I've heard that the actors have contracts for 7 years, but I'm not sure about that. But anyways, I'm expecting 7 total seasons (and I'm positive that there's no way for them to end the show with this season.)

Well if they do go to only 7 seasons they will definitely have to resolve one thing, who is Clark gonna end up with? Will they go with canon and have it be Lois, will he end up with the one his heart yearns for and have it be Lana, or will it be his best friend and have it be Chloe.
They also got to deal with Lex and what is gonna happen to him. Maybe more JL episodes. But who knows for all we know they will carry it on till the writing gets unbearable and it ends up getting canceled.
EDIT: I was just on Kryptonsite and followed a link to eonline that was for an interview with Michael Rosenbaum about his directorial debut on Smallville. Here is what caught my attention(possible spoiler within the interview):
It seems like the show has gotten a second wind in the last year or so, no? Yes, people say that. There was one year when I thought, This is it, we are going to end the show. And then, all of a sudden, last season just took off and I don’t know what happened, but the story became really interesting and they amped everything up. I think we are getting some of the best ratings ever this year, and it’s amazing.
Do you feel like one more season is a sure thing? I think next season will definitely happen. I think we are pretty much the favorite on the CW. Well, one of the favorites—I don’t want to piss anyone off.
So, are you in it for the long haul? Next year will be my last year. I had a great run. I loved it, but that will be it for me.
Really? Is that how the whole cast is feeling? No, I think other people have longer contracts. I’m not going to say who, but I know that next year is the last for me. So, it will be very sad when it happens, but all good things must come to an end.
So I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that if Michael is done after next season that Lex will die and there will be more than 7 seasons.

But yeah, 7 years.

Season 7 will be the last season with Lex in it. For all we know Tom signed on for more than 7 in which case we will have more than 7 seasons.

neutral I'd say even though they signed on for more than 7 seasons they'll be lucky to see season 7. The show is awesome and they had a few great episodes this season, but Smallville has lost a lot of steam since season 5 emo

Latley the show has been getting a 3.8 which is good for the network...It had an average in the 3 point range for season 5 too.

I think I look forward to seeing how SMALLVILLE ends when it does though. Because I want to see the ending of it so badly.
