to realize was that the numbers, 01121-14121, actually meant 01/21-14/21, meaning that Sullivan intended to kill 21 victims in all.

Through the Order's teachings, Sullivan believed that the deaths of these 21 victims would help free his "mother," Room 302, and wake her up again so that he could live within her "womb" once more, safe from the world that terrorized him. In the game, most of his victims appear as ghosts.

LOCATIONS

Paleville – Identified in 'Silent Hill 2' as being the northern half of the town, the counterpart to South Vale. Contains Old Silent Hill, Central Silent Hill, and the resort area.

Old Silent Hill – Primarily residential area, usually ignored by people on vacation.

*Cafe 5to2 - A small diner located on the North side of town. Harry wakes up here, and meets Cybil, in the beginning of the game.

*Midwich Elementary School - A school located on the south-west side of town. Both Lisa Garland and Alessa Gillespie were students there.

*Balkan Church – A legitimate church, possibly Protestant, in Old Silent Hill. Virtually ignored by members of The Order. Henry has a photograph of the church in his bedroom.

Central Silent Hill – Business district made primarily for the use of tourists.

*Silent Hill Police Station – The headquarters of the Silent Hill police force and their (ineffective) war on Order-related drug trafficking.

*Silent Hill Towne Center – A shopping mall located in the northwestern section of Central Silent Hill. Dahlia Gillespie’s antique store (and secret chapel) is next door to the mall.

*Alchemilla Hospital – A hospital located in Central Silent Hill. The hospital serves as a front for the production and distribution of White Claudia. Alessa was once a patient there.

*Nathan Drugs - The Local Drug Store seen in Silent Hill 1 and Silent Hill (film)

*Green Lion Antiques/"Other Church" - Dahlia's business/base of operations for The Order.

Silent Hill (resort area) – The tourist destination on the north side of Toluca Lake.

*The Lighthouse – The lighthouse on Toluca Lake, one of the town’s oldest structures.

*Lakeside Amusement Park – A theme park overlooking the lake.

*Norman Motel – A motel on the north shore of Toluca Lake.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

South Vale – The mainly residential, non-tourist destination town on the south side of Toluca Lake. Seems to be part of Silent Hill, and may just be another section, not another town. (Not confirmed) However, in Silent Hill 2, Angela states to James that from the graveyard, it's hard to miss Silent Hill because there is only one road into it from their location, which leads directly to the South Vale, indicating that it is, most likely, a region of Silent Hill.

*Observation Deck – A scenic overlook along County Road 73 adjacent to a wooded hiking path.

*Woodside Apartments – An apartment complex built just next to the Blue Creek Apartments.

*Blue Creek Apartments – A small apartment building. Angela's mother may have lived there.

*Rosewater Park – A park on the south shore of Toluca Lake. Contains a memorial to the people lost in the 1918 disappearance of the Little Baroness.

*Heaven’s Night – A gentleman’s club enjoying moderate fame in South Vale. It is hinted that Maria works here, and Silent Hill 3 references the 'return of Lady Maria' to the stage.

*Brookhaven Hospital – A mental institution in South Vale. Originally founded in the 1860s as a Civil War field hospital.

*Silent Hill Historical Society – A historical museum on the edge of South Vale.

*Toluca Prison – A now-defunct prison originally used to house Civil War POWs. Exact location is not stated in the games, however it appears to be located beneath the Historical Society building. Possibly the building was built over the site of the unused prison. Though this may just be caused by James' delusions, it is highly likely based on where James exits the Labyrinth that connects to it.

*Jack's Inn – A small motel located just South of Rosewater park. Douglas and Heather rest in a room here before they split up. James finds a save point on a car here, but nothing else.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toluca Lake – The lake, surrounded by forests, upon which the town of Silent Hill was founded.

*Wish House (A.K.A. Hope House) – A secluded, Order-run orphanage in the woods outside of Silent Hill.

*The Water Prison (A.K.A. Cylinder Prison, A.K.A. Panopticon) – A jail used by The Order to punish and brainwash the children living in the Wish House. While a stay there was used as a form of punishment, most of the children's stays were scheduled. Most likely situated within a mile or two of Wish House.
