Time is Running Out

Welcome to my very very basic quest thread! Hopefully things will get a little more interesting in here once I write more than simple profile info.

Cesium Standard Time

Atomic clocks measure time using the atomic resonance frequency of an ionized gas, usually cesium. The gas is bombarded with microwaves that cause it to oscillate. The vibrations of the gas' atoms are then used to measure time. Many atomic clocks make use of masers, which are concentrated microwave beams similar to lasers. Others draw in ambient microwaves.

The official international definition of the second is based upon atomic time. As such, atomic clocks stationed all over the globe are used to maintain a continuous and stable international timescale.

Atomic clocks are necessary for high-precision scientific research in many fields. The technology also has significant practical applications. For instance, atomic clocks are the basis for GPS navigation systems, and are used by broadcasting stations to produce carrier frequencies.

Time for an Incantation

Name: Isidor (named for Isidor Isaac Rabi, the physicist whose work on atomic resonance was responsible for the first atomic clocks)
Gender: Male
Spirit: Atomic Clock

Hair: Gunmetal grey, with a soft metallic sheen.
Eyes: The sort of bold red that wouldn't be out of place on a digital clock display. There is a bright white line in each iris that is constantly rotating, counting off the seconds in every minute. Isidor wears glasses because he thinks they make him look smarter.
Skin tone: Dark olive.
Physique: Skinny, angular, and fine-boned. A gunmetal watchband with a digital display circles his left wrist, and it doesn't seem to come off. Metallic patterns on his forearms are vaguely reminiscent of circuitry. Finally, Isidor has a long whip-like tail... that is actually an extension cord.
Clothing: Always crisp, neat, and modern. Geek chic at its finest. He might start wearing a lab coat when he gets older, if other, dorkier jackets don't capture his attention first. Isidor is meticulous about keeping his clothing clean and well-ironed. He likes anything with clean lines in classic colors, and isn't likely to be impressed by pastels or crazy patterns.

Likes: science, math, charts, dweebery, travel
Dislikes: the outdoors, fads, lateness, messes
Quirks: Organizes his clothes closet by fiber type, with a preference for synthetics. Has to plug his tail into a wall socket in order to get a really restful sleep. Named his plush turtle after Einstein. Secretly adores Dr. Who, in spite of constant bitching about the show's plot holes and scientific inaccuracy.
Favorite foods: Electricity, anything that's artifically sweetened, instant coffee.

Personality: Isidor is a fussy, prissy, spazzy dork. He strives to be precise in everything he does and nothing bothers him more than disorganization. Because of this, it's almost laughably easy to drive the spirit into hissy-fits of nerd rage. Isidor isn't shy, but he's a little socially maladjusted, and he doesn't often realize how much of a know-it-all he can be.

That said, the Spirit of the Atomic Clock isn't so bad of a guy. Isidor is responsible, hard-working perfectionist. Inflicting his a**l-retentive ways on others is his way of trying to be a good friend. He's curious to a fault and always willing to go on missions of discovery, provided that they conform to his little schedules.

Abilities: Always knows what time it is, down to subdivisions of nanoseconds. Can act as a human stopwatch. Never gets lost, because he has the ability to pinpoint his exact location on the globe by instinct.

Isidor may, when he matures, gain a minor ability to harness microwaves. This would basically give him a built-in long-range radar, the power to superheat water molecules, and the power to disrupt television, radio, and internet transmissions.

Past: Unlike several other Spirit children, Isidor has no real memories of a past life or any other prior form of existance. The Spirit of the Atomic Clock was born of the hopes and dreams that generations of physicists and engineers poured into their experiments. Naeli was able to bend and shape that energy into human form.

Timeless?

Guardian Name: Lucy Brize
Gender: Female
Occupation: Tourist, alleged journalist.

History: An amateur occultist who wandered into Gaia through an unfortunate accident with an Oujia board, Lu stays in Gaia for gawking purposes.

Likes: Sweets, cheerful people, things that are colorful, rituals where she gets to cut things, dragging Isidor around against his will.
Dislikes: Gloomy weather, things that are boring, feeling old.

I gotta say, this is definitely one of my favorite quests. XD I love the design of Isidor, especially the twist relating his eyes to a clock (durr because he's the atomic clock~), with the second hand around the irises. His personality tickles me pink, too. I'm conjuring up all sorts of wacky situations between him and Sophie and I can't stop giggling. BRILLIANT, I say! BRILLIANT~ heart whee

Wow, this idea looks really good so far. Inventive. I like! I had to read the Atomic Clock description twice, because it confused the hell out of me, but that just means I'm stupid XD Nothing really to critique, except that I want you to keep going!! wink heart Good luck!

Eee! Thanks so much. heart I know his description is still a bit sparse, so I'm glad that you like him.

Oh, gosh, he and Sophie would be trainwreck after hilarious trainwreck. Isidor would probably give himself an aneurism trying to "organize" her. Poor, misguided children!

I quite like Sophie, BTW. She reminds me of a mre subdued version of Deleruim from Neil Gaiman's Sandman, which I've always thought was a very interesting character.

Oh, goodness! I'll revamp that Atomic Clock description right away. Thank you for pointing that out. :3

I haven't posted in your quest thread, because I don't want to interrupt the RP that you seem to have going, but I think I like the volcano girl better than the storm boy. She has less info up, but just from the sketches you've posted of her, she seems to have a fun and clearly-defined personality. A crabby little girl with firepower to back it up sounds like she'd be interesting to write scenes with!

A-ha! See, that's who I'm sorta basing her off of, but--hopefully--loopier than Delerium herself. X3 It warms my heart to see another fan~ heart

Added to some basic guardian info, and clarified Isidor's abilities.

I'm a little conflicted on Issy's appearance. Circuit marks or no? Hm!

I have to say I love his personality... I mean, it's someone who would tick me off but that's always fun, no?

Keep the circuits, but maybe change the colour to gold or something? (is copper a little too weird?) I dunno, really. xd

I feel like copper or gold would lash with the dark grey hair? Maybe if I changed the grey hair to copper... copper circuitry would be pretty realistic. smile

I'm glad you like his personality, though! It might not be the most agreeable, but I felt like it could lead to some funny RP situations?
